Crackdown on 'corrosive' online hate crimes launched by Crown Prosecution Service
Just what we need. More prosecutions for dumb things people say online. Never mind the rapists and abusers that get given a slap on the wrist and go on to ruin multiple lives, the dwindling resources of the police are going to be concentrating on the intarwebs.
I wonder who else will be using these tighter rules on 'trolls' to shut down discussion?

''Changes 'will remind the trolling brigade that there are real consequences for hitting the button' and will 'undoubtedly lead to an increase in prosecutions'
Hate crimes committed on social media will be treated as seriously as similar street-based offences, according to new guidelines issued by the Crown Prosecution Service as they launch a crackdown on hate speech online.
Recognising the “corrosive effect” of hate crime on British society, Alison Saunders, the director of public prosecutions, announced the CPS will now revise prosecutions of such crimes “with the same robust and proactive approach used with offline offending”.
The changes could lead to a dramatic increase in those being prosecuted for posting prejudice attacks on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
Jenny Wiltshire, the head of general crime at Hickman and Rose solicitors, told The Independent the change in policy from the CPS reflects “the fact that the internet has become a breeding ground for misogynist, racist and homophobic views”.
She continued: “The decision to treat offences committed online no differently from offline offences will undoubtedly lead to an increase in prosecutions. It will also remind the trolling brigade that there are real consequences for hitting the button”.

Alison Saunders wasn't exactly what you would call 'robust' and 'proactive' when it came to 'Lord' Janner, was she?

Re: Crackdown on 'corrosive' online hate crimes launched by Crown Prosecution Service
Just a quick question, when did it actually become an offence to "hate" something? Surely that is a blow to freedom. Of both expression and human rights.
When did this nonsense start?
It is as dumb as the "war on terror" . I hate all sorts of things, mostly injustice and those who get away with it. And those who COVER UP the crimes of others. I hate crimes of all kinds but mostly those against the helpless. I hate the right and left wings equally. The list go's on and on. Am I even allowed to exist anymore?

It shouldn't be a crime should it? I am totally on board with people being prosecuted for making threats but expressing your hatred or dislike of someone? It's just another way to curb free speech.

Pat Brown wrote a really good article the other day:

I would imagine this new crackdown is for them. So that they've got the law on their side next time they try hounding someone to death. Not that a new law is needed because it didn't affect them anyway, just as concealing a corpse, perverting the course of justice and obtaining monies by deception didn't affect them.
But, oh no, if I take to twitter to say "I hate Isl** when they drive their rented vans into us while we're on the pavement" then I'm going to find myself in the slammer?
Perhaps Great Britain should be renamed Great McCann or United McCann.
Silly I know, but it does rather seem like they've taken over the world and everything now is for their benefit.
It won't be long before Professor Gerald McCann or Ambassador Kate McCann becomes Prime Minister.

Someone is talking on 5 live radio now, apparently this guy is convinced it has to be 'sustained' and cause serious effect to be considered a crime. It can't just be saying you dislike someone online according to him.
There's a big focus on 'trans' hate and homophobia in all the rhetoric around this, I don't believe that's the focus at all.

I hate the term 'trolling' I refuse to use it as it's emotive and silly.
If someone is making threats on your life or saying that they will assault you, that's a crime.
Is some one is argumentative, nasty or an arse online. That's what they are. No need for a special term.

The word is grossly inappropriately overused - latest buzz word for anyone who takes a dislike to you or disagrees with what you say.
It's shameful that the establishment are taking it on board as such a serious issue that they consider calls for intervention by the law.

It's all just pathetic really. There's laws now about death threats but the police are very selective on whether they're enforced. Well they're only enforced if you belong on the Gov's approved list. If you're not. you can be threatened with stabbing, rape, death and nothing is done.
Same thing will happen with this BS. But this time the person on the approved list has protection of the thought & opinion police. So in theory, you could say you think Eddie Izzard looks like a camp Frank Spenser. And he could cry hate.
Sticks & stones my break my bones
But words will make my head fall off.

