Interesting article from the Sunday Express 11th Oct 2009.

Dave Edgar and Arthur Cowley explain what they think happened to Madeleine.

MADELEINE EXCLUSIVE: ALL THREE CHILDREN DRUGGED

MISSING: Madeleine McCann
Sunday October 11,2009
By James Murray The kidnapper of Madeleine McCann drugged her and her twin brother and sister so they would all be quiet while she was snatched.

A duplicate key may also have been used to gain entrance to the holiday apartment where the children were sleeping, say investigators.

It means the monster is still a threat to children living or holidaying on Portugal’s Algarve and must be caught urgently as he is highly likely to reoffend.

Former police detectives David Edgar and Arthur Cowley have spent months re-analysing every shred of evidence.

They are convinced the abductor went to the family’s apartment on May 3 2007 fully prepared with sufficient drugs, probably chloroform, to knock out all three children.

The fact that Sean and Amelie, then just 18 months old, failed to wake when the alarm was raised, nor even as they were taken to another apartment in the cold night air, has persuaded the detectives that they, too, must have been drugged.

Had the twins been tested for drugs immediately, any medication used could have been established, making it easier to identify the kidnapper, but vital time was lost.

Chloroform can be made easily and other sedatives, such as the horse tranquilliser ketamine, are commonly in circulation in the criminal underworld.

Even now, however, experts say there may be forensic clues on clothing or bedding which could yield a breakthrough.

The Sunday Express can further reveal that the McCanns’ private detectives are working on a solid theory about exactly how Madeleine was abducted.

SEARCH UK NEWS for:

Just as television investigator Donal MacIntyre suggested in this paper three weeks ago, they believe there was a dry run prior to the kidnap that fateful night at apartment 5a of the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz.

While checking the layout of the apartment the night before, the kidnapper probably woke Sean, who in turn woke Madeleine. In the morning she had told Kate and Gerry she was frightened.

The fact that the children woke up is thought to have persuaded the kidnapper to use knock-out drugs when he returned the next night to take Madeleine, three.

On the question of the duplicate key, holidaymakers often left front door keys under the doormats during the day.
A theory emerging is that the kidnapper had a duplicate key to apartment 5a, which could have been used on the night to enter by the front door.

Mr Edgar and Mr Cowley do not believe Madeleine was taken through an open window as it would have been awkward, time consuming and there were no forensic clues left behind.

It is far more likely, they say, that he simply walked out of the front door with her in his arms. It had been thought that the front door was double locked, making it impossible to open from the inside, but this doubt falls away if there was a duplicate key.

The theory suggests the kidnapper had been targeting the apartment for a long time and had a detailed knowledge of the lock system.

With the front door unlocked, it is easy to simply pull a latch across to open it from the inside.

Another possibility is that the front door was not double-locked when Kate and Gerry left through the unlocked patio doors to join their seven friends at the resort’s tapas bar some 30 metres from their apartment.

Meanwhile it emerged yesterday that the parents of a two-year-old girl who has gone missing in New Zealand are being supported by the McCanns.

Aisling Symes vanished from a relative’s house in an Auckland suburb on Monday.

Her mother Angela had been close by, standing beside a washing machine.

There have been reports that the girl was later seen with a woman of Asian appearance.

Detectives believe she was abducted. Despite repeated appeals for help their searches have so far drawn a blank.
Kate and Gerry McCann said their “thoughts and prayers” were with the family.

The little girl’s father, Allan Symes, who is originally from County Waterford in Ireland, made an emotional plea for her return, saying: “These recent days have proven to be the most harrowing of our lives; no sleep and we feel like we’re barely existing, just surviving every moment, not knowing where Aisling is.”

It has also emerged that police in Sweden are trying to find a girl said to bear a resemblance to Madeleine after a photograph was posted on a website.

However, she does not appear to have the distinctive mark Madeleine has in her right eye.

So, according to the private plods, Bundleman must have walked slap bang into Gerry on exiting the apartment via the patio doors.

Why oh why would you perform a dummy run of stealing a child?

I really do not understand this claim at all. Surely, if you have got in the apartment once you would grab the child and hot foot it away as fast as you could? Why would you go there to do a practice run and then leave without the child only to have to come back the next night and go through it all again, hence doubling your chances of getting caught?

Maybe I am missing something obvious.

Take care

MADELEINE EXCLUSIVE: ALL THREE CHILDREN DRUGGED

MISSING: Madeleine McCann
Sunday October 11, 2009
By James Murray

The kidnapper of Madeleine McCann drugged her and her twin brother and sister so they would all be quiet while she was snatched.

This is one way we can explain why the twins never woke up

A duplicate key may also have been used to gain entrance to the holiday apartment where the children were sleeping, say investigators.

We need to get right away from the 'jemmying the shutters' theory because that's being ridiculed

It means the monster is still a threat to children living or holidaying on Portugal’s Algarve and must be caught urgently as he is highly likely to reoffend.

