Praia da Luz will next week become the centre of the world’s focus as attention once again shifts to the village as police renew their quest to find missing British toddler Madeleine McCann.

“In principle, work on the ground should commence at the beginning of next week” a police source told The Portugal News on Thursday afternoon.
“Work should last a few days” the source said, suggesting searches would probably not last into next weekend.
“Permission has been granted in recent days for British police to join us in searches. There were some finer details in need of further clarification, which have since been received. Searches, at least from a legal standpoint are ready to begin”, the high-ranking police source continued, stressing however that no field operations would start before next Monday, at the earliest.
Nonetheless, detectives were spotted visiting the site where searches will be taking place on Wednesday and “we expect there might even be a few more visits before field operations begin in earnest”, it was explained
As reported previously in The Portugal News (see 17 May edition), Portuguese prosecutors have only given permission for searches on the ground to take place in one single area.
“Scotland Yard have requested that work be done on two other sites, but no approval has yet been granted”, the source said.
The Attorney-General’s office in Lisbon on Thursday afternoon sent a statement to The Portugal News confirming it had received a new International Letter of Request from the Crown Prosecution Service “relating to the disappearance of the minor Madeleine McCann”.
Portuguese police have since stressed that they would be assisting their British counterparts throughout the operation to the best of their abilities and would continue to do so should any future searches be approved.
In the meantime, a number of resources are expected to be used in the upcoming search, ranging from earth-penetrating radar equipment to the use of dogs.
Police here also cautioned that they would immediately stop field operations should they feel their work was being restricted by the expected “media circus”.
PJ police in Lisbon said this week that “while we cannot expect the media to stay away, we ask that they allow police to do their work unhindered or leave us with no option but to call off the entire operation”.
Meanwhile, Praia da Luz Mayor Vítor Mata told The Portugal News earlier this month that the “people of Luz are tired of this case”, but added that “searches like these are always worth it, so long as the authorities have concrete evidence to back them up”.
However, he added that council workers spend their time in the town on a daily basis and said they would be the first people to notice if something were out of place or if there was a site police should investigate.
Police from the GNR in Lagos did not comment on the case when questioned on Wednesday, but seemed resigned to the fact that they will be on additional traffic duty for much of the coming week.

Why are there such leaks when the PJ themselves warned the operations could be stopped because of them?

Funny you should say that Poe. Not a media scrum exactly but how odd that this article - ostensibly about Charlize Theron and press intrusion - should pop up on Sky News today. Just at the very moment we are told the police are digging for MBM's body in Portugal, we are sent a loud echo of the mental rape of KM by the press.

Charlize Theron says press coverage of her private life is so intrusive that it is comparable to rape.

The South African-born actress told Sky News that "every aspect" of her life has become "fodder" for a brand of journalism that exists "in a dark room".

She said: "I don't (Google myself) - that's my saving grace.

"When you start living in that world, and doing that, you start feeling raped. "Asked whether she meant to express the sentiment as strongly as that, she replied: "Well, when it comes to your son and your private life. Maybe it's just me.

"Some people might relish in all that stuff but there are certain things in my life that I think of as very sacred and I am very protective over them.

"I don't always win that war but as long as I don't have to see that stuff or read that stuff or hear that stuff then I can live with my head in a clear space, which is probably a lot healthier than living in that dark room."

She is not the first person to draw parallels between media intrusion and rape.

In 2010 the actress Kristen Stewart was forced to issue an apology after claiming that seeing photographs of herself was like "looking at someone being raped".

Kate McCann, the mother of missing child Madeleine McCann, told the Leveson Inquiry into press ethics that she felt "mentally raped" when a tabloid newspaper published her private diary, in which she expressed her thoughts and feelings about the disappearance of her daughter.

Exactly

I am wondering about the possibilities either it's not from a high ranking police source and the media are making it up or
it's from a high ranking police source but they are being allowed to talk to the media, which would be against Portugal's judicial secrecy laws and it would be a high ranking officer breaking them!

The newspaper claimed that the 135-page 'journal', written on an A4 pad, had been passed to them by a Portuguese reporter. Both The Sun and the News of the World published apologies and made an undisclosed payment to Madeleine's Fund. Madeleine McCann fund received £125,000 from News of the World

Confidential deal towards search fund for Madeleine was part of apology for tabloid's publication of mother Kate's diary extracts

The News of the World paid £125,000 to the fund supporting the search for Madeleine McCann as part of an apology for publishing Kate McCann's diaries – on condition that the terms of the deal remained secret

The payment was made after the missing girl's parents expressed their outrage at the story, which Kate McCann said made her feel "mentally raped". All the parties involved in the negotiations over the payment, which was agreed in September 2008, were asked to sign a confidentiality agreement hiding the scale of the newspaper's culpability.

Did THIS 'secret payment' ever show up in the 'fund' accounts?

Wonder whether she feels mentally raped when press print imminent dig for the body when she believes Maddie is still alive?

Are they going to sue the Papers for mentioning the 'body' 'dead' and 'final resting place'?

Are they going to be say it is irresponsible reporting; and is Gerry going to continue to push for individual journalist to be punished ?