Hogwash, Islam is an ideology, but it is quite acceptable to voice your hate for Muslims if you feel some of them are a risk to you going about your daily life based on your perceptions.
This is one of the elephants in the room for the tin-foil hat PC brigade.
Say it like it is and be damned

I got bored waiting..........but at last here are the Mc's using the new guidelines to warn off 'trolls' who dare to ask questions. There is a nice little extract from the 'troll' study by John Synott telling us how the McCanns get 150 'vile' tweets / messages per day. ( Most about how they are responsible) ....does that count as abuse......really???
"Maddie's parents urge vile trolls to stop 'awful and upsetting abuse' on their own website as they back new rules BANNING criticism of decision to leave her alone in apartment
............."Among rules on their campaign page are: 'Do not use obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy or excessively violent language.
'Do not harass, insult, taunt, provoke, demean or personally attack other people on the page. Be friendly even if others are not.
'Do not ask questions about the investigation.'

Some of the DM comments. Most of them are like this. Re. The last one, how handy would it be to just wrap the case up and say it's unsolvable after even the UK's finest police spent years on it? Very handy for some.
"Is it 'trolling' when they're only criticising leaving a 3 year old to baby sit two twins? I don't think so."
"More transparency, please, about how much of the public money donated and spent on this case goes on the McCann's PR and legal costs."
"We are scared to debate, discuss and voice our opinion on line least we will be called trolls..one mistaken word or mis interpretation of your opinion.. you will done.. where is the freedom of speech there ?''
"After so many years and so much money, surely it is time to say the cops don't know? If I was still a UK taxpayer, I'd be saying enough is enough.''

Oh, and it does even more to protect the "big secret" about why Madeleine must NEVER be found.

Followers of this case still get buoyed up (to coin a phrase), not you Chippy M, everytime a tabloid dares to publish comments about the mcCanns from the public but what does it amount to - without exception..
a) Neglect
b) The cost of Operation Grange
c) Trolling
Neglect = abduction. No neglect = no abduction.
The cost of Operation Grange alone is not the issue. The important factor is what Operation Grange have or haven't been doing for the past 6+ years, whilst all these millions are being thrown their way.
There is no such thing as trolling. It's a word from folklore, now grossly over/misused to generally categorize a critic - it has no substance, it amounts to nothing.
So what is the true reason the tabloids allow a carefully censored/moderated selection of comments to be published in their daily rags from time to time - apart from the obvious need to protect their standing in the world of journalism? Could it be a diversion, a distraction from the bigger picture - Madeleine?
Whatever, one things for sure - nothing positive is ever achieved.

The only guilty party that systematically incites hate crime is the UK media. It is nothing but a massive propaganda machine, effectively directing public opinion - why can't people see they are being duped.
It makes me sick.

I watched BBC news a couple of weeks ago, and the last item was about Donald Trump.
Something along the lines of, Donald Trump is going on summer holiday playing golf. Vladimir Putin however, is doing something completely different, he's going fishing!
Then on ITV news, Donald Trump is going on summer holiday playing golf. Vladimir Putin however, is doing something different, he's going fishing!
Then on local radio, Donald Trump is going on summer holiday, he's off playing a few rounds of golf. Vladimir Putin however, is doing something totally different, he's going fishing!
So do they get their stories from a single source, or is it just simple co-incidence that they all run this story with very similar words?
We're all in it together!

It has been getting worse and worse in recent years.
Ever since the "sexed up documents" incident.
Thus we have a media monitoring unit.

Exactly, and as it seems that all news outlets are anti-Trump, I took it to mean that Putin was doing very manly topless fish wrestling while Trump was thrashing about in long grass looking for some balls.
I agree to a point with Bluebag, but I think it's more than lazyness, or cheap news, it's deeper than that. It's a drip feed of the same opinions which brainwash listeners/viewers into buying into the propaganda.
The McCanns being a prime example of every news outlet singing to their tune, the holiday plans of two leaders aren't usually compared, so why do it now. It's complete trivia, but it helps to put Trump down, I wish our leader was doing naked shark wrestling but instead he's a golf wimp.