We need to keep feeding that 'paedophile monster' theory

Former police detectives David Edgar and Arthur Cowley have spent months re-analysing every shred of evidence.

Er, does that include Dr Kate McCann allegedly finding the window wide open, the shutters open, and the curtains blowing in the wind PLUS only Dr Kate McCann's finger on the window frame?

They are convinced the abductor went to the family’s apartment on May 3 2007 fully prepared with sufficient drugs, probably chloroform, to knock out all three children.

'Convinced' - a very 'Dave' word, that one, just like according to the Belfast Telegraph a month earlier he was 'convinced' that Madeleine was being kept in a prison lair within 10 miles of Praia da Luz in the 'lawless hills around'.

The fact that Sean and Amelie, then just 18 months old, failed to wake when the alarm was raised, nor even as they were taken to another apartment in the cold night air, has persuaded the detectives that they, too, must have been drugged.

But by whom?

Had the twins been tested for drugs immediately...

The McCanns left it until October - over 5 months later, I wonder why?

...any medication used could have been established, making it easier to identify the kidnapper, but vital time was lost.

Exactly!

Chloroform can be made easily and other sedatives, such as the horse tranquilliser ketamine, are commonly in circulation in the criminal underworld.

So just how many times - ever - has a child been kidnapped from inside a home using drugs like chloroform or ketamine?

Even now, however, experts say there may be forensic clues on clothing or bedding which could yield a breakthrough.

Or on a tennis bag or on Dr Kate McCann's clothes or on Cuddle Cat or in the Renault Scenic?

The Sunday Express can further reveal that the McCanns’ private detectives are working on a solid theory about exactly how Madeleine was abducted.

That fits in nicely with our claim that Madeleine and Sean were crying during the night of 3rd May - you see, it wasn't our fault, it was the kidnapper's

The fact that the children woke up is thought to have persuaded the kidnapper to use knock-out drugs when he returned the next night to take Madeleine.

A theory based on not one jot of evidence.

On the question of the duplicate key, holidaymakers often left front door keys under the doormats during the day. A theory emerging is that the kidnapper had a duplicate key to apartment 5a, which could have been used on the night to enter by the front door.

Yes, we really must squash that 'jemmying the shutters' story for once and for all

Mr Edgar and Mr Cowley do not believe Madeleine was taken through an open window as it would have been awkward, time consuming and there were no forensic clues left behind.

They must have been reading the forums or Reason No. 7 in '60 Reasons'*

It is far more likely, they say, that he simply walked out of the front door with her in his arms. It had been thought that the front door was double locked, making it impossible to open from the inside, but this doubt falls away if there was a duplicate key.

A duplicate key - the key to it all. Phew!

The theory suggests the kidnapper had been targeting the apartment for a long time and had a detailed knowledge of the lock system.

But no-one saw him 'targeting the apartment for a long time'

With the front door unlocked, it is easy to simply pull a latch across to open it from the inside.
Another possibility is that the front door was not double-locked when Kate and Gerry left through the unlocked patio doors to join their seven friends at the resort’s tapas bar some 30 metres from their apartment.

We just can't remember now what we did

Dave and Arthur's New Theory Revisited Empty What really happened to Aisling Symes?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO AISLING SYMES?

This is sad, but for the record I reproduce some of the details here from the Wikipedia article:

The disappearance of Aisling Celine Symes, a two-year-old girl of Irish and New Zealand descent, occurred on 5 October 2009 in New Zealand. It was initially thought the girl had been abducted, but on 12 October 2009 it was confirmed that a body had been located in a storm water drain on a property adjoining the one from where she went missing. The body was confirmed to be Aisling's.

Aisling's parents are Angela and Allan Symes. Allan Symes is originally from Stradbally, County Waterford in Ireland. He had lived in New Zealand for 18 years at the time of Aisling's disappearance. The last known person to see Aisling was her five-year-old sister Caitlin.

A description issued of an Asian woman believed to have been near the crime scene prompted a number of incidents where Asian mothers were targeted by curious members of the public.

The disappearance attracted headlines in New Zealand and Ireland, particularly as child abduction is an unusual occurrence in New Zealand. One New Zealand police inspector claimed on Morning Ireland that only five children had disappeared in his country in the previous fifty years. The New Zealand Herald said nine children had disappeared without trace in the country in sixty years, at least two cases of which involved more than one child at a time. Forty members of New Zealand's police force were quickly put on the case. This had risen to sixty by the end of the first week and was set to rise again before her body was located.

Sophie Tedmanson of The Times newspaper compared Aisling's case to that of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, a famous missing person's case in the United Kingdom. Paul Chapman did the same in The Daily Telegraph. Her parents have said their "thoughts and prayers" are with the Symes family. They lived in New Zealand for a time prior to their marriage. The grandfather of Amber-Lee Cruickshank, a two-year-old child who disappeared in late 1992, also sent his regards, saying "It's not very nice, I tell you".

