BRITAIN’S top policeman vowed to keep going in the hunt to discover what happened to Madeleine McCann after Scotland Yard’s major operations this summer.

The little girl was three when she vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in May 2007.

In June and July, suspects were questioned and huge areas in the Algarve were searched by specialist police squads and dogs – with Yard detectives in attendance.

Operation Grange was launched in May 2011 after Madeleine’s parents Gerry, 45, and Kate, 46, of Rothley, Leics, appealed to David Cameron.

Around 40 detectives and civilian staff are dedicated to the inquiry, which has so far cost an estimated £6million.

Yesterday, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said: “The investigation is still ongoing and we will not be reducing the team.”

He praised Portuguese authorities for allowing Yard detectives to take part in the summer search.

“A reasonable amount of progress has been made,” he added.

However, no trace of Madeleine has been found and police have no idea what happened to her.

Sir Bernard believes the ideal way to tackle the case is with a joint squad of British and Portuguese police.

That would speed up many aspects of the inquiry, but authorities in Lisbon are against the move.

Suspicion has focused on drug addict Euclides Monteiro.

Monteiro, who served a jail term for burglary, died in a tractor accident, aged 40, in 2009.

His widow says he had nothing to do with the disappearance.

Following this year’s searches, Gerry and Kate McCann said they were encouraged by the lack of evidence to suggest Madeleine was murdered.

They are convinced their daughter could still be alive and will one day be returned to them.

Scotland Yard is offering £20,000 as a reward for information.

Unbelievable, seem's to me he is saying regardless of any public opinion the search will go on, that they have nobody to answer to but the McCanns. Are they planting the seed of Tractorman again?

God only knows what the parents of all the other missing children must be feeling when they read again another McCann story.

"... and police have no idea what happened to her". ??  I don't believe that assertion.

Following this year’s searches, Gerry and Kate McCann said they were encouraged by the lack of evidence to suggest Madeleine was murdered.  I think they're referring to the dogs.

Yeah, right....?

So what progress would that be ?

The 38 'solely dedicated' MET 'maddie cops' now KNOW where the best 'bars' are in the Algave!

That's gotta be 'progress' ain't it?

They were having to use right 'dives' when they first went on the first few trips of their 26 'visits' to Portugal to date!

SO, BHH still desperately trying to get access to what the PJ haven't 'shared'!

First McCann 'story' for a while.

Remind me WHEN did Cameron get 'back' from his Portuguese 'holiday'?

That would be 2 days ago!

And then we get the MET 'big cheese' (not the lowly DCI, Operation Grange, lead investigator) coming out with this, er, umm, 'update' statement.

Hmmmmmmmm.

Purely coincidental, i'm sure  winkwink

ps: It's alright, Mr Bernard, nobody noticed, your statement on the Madeleine 'case' coinciding with YOUR 'big boss' return from Portugal.  winkwink

I guess CR knocked it of the front page, maybe tomorrow!

The little girl was three when she vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in May 2007.

No mention of parents dinnig out with friends when it happened, when comments have been allowed, mainly in the Mail most of them are about the McCanns leaving their children alone while they enjoyed themselves, they want people to forget they neglected their three children.

No.

What we WILL see, in the fall, is a huge 38 strong, solely dedicated 'maddie cops' OG 'on the ground, in Portugal' just a few days before the libel case 'decision'!

imo, obviously.

The 'team' can also top up on their crimbo party, DCI Andy's 'retirement' bash, 'supplies', with all those luvverly jubbly, duty 'frees' on their return from Portugal!

"Good one Andy, me ol' china, y'know it makes sense!"

All, imo..........

Then start doing some proper police work, instead of chasing imaginary burglars and smelly bin men.  You know what to do.  You know where to look.  You know who to ask.   If you mean what you say,  DO IT!

Sadly it does seem to be the path they follow.  They can't wind it up yet as the libel case hasn't been completed.

I wonder if his position on the case will change when a verdict is reached?

Euclides Monteiro has an alibi for the time when Maddie disappeared, his DNA was tested back in 2008 and no matches were found, he does not have a record of child sex abuse
In Algarve there are no official police records of a "man who allegedly targeted only British children" and who broke into Britons houses to specifically sexually abuse their white, blue-eyed and blonde little English girls as described by DCI Andy Redwood in his latest media performances, nor have any of the locals or the British expat community have any recollection of such events taking place in the past 10 years.
Euclides Monteiro's widow has lost her job in the consequence of the exposure of her name in the UK media (Mirror, Daily Mail, Daily Star, etc). Euclides Monteiro's alibi is a poem that he wrote at 21h00 of 3rd of May 2007, that his wife found in the computer, a series of poems that were now published posthumously.

So STRAIGHT from the horses mouth!

Around 40 detectives/staff costing estimated £6million

Actually it's 38 solely dedicated police/staff, over THREE YEARS dedicated investigation, at a cost nearer £9.5 million.

And the 'big cheese' at the Metropolitan Police, the UK's most 'elite' force, NOW says:

"THE SOLELY DEDICATED 38 STRONG ELITE POLICE 'TEAM' HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED TO HER!"

So, OVER THREE YEARS, 38 DEDICATED MADDIE 'COPS' and £9.5 MILLON and.........................NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED!

Good job it wasn't a 'hard, complex, case' they had been tasked to 'investigate'!

If i were cyinical, which i'm not, i'd suspect there was some 'bad news that the MET needed burying'. After all it is a Friday.

Traditionally the day to 'bury' bad news.

The 'plebs' will all have 'forgotten' by Monday!

Does anyone know if say, two under cover MET cops, that BHH dosen't/didn't know 'exist'  winkwink were exposed or named today, in the media?

This case is so damn frustrating.

Met chief vows no let-up in search for Madeleine XifHvBX

The line "However, no trace of Madeleine has been found and police have no idea what happened to her", should be taken with a huge bucket of salt. It wasn't said by BHH or anyone else from the Met IMO.

Once you edit out the fluff and opinion, you are left with:

“The investigation is still ongoing and we will not be reducing the team.”

He praised Portuguese authorities for allowing Yard detectives to take part in the summer search.

“A reasonable amount of progress has been made,” he added.

Who is going to pony up the £20,000 reward for info, should the need arise? Am I to assume it's the British taxpayer again?

I don't suppose it matters when so much more has already been spent on this apparent non-starter of an investigation.

All in my opinion. Allegedly. Etc.

Then why is Scotland Yard offering £20,000 for further information? If as result of this 3 year review / investigation members of the public have fingered you know who and they're still appealing for info what more is there for the public to do.

They're just stalling for time until September.

The £20,000 reward has been offered since at least October last year hasn't it? The Met/OG, rightly or wrongly, asked the press earlier this year to politely STFU, not to expect updates and let them and the PJ get on investigating.

This article to me is the Express getting desperate for information on the case. All they got were two (short) sentences.

For any policeman not to do their job properly and not to get justice for a little girl whose selfish parents decided to put themselves before the most important defenceless little children, is disgusting. These so called parents have already got away with neglect, I don't know what way this will end up or if they've been reinterviewed by OG, but put it this way, if it was you or I and cadaver and blood dogs alerted within our homes and car I seriously doubt we'd be touring the world? Sorry everyone, I'm just so fed up. The least OG can do is explain why they aren't POIs, but they can't, can they?
