Detectives have now asked the Home Office for money to continue their investigation when the taxpayer money runs out in a month’s time. Madeleine was only 3 years old when she disappeared while on holiday with her family in the Algarve region of Portugal.
So far the investigation has cost £12m with an extra £300k granted to the team last year after Police commissioner Cressida Dick confirmed it was still an active line of inquiry.
Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “It is good news that the Met Police are seeking a new budget to continue the search for Madeleine.
"Kate and Gerry are greatly encouraged that officers still believe there is active work left to be done and do hope that the Home Office grants their request.

“Whilst an active investigation is ongoing it gives them hope that one day they will find out what happened to Madeleine after all these years.
"The Met has an iron will determination to find the answers Kate and Gerry so desperately want.”

Scotland Yard opened its Operation Grange, in 2011. The senior investigating officer announced that he was treating the disappearance as "a criminal act by a stranger", most likely a planned abduction or burglary gone wrong.
