MADDIE COP TOP JOB

Police chief who made Madeleine McCann’s parents suspects now heads Portugal’s crime squad

Kate McCann, 50, once called him 'humanitarian and sensitive' — but he was a driving force in making her and Gerry suspects

A POLICE chief involved in making Madeleine McCann’s parents suspects after her disappearance has been named the new head of Portugal’s serious crime squad.

Fingers crossed. This whole operation is about control of what gets out. One would hope for some independent thinking from the Portuguese to follow their own insticts and give the middle finger to the british establishment...

The Sun strikes again.   Why not shut up about it. Who else would ever have known?

In a far off country of which we know nothing, a senior officer has been promoted.

Hopefully he'll be dealing with our letter while he's at it.

With his knowledge of the McCann case, how much influence would he have over the re-opening of the investigation?

According to Kate McCann in her autobiographical novel 'madeleine', they first met Luis Neves on 24th May 2007 - that would be but hours after Gerry McCann's lightening trip back to the UK to collect the last photograph, a pillow case, a government media monitoring unit director and whatever else deemed important.

Indeed there are no fewer than 25 mentions of Luis Neves and his colleague, starting 24th May right up to the McCanns swift departure from Portugal, early September 2007 - this coming from the couple who said they weren't kept informed by the PJ.

An example to illustrate the Anglo/Portuguese liaison..

The officers we met on that occasion, and would continue to meet regularly, were the two men ultimately in charge of the investigation. Guilhermino Encarnação, chief of the Algarve PJ, based in Faro, we had encountered at the police station in Portimão on the day after Madeleine’s abduction. The other was Luís Neves, head of the DCCB (Direcção Central de Combate ao Banditismo) in Lisbon. The DCCB, the equivalent of the Serious Organised Crime Agency, dealt with gang crime. Neither man spoke English
..........

Luís Neves was a totally different character. He was our age and had a son who was the same age or maybe just a little older than Madeleine. He seemed intelligent, personable and strong, open to suggestions and new ideas. My initial impressions of him were all positive. I wrote in my diary that night:

A good fella; on the ball; humanitarian, sensitive.

We felt relaxed with Neves and he and Gerry seemed to get on well. He was quite tactile and would greet us warmly, often patting Gerry on the back or giving him a brotherly hug or a little punch on the arm. As Gerry churned out suggestions and strategies, he would joke about how my husband would make a great detective.
..........

Evidently there was a leak within the Polícia Judiciária. We brought up this matter at our next meeting with Neves and Encarnação on 5 July. They agreed that, yes, there must be a leak from the PJ, but in spite of the endlessly cited judicial secrecy law, no internal inquiry was ever launched.
..........

The other person we got to see that morning was Luís Neves, looking slightly dishevelled and a bit older (we all did, I’m sure). I’d badly wanted to look this man in the eye, too, [the other was Gonçalo Amaral] since the day I was made arguida. The last time we’d spoken he’d accused me of refusing to do so. Today the tables were turned. However hard I fixed my gaze on him, he would not look at me. We had liked and trusted him, but it felt as if he’d turned his back on us. I’d believed he was stronger than that. I’d thought he was one of the good guys. I was disappointed in him and disappointed in myself, too, for putting my faith in him.
.........

A re-enactment.

Neves:  Vot tis dis voman say to me

Pro-Consul:  She said you're an effing tosser

Neves:  Tch tch tch tch, vou sourcy minx, vou knows me vell ....... I err toss err the mean err , how vou say in yore ingleesh, err ... effing err amberg'er

Police chief with McCann case history new top cop in Portugal

By Mark Saunokonoko
3:36pm May 16, 2018

A senior detective who investigated the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been named Portugal's new chief of police.

Luis Neves, who previously headed up Portugal's counter-terrorism unit, will become the director of the Policia Judiciaria in June.

In the days after Maddie vanished, Neves assisted the massive police search for Madeleine because of his counter-terror background and experience in hostage taking and abduction situations.

When three-year-old Madeleine disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on Portugal's Algarve on May 3, 2007, abduction was the first police line of inquiry.

However, as the investigation deepened, detectives also explored other possibilities - including declaring Maddie's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, formal suspects.

The McCanns have always denied playing any part in the disappearance of Madeleine, who was just days away from her fourth birthday. Both had their status of formal suspect lifted when the 14-month case was shelved in 2008, with police citing a lack of evidence to move the investigation forward. The McCanns have maintained from the outset that Madeleine was abducted.

Neves is known to be friends with Goncalo Amaral, the Portuguese detective who led the McCann investigation before he was abruptly removed from the case in October, 2007.

In 2008, Amaral wrote an explosive book about the Madeleine case.

