Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
Earlier this year Scotland Yard said detectives were still following a critical lead 10 years after Madeleine disappeared.
By Martin Brunt, Crime Correspondent
Scotland Yard is to ask for more money to continue its six-year investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Detectives are struggling to resolve a final lead, which, if it fizzled out, could have brought the £11m Government-funded investigation to an end next month.
I understand that the Home Office is willing to carry on paying for the last bit of work to be completed.
A source said: "We will be asking for more money because we need to complete the work we are doing. It is complicated and not as straightforward as we had hoped, but it is worth doing."
Madeleine was nearly four years old when she vanished without trace from her family's rented holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.
The Portuguese police closed their investigation 15 months later, after finding nothing to explain her disappearance.
In 2011, after an appeal from her parents Kate and Gerry McCann, the then Prime Minister David Cameron asked Scotland Yard to investigate with special Home Office funding.
Sixteen months ago then Scotland Yard Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said his squad - reduced in 2015 from 30 to three staff - was expecting to close a final investigative lead within months.
In April this year, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said detectives were still following a critical lead.
"We have a significant line of inquiry which is worth pursuing and because it's worth pursuing it could provide an answer - but until we've gone through it I won't know whether we are going to get there or not."
Police will give no details of the lead - nor why it is proving so difficult to resolve. But they want more time to pursue it.
There has been speculation that it involves a hunt for a suspect or a key witness, but none of that has been confirmed.
"That line of inquiry probably at the moment is the conclusion of this inquiry," he said.
Retired Metropolitan Police detective Peter Kirkham said: "Media interest and the political drive for it to be done in the first place will add to a reluctance to stop the investigation until they are absolutely sure they have done everything they can.
"If a line of inquiry has any signs of life in it whatsoever, they will be saying 'this is here and we can do it but we'll need this amount to do it and if you don't wish to pay for it that is your decision'."
A spokesman for Madeleine's family told Sky News: "The McCanns will be pleased. The fact that the police feel there is still work to be done which needs funding is very encouraging.
"They remain grateful to all the officers involved in the investigation."
Scotland Yard said: "Funding is in place until the end of September. Any details about future funding will be released when appropriate."
The Home Office confirmed that funding for Operation Grange had been provided until the end of next month.
"The level of funding provided is a reflection of the wide-ranging and complex nature of the investigation which the police have deemed necessary to undertake," a spokesperson said.
They added that they have not received a new funding request from Scotland Yard but that "any future request will be considered carefully".

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
The Sky News link I posted earlier today on the Media Mayhem thread that included a video clip of the anonymous 'troll dossier' spokeswoman, has since been changed - it is now a full feature on the subject, including footage of Brunt meeting with Brenda Leyland at her home. Someone must be watching CMoMM .
At the end of the original video, there was a 35 minute coverage of a House of Commons debate between the PM Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn before the summer recess. The primary argument was of course the economy and it's ongoing effect on public services. . I'm not overly interested in politics because I think it a load of old bunkum, least of all Corbyn's socialist unrealistic ideology but this debate caught my attention.
Whilst talking of low pay in nursing and other lower echalons of the NHS, Corbyn naturally enough spoke robustly about the unfairness of the great UK wage divide (for once I agreed with him, probably more an intense dislike of anything Theresa 'Thatcher' May than a love of Corbyn). May jocosely waffled her way through the debate without providing any valid justification for the national social divide that effects just about every corner of society.
So, whilst these dedicated under payed workers are slaving away daily to save lives in our hospitals and on the streets, clearing up the mess of mass destruction - what of Operation Grange? How can Theresa May, or her successor at the Home Office, possibly justify continuation of a farcical waste of public money in the name of Operation Grange?
They haven't got any leads to follow, any fool can see that if only they open their eyes. They had a remit to follow the lines of an abduction as if it happened in the UK - that remit has never been updated; the initial inquiry was up-scaled to a full blown investigation, stripping back to the beginning, leaving no stone un-turned but how exactly has Operation Grange progressed? You guessed it - it hasn't.
Question remains unanswered is why.
Wake up Britain - this is the ultimate delusion!

Heard this story on the radio late last night. Had the usual one last lead blah blah blah.
But it did say, ref the funding. The Gov would pay up, because 'public interest' in the case is still very high.

