If it's limited to £75,000 then it sounds like a hollow victory.

Which of course won't matter to the British media.

Shocked and saddened by this, and yes it does suggest the whole whitewash thing is alive and well

I'm confused though. The telegraph article and the BBC say £357K awarded, Sky's banner says £75K and also states they expected to receive £1M...

How does this reflect the judges statement? If it is true can there be any doubt of political interference and justice tampering? And how can this judge ban the book? I reckon it's hogwash. The case wasn't about banning that decision has already been made. Probably more Mcspin. I won't believe anything until Dr Amaral or his solicitor issue a statement.

Former inspector of the PJ will have to pay the parents of Maddie.

The former inspector of the Judicial Police (PJ) Gonçalo Amaral was ordered to pay 500,000 euros to the parents of Madeleine McCann, for damage caused by the publication of a book entitled 'Maddie: The Truth of the Lie', said Tuesday the agency Lusa the lawyer of British couple.

The civil court sentenced Gonçalo Amaral "payable to each of the first [Kate McCann and McCann Gearald] the indemnity amount of 250 thousand euros plus default interest at the legal rate of interest civilians, since January 5, 2010, until full payment ".

Interest for late payment, according to the lawyer of the McCanns, are located at the moment in 106,000 euros. In addition to this payment, the court also ordered the ban on the sale and new editions of the book, even prohibiting new editions of the DVD, as well as selling copyright book and DVD.

This process creeps in court for over five years, with successive postponements of trial sessions and an attempted extrajudicial settlement between the parties, which was never realized.

I believe the £75,000 is the interest payable on top of the damages awarded of £357,000.

So will they just take the money from the funds of his that they had locked up? He hasn`t got any money himself from his earnings because the McCanns had it all frozen - and didn`t they take his house as well ?

Euro to the pound, today, is trading at .72p. So, 500,000 x 72p = £360,000

Deeply saddened at reading those headlines. Doesn't tally with the earlier pronouncements from the Portuguese courts. From those I expected Amaral would have to pay something for the items found against him but nothing of that magnitude. and a magnitude that allows those terrible two to claim victory.

Seriously expect there has been some heavy political interference for the court to arrive at this decision. But it won't stop my endeavours for those two to be constantly reminded of their actions in the tragic disappearance of Madeleine for every second of their remaining lives.

Can a single judge even 'over ride' a legally binding decision/judgement, (re: 'book ban') from Portugal's 'high' court, by 3 Judges?

Methinks that 'that' is what any appeal WILL be 'based' on.

How 'much' have the OTHER 3 'defendents' had to 'pay'?

Presumeably they, pending appeal, have 'lost' also?

I agree Jean. Hardly accurate reporting. Brunt is tweeting they have been awarded over a million! Odd how he gets to know before anyone eelse? Apparently all this is coming from Duarte. Probably as accurate as her 'confirmation' that they were triumphant in their claim.
