“It was perfectly clear to us that the McCanns themselves had nothing at all to do with the actual disappearance. It was just obvious from everything stacked up that they were where they were when the child went missing.”

By this time our friend Jon Corner, a creative director in media production in Liverpool, was circulating photographs and video footage of Madeleine to the police, Interpol and broadcasting and newspaper news desks. This was in accordance with the standard advice of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in the US, which advocates getting an image of a missing child into the public domain as soon as possible.

"Kate and Gerry are realistic enough to know that Madeleine may be dead and it would be a tragedy that she is found as such, because it rules out the hope that she is alive... But any widening of the search area is encouraging and we would welcome that. If she is dead then she is dead, but not by their hand."

Pedro Frias, the judge who has now released a murderer, is the same one who decided to arrest a man over the theft of a mobile phone and to free another one who shot a firearm inside the police station in Portimão. Among so many other cases where Pedro Frias adopted uncommon decisions, there is also the Maddie case, in which he prevented the Polícia Judiciária from accessing and using the McCann couple’s phone taps and text messages.

She has glossy hair, held back from her face in an Alice band and her dress has a traditional Peter Pan collar. Her eyes look warm and happy. She is smiling. It would be easy to imagine, if the shot were full length, a bicycle resting against a picket fence beside her, or a small pony in a field waiting to be saddled.
The newly-published age progression image of Madeleine McCann shows a well cared for, happy child.

Gerry's long-term agenda:
“We want a big event to raise awareness that she is still missing. It wouldn’t be a one-year anniversary, it will be sooner than that”
-----
"I have no doubt we will be able to sustain a high profile for Madeleines disappearance in the long term."
-----
"On Tuesday evening, we took part in the Rothley & Soar Valley Lions 10K road race here in the village. Twenty of us (family and friends) wore our Madeleine t-shirts and that together with cheers of encouragement from spectators, made it all worthwhile. It was a really enjoyable evening and a fantastically well-supported event.
We’re already talking about next years run! Hopefully we wont be needing to wear our t-shirts for that one."

Gerry McCann and the long-term agenda
'On the flight to Berlin, Gerry wearily admitted the couple's campaign to find Madeleine could last years.
They refuse to leave Praia da Luz while their precious daughter is still missing.
Asked how long they might stay there, he said: "Well, our kids don't start school for three years.'

Matt Baggott: When stepping down in Leicestershire he admitted that one of his big regrets was the continued failure to locate Madeleine McCann, the young girl who disappeared in Portugal in May 2007.
Maybe Mr Baggott also regrets these?
1) Sent a family liasion officer to PDL
2) Brought in numerous other Forces to assist
3) Provided a Police escort from the Airport to Rothley for the Prime Suspects
4) Assisted in collecting a pillow from Rothley & Delivered it to the FSS
5) Assisted in getting M Harrison to Portugal & then ignored his report
6) Provided a Link from the Leics Police website to the Prime Suspects Find Madeleine website
7) Travelled to Portugal to prevent 'certain information' from reaching the Public
8 ) Witheld for 6 months witness statements incriminating one of the T7
9) Communicated with the T9 in a highly casual, friendly & wholly unprofessional manner
10) Went to the High Court & allowed TM to get their hands on 141 (or thereabouts) pieces of information
11) Continued to support the Private Company of the prime suspects by advertising a link to the web-site
12) Advised the T9 that they saw no value in them returning to PDL for the reconstruction
13 ) Allowed the tapas group to read their previous statements, and each other's depositions, allowed the tapas to change and edit the answers, led the answers, boycotted the recordings of the said statements
14) Leaked documents to journalists and to the McCann Team.
I doubt he wonders, or regrets, why the Police have failed to locate three-year-old Madeleine McCann.
Job done. For some reason...

Greedy b*st*rds didn't sue Mr Amaral as soon as the book was released, but waited a year until it had sold many copies. That's how distraught the McParents were.

I was taken into a large room containing several desks. Gerry had asked João Carlos if he could be allowed to stay with me while I was questioned because he was extremely worried about my psychological state. I was grateful to João Carlos for agreeing, with the proviso that Gerry remained seated behind me. I appreciate now that this would not be acceptable practice in most police investigations.
Every now and then Gerry would put a hand on my shoulder or give me a reassuring squeeze.

Re: 'QUOTE OF THE DAY'
It may sound odd, but in some ways we were glad the investigation had been closed.
As I’ve said, we were far from convinced that there was any real investigation taking place anyway, so to have it officially brought to an end didn’t feel like as big a loss as might have been expected.
While the PJ had continued to supply the usual response – ‘The official investigation continues. All credible lines of inquiry will be pursued’ – we had been receiving messages from concerned people who had tried to pass on information to the police, only to be told, ‘The child is dead.’
Now that this ‘investigation’ had concluded, reports could be channelled directly to our own team, which would give them, we hoped, more to go on. It was certainly better than nothing.

"Uncle Brian had also flown in for a visit. By 2 August, however, those sirens were wailing so loudly I cannot understand how I missed them. And yet I did.
That morning Gerry and I, along with Jon and a colleague, were preparing to drive to Huelva in Spain to put up posters of Madeleine. Jon was intending to do some filming and several of the British journalists were going to join us there, on the give-and-take principle: it would give them a story centred on Madeleine, rather than on us, and this in turn would publicize our efforts. As I was dropping Sean and Amelie off at Toddler Club, I had a phone call from Gerry. The police wanted to come over at 10am. Something to do with forensics, they’d said. Great timing. And forensics? What was that all about?"

Curious, Gerald omits to mention the most important event of the day - the inopportune visit by Eddie and Keela to chez McCann. His wife however makes quite an issue of it in her autobiographical chiclit.

"As we were walking up from the beach at about 5pm, I had a call from Cherie Blair, in her final days as wife of the prime minister (her husband Tony would announce his resignation two days later and leave office the following month). She was kind and helpful. She told me it was amazing but encouraging that Madeleine was still the first topic on the news every night.
This was only five days after the abduction: as it turned out, our poor daughter would continue to headline the bulletins for some time to come. Cherie also warned me, ‘Whatever happens, your life will never be the same again.’
She mentioned that a friend of hers, Catherine Meyer, was the founder of PACT – Parents and Abducted Children Together – and said she would get in touch with her on my behalf. Doubtless I asked Cherie if there was anything the British government could offer the Portuguese in the way of resources to assist or expedite the search for Madeleine. It wasn’t my intention to make her feel uncomfortable by asking this, and I’m sure I didn’t. We were just so desperate I couldn’t let the opportunity go by."

Lori Campbell: It was just very reminiscent of the Soham murders was my first instinct. There was a local guy. He was hanging around the scene an awful lot. He was asking us questions about what was going on in the investigation, maybe trying to find out what we knew and he just seemed to be giving an air that he was authoritative and he was working in an official capacity for the police. And I was just very suspicious about that, that they would take on board a man who was just a local guy. They have many people, I am sure, who speak Portuguese and English. Why would they ask him to, you know, go into the apartment, speak to the family and have that sort of contact with them?