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
This just about covers the state of everyone who walks the earth, We are working on the basis of two possibilities here. One is that Madeleine is still alive; and the second that she is sadly dead."
There's a certain ability which these "top cops" share, and that is to stitch up an innocent party (patsy) to protect a guilty party. The list is so long now it's beyond a joke, from Stefan Kiszko in the mid 1970's, to Barry George, and on and on and on to Dino Barkas.
If they could find a patsy in Portugal, they'd have "solved" this case and reveled in the glory.

There's a great comment on the Mail article about the funding, someone has written 'How much funding do you need for a ride to Rothley?'

Now people spare a thought or Two for the missing child's parents,Kate and Gerry McCann,as Mark Rowley Assistant commander of the Metropolitan Police Service has already done in this"unique case"alongside a broad church of Police Officials from Leicestershire to Sir Bernard Hogan Howe, big Jim Gamble who are prominently dispatched, dispersed to deal with the"Innocence" of Kate Gerry McCann, should it be necessary, alongside the fragrant Clarence(bovine Spirit)?Kathian1997 wrote:There's a great comment on the Mail article about the funding, someone has written 'How much funding do you need for a ride to Rothley?'

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
Is this another final lead, or the final lead that went nowhere last time they needed money or the final lead they were chasing before the were given £85,000?
Blimey it is like being asked for the final score on a football game and being told you will only get it when the result they want is available.
Imagine putting a bet on a horse that won ever race but your bet was only valid when the bookie said the race counted.

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
I was in a public place today when this news came on a tv, a discussion broke out and I was simply stunned to hear that all the people discussing it seemed to take it as read that MM was abducted. I interjected to point out that there was actually not a shred of hard evidence that an abduction took place. The conversation went rather quiet and I slipped away.I was left with the impression that after my departure I was probably referred too in a negative way. The public have been duped on this story in a gigantic way.
My own hunch has almost leaned towards feeling that the whole thing is a gigantic hoax. Its just about the only thing that makes sense. (IMO).

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
You have to wonder why the UK media, through a source close to the investigation, find it necessary to report every time renewed funding is allocated to Operation Grange, through the medium of the Home Office.
Why?
Wouldn't it be more sensible to just continue the investigation without blowing horns about how much, why, when and where? It's not normal for the UK police to publicize the running cost of a criminal investigation (if truth be known, that's probably nigh on impossible with any degree of accuracy), so why do they in this particular case?
It can't be because of public concern - the subject would never have arisen if the Home Office/Metropolitan Police/UK media hadn't published the information in the first place. Why are they doing this? The logical course of action would be to reassure the McCann family and the public at large that the investigation remains active until all leads have been exhausted and even then only shelved pending further evidence and/or intelligence - routine policing.
Why are the establishment going out of their way to attract criticism, to foster animosity? Surely not to encourage 'trolling'? Nah?
One for sure - everything but everything connected in any way to this case and the establishment is done for a shrouded reason. I don't think this is an exception.

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
Some people will think the funding should stop because £11 million or whatever the true figure is, is enough. Some people will think the parents were at fault for leaving 3 kids alone and bear a responsibility for neglect. Other people think the money should be spent finding other children.
All these points which people argue over, and get frustrated about are pointless. They deflect attention away from what is a more likely event, that Madeleine died sometime during that holiday.
The questions which should be asked are.
Why have the government restricted the scope of the investigation to only look at an abduction.
Why have police gone along with the remit handed to them, and spent millions of public money on a wild goose chase.

In comparison, the government allocated £5million to share amongst all the survivors of Grenfell Tower who lost their families and all their belongings.
£5million.
£5million.

In April my partner had his foot run over by a hit and run driver, all bones in his foot broken plus a crush injury :-( the police who attended were lovely, we gave them as much info as we could about the car, black BMW partial number plate, they were helpful, took statements said they would check CCTV to see if they could get evidence and helped him into the ambulance. We have since heard they spoke to someone who denies hitting my partner, CCTV was not good enough case closed as there is not enough money to take it further errr we have some evidence and I am sure it would not cost millions to follow up. Thousands of people face this scenario where is the money to investigate these cases?

Maybe every now and again they feel the need for a news item, to squeeze more life out of the hoax ? ( if thats what it is). A scenario where a private detective followed the M'S and associated people going about their daily lives wouldve been interesting ?
Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
As far as I remember, there has still not been any unequivocal statement from the 'detectives' [or as my neighbour says 'defectives']that the McCanns have been cleared of any involvement in their daughter's disappearance.
We have the PJ investigation and it's findings, which I believe still stands, that is damning for the McCanns and 'friends'.Although the McCanns do not seem to have been investigated under Operation Grange,no-one has been bold enough to go on record to say that they are innocent. It is little wonder that most of the public seem to be hostile towards the McCanns. Our police have been made to look foolish and the parents have dodged a bullet.

