The Jill Dando case was such a long time ago though, 1999, things have moved on so much from there, the internet for example. Would they dare to whitewash Madeleine's case, there could be huge repercussions if they tried, I would think.

They don't need to rope them all in. Just a few key players. IMHO they have done that.

It depends on what the cover up is about. I suspect something big that needs to remain covered up, hence the unprecedented protection the mccanns have had since day 1. They know too many people are questioning this abduction still after 6 years, and their inconsistencies and lies have been fully exposed, in their position they need to end the story with a result as most people will drift away then. History is a great teacher, and things fundamentally never really change over time, its just dressed differently

There may be just a few key players in the disappearance of Madeleine, but what about the Fund, if it was fraudulent or not - Metodo 3 (money launderers?) for example.

ETA: I've just remembered that when I had to fight a litigation case that was taken out against me I had to sign a solicitor's document regarding "money laundering". What that had to do with my litigation case, I have no idea, but obviously it is an obligation all solicitor's clients have to sign.

No doubt the McCanns also had to sign the same document when they took on Carter Ruck, so if it comes out in a trial that they had in fact been money laundering their "fund" through Metodo 3 and K Helligan, I wonder what the outcome of that would be?

Yes as enthusiastic as I have tried to be recently this is something I cannot ignore.  

There is still apart of me that thinks this renewed effort is a way of trying to make sure Amaral doesn't have some trump card up his sleeve which expose all the dodgy dealings in the early days.  They could well be using the CPS to get access to files he may have to make sure the Government/Police dirty laundry is not aired during the up coming trial.

No, she was a huge fan of Cliff Richard, in fact, it was made possible, by the BBC I think, that she met up with him on one of her programmes and he asked her to dance with him (she didn't know anything about it). She was in seventh heaven. If she had been looking into paedo rings I don't think she would have been dancing with Cliff, IMOH.

If there is a link here, then the media should also revisit the show trial of Barry George, the mentally ill patsy who was originally charged with Dando’s killing, but was eventually acquitted for the murder in 2008

How nasty a piece of work Savile was I don't think he would have gone as far as having Jill Dando shot in the head to get rid of her, I'm sure he would have thought of more subtle ways of getting her removed from the BBC.  

The most obvious form of getting rid of her came from the Serbian government -

Alarm Over Secret Catholic Mason Group

HOME OFFICE ministers are becoming increasingly concerned about the secretive activities of a group of Catholic "Freemasons", the Catenians.
A special report by the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee has highlighted fears that members of the Catenian Association, which is thought to include top-ranking police officers and judges, are using their influence to pervert the course of justice.
The role of the Association came to light during a two-year investigation into Freemasonry conducted by the Committee.
Acting on the advice of the Committee, the Government has ordered the police and judiciary to set up their own databases listing membership of masonic lodges. But individuals are under no legal obligation to reveal their masonic links; and the database will not cover Catenians.
The report, Freemasonry in the Police and the Judiciary, states: "It is estimated that they [the Catenians] number around 11,500. Although this figure shows that the Catenians are far fewer in number than the Freemasons, this does not mean that similar concerns are not raised relating to their influence on the criminal justice system. Where points of principle relating to secretive societies are made in this report, they apply equally to other organisations of the same nature."
The Freemasons have attacked the Government for scrutinising their activities while not also focusing on groups like the Catenians who, like the Freemasons, are exclusively male. Catenians are hand-picked from the Catholic community and, to gain entry, applicants must be sponsored by a member.
The membership list is a closely guarded secret and new recruits are required to take an oath of allegiance to their "brothers". These oaths are made at secret ceremonies, held in hotels or golf clubs, where members wear special insignia including a Maltese cross and ceremonial collar denoting the "circle" to which they belong, as well as pendants and sashes.
The organisation, which was founded in 1908 in Manchester as the Chums Benevolent Association, has its own website. This describes the organisation, which operates worldwide, as a brotherhood that meets to "foster and develop social bonds among members and their families".
The Catenian Association is quick to quash any parallels between the activities of its members and those of Freemasons. "Like most organisations we regard information such as our list of members as privileged," added a spokesman.

First, which trial? The trial of whom?

In answer to your substantive question, I answer in general terms as follows: In any criminal trial, a convicted person may be required to pay (a) towards the prosecution's costs and (b) towards the victim's costs (a 'compensation order').

In drug-dealing and certain other serious criminal cases, the court can order the seizure of the convicted person's assets (exactly how much they can seize and on what basis I am not sure).
