Justice works in silence.....and very slowly in Portugal .....especially when the the Mcs are involved. They like to make last minute submissions ...and dawdle on...in last minute attempt to claw back something ....especially when the sign of their coveted $$$$ doesn't look promising / forthcoming.

Ominous sign for the other side too I fear, whatever this hiccup causing this delay.

Something normally leaks out - like when the Mc Canns posted their Ward of court info earlier than expected.

This is like a dark silence - although in reality maybe it is simply the Courts being held up over Easter and taking their time. winkwink

I have to say that the longer the dark silence - the more optimistic I feel - although my thoughts are with Amaral, who either 'knows' and is keeping quiet or is having a very stressful wait for the outcome.

Gonçalo Amaral was ordered to pay compensation of 500,000 euros to the McCanns, because of "True Lies."

The decision of the Civil Court of Lisbon was known today and also prohibits the sale of the book on the disappearance of Maddie.

The parents of the English child had sued the former Inspector of Judicial Police for moral damages.

They complained of the emotional and psychological impact of the publication for the whole family.
The book rejects the abduction theory and argues that the child died accidentally in the Algarve in 2007.

It adds that parents were responsible for hiding the corpse.

The book's publisher is thus prohibited from publishing new editions and has to hand over all copies that already exist.

The Valentim de Carvalho, who produced the television documentary based on the book, is also allowed to sell more copies.

The defense of the accused can now appeal the decision.

Just got home from work and saw this on the main headlines on the BBC teletext. On there it says he must pay damages of £357,000 and interest in excess of £70,000.
This is absolutely dreadful news. How on earth has it come to this?

We live in a mad world where the guilty are rewarded and treated like royalty while the innocent are vilified. I feel so stupid for believing that Sn Armaral would win against the mighty McCanns and those who protect them. I also would love to know why they are protected, IMHO it's paedophilia. I hope Sn Armaral appeals against this absurd decision. Does this mean we'll have to see Gerry's smirking face and Kate's martyr look in the MSM??? Where is the justice?? Poor Madeleine to have had such rotten,evil money grabbing parents. I now do not believe that Operation Grange will be a honest investigation, just another coverup/whitewash. I feel disgusted and depressed at the thought of these two celebrating yet another win. angry2

Maybe the Portuguese judges aren't so daft and have awarded damages that are just sufficiently big (but no bigger) that Amaral must appeal. Because they have probably resigned themselves to the fact that that is the only way the whole truth can now get out.

Or am I now being absurdly optimistic?

Well, I doubt it's the end of it. The appeal will go on, for just as long as this has imo.

If the pros think Dr. A is going to pay up, pack up and leave they're very much mistaken... again just my opinion.

More and more I'm thinking that the Portuguese judges may have made a clever move here. If Amaral had won, that would (and should) have had no bearing on the criminal case. The UK whitewash could then just have continued and the case could then be gently wound up. Amaral wouldn't, realistically, be able to do anything if he'd won. This way they're forcing him to fight back ... and he now still has every right to do so.

Just loose, ill-formed thoughts at the moment. But I think it may not be quite as bad as it first looked.

The point is that the Portuguese judges are actually keeping the case alive in a potentially more effective way than if they'd come out in favour of Amaral.

They did claim for the children.
The judge threw it out as total nonsense
AND, or should we say BUT
the twins are specifically named in the judgment amongst those who have to pay the legal costs of the previous action, also brought in their name.
(As incidentally is Madeleine, though how she is supposed to find the money in her "Hellish Lair" is anyone's guess.)
Lovely parents who would saddle their own children with a legal dept in a foreign Country, in an action where they were victims of serial abandonment and neglect

I've travelled quite a lot and I wasn't aware that my passport check would reveal debt to anyone or any government....fascinating.

I do remember there was a time you could not leave the Netherlands without paying in full for outstanding tickets. That was long ago however, and before the EU.