Just wondering
Just wondering: isn't it the case that, for the duration of the UK 'investigation' the PJ records on the cooperation efforts of the PJ and the UK police forces remain inaccessible to the general public, and that they will (have to) be made public in the same manner the original PJ files were made public years ago?
In that case, a steady stream of 'one-off' supplementary payments would safeguard a lot of people involved in the ongoing wild goose chase.
Shouldn't we be asking: which people?
And: till when, for how long, must they remain protected?

I think so people will get fed up with it. It's a classic tactic. Drag any enquiry out for years and purposefully make a mess of it. also squander money on it. Many people will simply get bored because they have new 'celebrity dancing X factor Cake baking brother' to watch and the rest of them will be angry about money spent on the farce of the investigation and demand it ends. Problem, Reaction, Solution!

Not another last roll of the dice PLEASE. I did read that even some of the tv "loose women" think that enough has been spent on this one case.
I agree.

Ministers are likely to approve more funding as long as they are satisfied there is a realistic chance of discovering her fate.
The Scotland Yard search for Madeleine McCann is set to be extended, three weeks before its funding was due to run out.
Detectives have asked the Home Office for more money while they continue to explore one last theory about her disappearance.
Ministers are likely to approve a cash injection so long as they are satisfied there is still a realistic chance of discovering the fate of Madeleine, who was nearly four when she vanished during a family holiday in Portugal in 2007.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police and their Portuguese colleagues have worked together for more than a year to find clues to corroborate their theory.
Sky News understands that phase of their investigation is complete and their success will hinge on technical results of their work.
The money they are asking for is unlikely to be a large amount, effectively enough to keep a small number of detectives - three or four - on little more than a watching brief. [What are they watching ?]
The request should be approved in the next week or so.
* * *
She had been left sleeping in a room with her younger brother and sister while her parents Kate and Gerry McCann dined nearby with friends.
The couple said they made regular checks on their three children and discovered Madeleine was missing around 10pm, insisting she had been abducted.
* * *
Early ideas about sex predators, child traffickers and "a burglary gone wrong" were largely dismissed before both detective teams joined forces to focus on the latest theory.
Hmmmmm ! We are discussing her FATE. So no Paedos, no childless couple, and no random "other" excuse.
And we are using words like "Said", and "insisting".
And this is "100% DNA match, hound Brenda to her death" Brunt

Is this happening because the Government are about to set up a full blown investigation into Murdochs' mucky media empire? Apparently, according to the 38 Degrees,
Murdoch's been trying to spread his fake news, bias and hate-filled stories across the UK for years.
Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
So what are they watching ?
The Portuguese appeal court and Supreme court are over
ECHR is years away and in any event has nothing to do with anything except their reputation.
What are they watching
And why does it take 4 of them to do it.
And meanwhile THEY ARE NOT SEARCHING FOR MADELEINE
Not in Hlelish lairs, and no longer in shallow graves in PdL.

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
If early ideas about sex predators, child traffickers and bungling burglars were largely dismissed, then who have they been looking for all this time?
Oh yeah sorry... Nobody.

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
What I would like to know is, where has this money really been spent?
This is the UK top police force, surely the officers are not so incompetent as to dismiss the evidence of the dogs and ignore the official line of inquiry? Furthermore, are they not aware that the supreme courts still hold that the McCanns have not been cleared of suspicion?
Surely these officers realise that there was no abduction, and they are not permitted to follow any other line of inquiry. If this is so, why would they be investigating an abduction? Why would they do any work at all when they know the result before they even start? What do they hope to achieve?
Unless these officers are completely incompetent and don't realise that they are on a wild goose chase, they are not really going to waste time seeking an abductor that they know too well, just doesn't exist.
So what are they doing? and how is this money really being spent?

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
We believe that the police ask for money and the government hand it over, but is there proof of this happening?
My guess is that it's just part of the play, because if they're not looking for anyone, then how can it cost stupid amounts of money?

Re: Hunt for Madeleine McCann needs more cash to continue
I hope one day they will be made accountable for all these millions spent in looking for one child.
Unless, by some miracle, they are looking in areas we know nothing about and once outed, we will all know where the money went at that point. Do I believe that? No!