Aisling Symes was playing in the garden of her mother's childhood home on Longburn Road with her five-year-old sister Caitlin at the time of her disappearance at approximately 17:00 local time on 5 October 2009. Aisling was playing with her new toy, a Pooh Bear, a toy which had recently been purchased. Angela Symes was cleaning the house and planning to sell it. She kept her daughters within sight and their dog was also nearby.

Aisling and Caitlin joined their mother occasionally as she cleaned, even helping when she had to fix a faulty washing machine. While working on the faulty washing machine, Angela noticed Aisling had suddenly disappeared and commenced fifteen minutes of searching before calling in the police. There were initial fears that she had drowned in a creek that ran behind the property.

At least one hundred people from across the city commenced a search which had ended by 9 October when Aisling was not found. By 7 October, police expressed a fear that Aisling had been abducted. Police commenced door-to-door searches.Bilingual speakers of Asian languages assisted by knocking on doors and requests for assistance were transmitted on Asian radio stations.

At 9:30 pm on October 12, the police reported that they had found a body in a drain near the Symes house. At around 9.40 am on October 13, police confirmed that the body they found was that of Aisling Symes

Monday 12th at just before 8:00 pm police activity increased as they closed in on a house in West Auckland. Police later confirmed in a press conference in the morning of October 13 that the body found that night in a drainpipe in Henderson was that of two-year-old missing toddler Aisling Symes. Police inspector Gary Davey, head of the Aisling inquiry, says the body was removed from the scene at 1am of October 13. Mr Davey says the body of Aisling probably lay in a drain within metres of scores of police and searchers for days after she disappeared. The body of the two-year-old was found on the night of October 12 in a drain a short distance from the house she disappeared from on Monday last week. The drain, that was two metres below the ground, was thoroughly searched by officers with special search techniques used to check the drain. Mr Davey says cameras were used to reach 9-10 metres into the drain, but the search proved fruitless.

A decision was then made to dig up part of the drain, a digger was called in and it took five hours until Aisling's body was finally found inside. When police were first called to the Longburn Rd house on Monday last week a police officer searched the pipe three times, Mr Davey said. The manhole cover was ajar about 10 cm and the first police officer looked down the pipe and there was no sign of a body. "He called out and did not hear anything other than running water,' Mr Davey said.

The officer then searched towards the stream and 15 minutes later returned to the manhole, climbed about two metres down the larger access pipe after moving the manhole cover back. He shone his torch down the smaller 375mm drain at the bottom and could see nothing. He also called her name but there was no response. "He believed he could see five metres up into the drain and five metres down the drain." The drain was searched for a third time later in the night by search and rescue searchers, Mr Davey said. During the search Aisling's father Alan Symes also climbed down the pipe and looked for his daughter, said Mr Davey. Mr Davey says it is too early to tell how Aisling got into the drain, but police believe no foul play was involved. "I believe it is more likely or not that she was there from the start and I believe it is misadventure," he says. He says police are still treating the Henderson property as a crime scene, and that they are keeping an "open mind" about the situation.

Waitakere Police later said the results of a post mortem on Aisling Symes were consistent with drowning. Inspector Gary Davey, Waitakere Area Police Commander, said he was unable to comment on the specific details of the autopsy but there was no evidence of injury. Aisling's body was later released to her family.

Well no need to do that Old GM landed himself in the proverbial on the Panorama programme and its graphics the commentator did not say how he entred the apartment but the foot steps appeared to go to the front door and suggesting he used a key then left by the patio doors.. Didn't his statment advise he used a key to get in as well Ive forgotten now.

Oh well

It appears that the child wandered out to a place nearby where the child fell to its death, without the mother knowing about it.

If there was a garden, was there a secure gate?

If no garden, how far was she prepared to allow the child to wander in the street without keeping proper supervision?

These are my questions having read the account for the first time on Wikipedia today.

I would guess that 99% of people who read the same material would also have precisely the same questions.

I remember when my daughter was two years old the milkman used to gain access to our house via the back garden (as the road was at the back of the house) and he left the gate unlatched and my daughter wandered off with her little pram and doll. I believe I was also tending to my washing machine at the time.

Luckily she hadn't got to the end of the cul de sac by the time I ran after her and found her.

Another minute or so and she'd have been out on the main road and anyone could have picked her up and taken her.

That incident shocked the life out of me and, after having a word with the milkman, he never left the gate unsecure again, and I never let the milkman - or anyone else for that matter - go away without checking the gate. It really does take just a matter of minutes if your attention is diverted.

Whereas 5A, the hired car, the key-fob and clothing etc.. appeared to be somewhat terribly contaminated by the above. Althought the FSS have done some wild back-tracking on their original findings.

What a great pity that the Portuguese police should have put so much trust into this establishment. It is to be hoped that they have learned a lesson here.