The release of the book, a best-seller in Portugal, triggered a bitter legal battle with the McCanns. Kate and Gerry tried to sue Amaral for £1 million and have the book banned. Initially they succeeded, but Amaral appealed that decision in Portugal and won.

Giving testimony during the 2013 libel trial, Neves confirmed he and Amaral were friends as well as colleagues.

Last year, in what is a final throw of the dice, the McCanns lodged an appeal at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), trying to overturn the 2017 decision by Portugal's Supreme Court.

Nine.com.au can confirm the McCanns filed their case with the ECHR on July 28, 2017.
Their claim is still being processed by the court.

If alive, Madeleine would have turned 15 on May 13 this week.

A very evasive lukewarm report from someone who claims to be so pro-Madeleine McCann, in my view.  Another one in fear of losing his job or just another story using the 'Maddie' epithet to sell copy?

Like Rupert Murdoch, this case seems to have tentacles everywhere - why Australia?  Clarence Mitchell seems to be quite big down under.  Titter ye not - I refer to the Antipodes, not his trouser arrangement.

Libel trial McCann v Gonçalo Amaral - Day 7 Witness No 3

The testimony as it happened...
(08.10.2013, 12:01pm) Luis Neves, former Coordinator of the DCCB (Direcção Central de Combate ao Banditismo), now directs the UNCT (Unidade Nacional de Combate ao Terrorismo), the PJ unit that fights violent criminality.
The Judge asks the witness if he intervened in the criminal process related to Madeleine McCann's disappearance.
LN says he did, but not directly. He explains that, after some days, the then National Director of the PJ, Alipio Ribeiro, asked him to send officers of his unit who were specialised in cases of abduction and hostage. He adds that his team had collaborated in the Joana Cipriano murder case.

  • * *

LN says he only remembers clearly one or two chapters, about dogs and about an Irish family. He says that anybody who at the time was aware of this case knew all that was in this book. He explains that the Public Ministry had the files digitalised in order to make them available.
SO – Have you any knowledge about how the "death" theory came about?

LN says there was no such theory in the beginning; he even remembers that Guilhermino Encarnação talked of abduction. But with time this idea had to be contemplated. He says that Madeleine's parents were the first to talk of death. It occurred in the British Consulate when the parents wanted a South African ex-policeman to come with a machine supposed to find bodies from hair samples (Note: Matter Orientation System or MOS).
He remembers there were a lot of problems at the customs because of this device. The witness says that later, the British police officers who were collaborating in Portimão started speaking of special dogs that could discover bodies in a field. He says that it is where the initiative of sending for the dogs originated. Through the help of the dogs the investigation evolved. Death appeared a serious possibility. It led to the examination of telecommunications. From the end of 2007 on, the "death" theory became a distinct possibility.
SO – Was the investigation limited to the facts that are in the book?
LN Independently of the main theory, all lines of inquiry kept on being investigated. The witness adds that the dogs (Eddie and Keela) resolved many cases, they arrived with an impressive curriculum vitae and a lot of certificates that of course carried a certain amount of prestige.

  • * *

d) TVI's lawyer, Dr. Miguel Coroadinha.
TVI – What about the South African called Krügel, who suggested he be sent for?
LN The parents did, particularly the mother, she made much pressure for it to happen.
TVI – Was the machine intended to find bodies or living people?
LN Bodies. It wasn't supposed to reveal the location of living people.
TVI – Then the parents considered death...
The Judge overrules.

  • * *

LN says he wasn't present during the Krügel diligence, but he was told how it occurred. He describes the methodology.
Then the witness mentions that some sticks were inserted into the ground in order to help the dogs find an eventually buried corpse.
TVI – Was that theory promoted among all others?
LN says he didn't say so and observes that Guilhermino Encarnação spoke of abduction in spite of having absolutely nothing that could substantiate it. He insists that, as in the Joana Cipriano case previously investigated, all hypotheses must always be on the table.

  • * *

2) The McCann’s substitute lawyer, Dr Ricardo Afonso.
RA – You spoke of a suggestion to send for dogs, is it in the process?
LN says he doesn't know if there is a Report on that. He knows that the proposal by the British police wasn't easy to accept because it involved high costs and there was no precedent in Portugal to work with this type of specialised dog. He remembers that, just after the operations with the dogs, he spoke to two British officials in Lisbon to whom he asked what use the English Courts made of the dogs' alerts.
RA – Then?
LN I was told they only perform a secondary part, but in many different cases they had helped to reach the truth.

And then nothing more was said.

Fascinating, I didn't know the McCann's pushed for the weird body finding machine before the dogs were thought of, and then dogs written off "unreliable"...
