The government has now changed. The current Home Secretary now heads MI5. If she inherited a legacy of MI5's involvement - then she surely had to make a new assessment of why they were involved and whether, in the new government, this was still appropriate. Also, whatever she inherited was not necessarily explained in full to her - she may have been fed 'not the whole truth' about why that government had politically interfered.

Hence this review by SY may have uncovered more than was bargained for and this government
have to both unravel and decide how best to conclude this. They will surely, almost certainly, be being subject to pressure from the former government not to throw this whole affair out in to the sunlight. Therefore DC is the man who has to find out the truth and then decide how to play it, whether to continue the cover up is better or not. It has to be this simple.

The arrival of the Clarence Mitchel on the scene is also a good indicator that something or someone was to be kept out of the public domain. How many parents of a missing child get to have a government mouthpiece to speak on their behalf? Imo this was to make sure that in the early days the McCann's didn't let slip anything that might have given the game away.

I mention again the smiling/smirking face of GM. This is the face of a man that has the satisfaction of knowing that he is above reproach.

If you look back upon the investigation these last seven years you could be forgiven in thinking that there has been a massive cover up.
The Gaspar statements. Why did it take six months for these documents to get to the Portuguese investigation?

Was it true that the semen stain collected on the bed near the window morphed into a saliva stain once back in the UK? Funny how all samples sent back for analysis came back with the same result.... inconclusive.

The chain of command is Home Secretary presiding over MI5.
Whatever reason MIU5 were involved by former Home Sec of Labour government- their remit will have changed with Conservative / Lib Gov.

I sincerely hope that Dr Amaral stays safe on the roads in the coming weeks.

IMO people who consistently speak up about what they are convinced is the truth, in opposition to what appears to be an ongoing whitewash, frequently end up having accidents.

As far as I recall, Brown was still Chancellor when he became involved. It was at a very early stage.

I could be remembering incorrectly though.

There was a definite time when GM suddenly felt he was protected. This may well have been when GB took over from Blair witch on June 27th 2007. Suddenly the portuguese investigation was thwarted and 7 long years of charade began.

I just think that the political interference was a 'Labour' orientated interference. MI5 answers to the Home Sec and now we have a different government, MI5 / SY are not working for the same set of people.

Whatever needed to be covered up in May 2007 - why should we assume that DC's government were given all the information relating to that. Surely Labour would not have disclosed their dirty linen for the Conservatives to use.

Things may have changed since 2007 and maybe certain people no longer need protecting but I believe at the end of the day there are factions within the intelligence agencies that use our political parties to carry out their agendas and not the other way round, labour vs. conservative would not really come into it.
