Sunday World (29/04/2012) I cannot get a link for this to work , so this is the article by Donal MacIntyre:
SATELLITE CAMERA CLIPS GIVEN TO MADDIE COPS
Material from top secret satellite US spy cameras which were recording material near the resort where MMC disappeared five years ago has been reviewed in the new investigation into the case. The spy cameras which can detect the number plate of a car from five miles up, had been denied to the Portuguese authorities but details of it have been confidentially released to the UK review team to help with the latest enquiry.
It is believed that the US authorities have been relunctant to let their technology and satellite footprint into the public domain but back door diplomatic channels has resulted in the material being reviewed from the night she disappeared and all relevant information being passed onto Operation Grange, the team conducting the re-investigation.
The satellite could have shown cars around the Praia da Luz, Mark Warner complex, revealing key movements in the hours before and after the supposed abduction on May 3rd 2007.
A red car was spotted by witnesses on the night and it is possible that information relating to this and other vehicles could have been sourced by the satellite company.
Previously there was concern over cloud cover but it was sporadic on the night in question which would have allowed the satellites to garner information on the ground.
Meanwhile, a diplomatic was has broken out between the UK and Portuguese Police forces over the refusal of the Potuguese authorities to follow up on the satellite and other leads generated by the 1.5 million euro investigation conducted by more than 30 Metropolitian Police Officers.
The Met Police are furious at the snub which leaves the case closed in Portugal, denying any further investigation by the authority into the disapperance of Maddie, who would now be aged nine. ( Donal MacIntyre Sunday World 29/04/2012 )

Re: Reference Madeline in Irish papers today ..
There is a dreadful article by Eilis O'Hanlon on P.14 of the Sunday Independent, the biggest sellling paper in Ireland.
It is headlined - THE SAD RISE OF CYBER COURTS FULL OF TWITTERING BULLIES.
the title explains her angle.
She concludes that she hopes Leveson does not end up making it 'harder than ever for journalists to do their job...'
Seems to me journalists have not been doing their jobs re this case.

Here it is............
Eilis O'Hanlon: The sad rise of cyber courts full of Twittering bullies
Normal decency does not apply for the social-media snipers who targeted the McCanns
Sunday April 29 2012
It wasn't so long ago that a Panorama documentary on Madeleine's disappearance would have brought the anti-McCann lobby out in force. Instead the Kate and Gerry-baiters were relatively quiet all week, having perhaps found another grieving family to torment in the meantime, or another conspiracy theory with which to fill their time.
Or it could simply be that they're flummoxed by the latest developments in the case. As Panorama reported last week in the run-up to the fifth anniversary of the little girl's disappearance from a holiday complex in Praia da Luz, not only has a year-long Metropolitan Police investigation come down firmly on the theory that Madeleine was abducted by a stranger, it also claims to have good reason to believe she is still alive, even releasing an artist's digital impression of how she might look today, as she approaches her ninth birthday.
This wasn't the narrative which those convinced that the McCanns had something to do with their daughter's disappearance -- the ones who still post videos on YouTube full of cod psychological analyses of the couple's body language to a sinister musical accompaniment, or who leave messages on Twitter peppered with vile, unsubstantiated allegations -- had geared themselves up to expect. For now, no doubt, they remain bunkered in, regrouping, planning the next attack.
It shouldn't take them long. Portuguese police have already refused to reopen the case, dismissing as "mere speculation" claims from Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, who headed up the team of 28 detectives and seven civilian support staff, that their review of 40,000 pieces of evidence had turned up nearly 200 previously unexplored lines of inquiry, meaning that, in all likelihood, the case will remain in suspended animation, files gathering dust, Madeleine forgotten.
That's the atmosphere in which rumours flourish. Already there are mutterings about the stg£2m cost of the review of evidence, and insinuations of political interference, not least allegations that UK Prime Minister David Cameron was only pressurised into authorising a new inquiry by News International, thereby neatly segueing into another of the chattering classes' latest obsessions, that of the Leveson Inquiry. Panorama trawled through that cesspit, too. It shouldn't be too hard for the conspiracy theorists to use it all to come up with a new excuse to reignite the anti-McCann fuse.
Which is incredible, when you think about it. Five years on and the most thorough investigation of the evidence -- involving, in Det Chief Inspector Redwood's words, "turning every single piece of paper over and interpreting and analysing what is contained within them" -- has concluded that all those pulp fiction scenarios involving an unstable mother killing her own child and a controlling father disposing of the body, with both then colluding in an incredibly effective manipulation of an entire police force and the world media, were nothing but the poisonous fantasies which Madeleine's parents always said they were.
Yet the reaction has been so muted that it feels as if this is just another day at the office for the obsessives. Having invested so much time and emotional energy into demonising the McCanns, it's as if they're still reluctant to give up, much less apologise for the hurt that they caused to a family at its most vulnerable.
In a way, that's not so surprising. The campaign to indict the McCanns for the death of their own daughter was fought largely over the internet, where normal decencies rarely apply. Indeed, the plight of the McCanns could almost stand as a metaphor for the rise of social media as the predominant mode of public discourse.
There's a familiarity, even an intimacy, to online conversation which encourages strangers to feel that they have an investment in stories which actually belong to other people. Kate and Gerry were not only the ultimate victims of cyber bullying, but one of its original casualties too, tried and found guilty in the International Court of Twitter, itself only one year old and in its technological infancy when Madeleine went missing. Every gesture, every word, was magnified with an almost Truman Show-style intensity.
In truth, it seems highly unlikely that Madeleine will ever be found alive, regardless of last week's optimistic headlines. Most children abducted by strangers are killed within hours of being taken. There's also the fact that sniffer dogs detected the scent of death in the McCanns' holiday apartment, strongly suggesting that Madeleine may have died that very first night. Sniffer dogs are not 100 per cent reliable; the evidence of their noses only an indicator which needs to be confirmed by other means. But the bathetic title of last week's Panorama -- Madeleine: The Last Hope? -- said it all.
Until that question mark is removed from the story, there will always be room for the malicious to mislead casual observers into continuing to cast suspicion on the McCanns.
The only consolation for Madeleine's parents is that the growth of the internet has been so swift during the lifetime of their ordeal that the cyber bullies now have so many other victims to pick on that they must necessarily have less energy left over to hammer Kate and Gerry.
For those intent on attacking the media, though, there may be other lessons to learn. The then chief constable of Leicestershire Police, Matt Baggott, has already told the Leveson Inquiry into press standards in the UK that he knew at the time when Portuguese police officers were briefing against Kate and Gerry McCann that they were doing so on the basis of a misinterpretation of the DNA evidence, but decided that it was wiser not to put reporters right, even privately.
Baggott acted entirely as the high-minded media monks, shuddering with distaste at any whisper of secret contact between the ladies and gentlemen of the press and the appointed agents of the state, would wish him to act. But the result was that a family was put through hell unnecessarily. It can only be hoped that Leveson does not throw the baby out with the bathwater and end up making it harder than ever for journalists to do their job, just so that an artificial aura of purity can be maintained.

After spouting on and on about twitter, she suddenly writes about the dog scenting death. Perhaps the MM members had nodded off before that part. The journalist obviously knows nothing about cadaver odour and detection or she wouldn't have written what preceded it.

So she says the scent of death strongly suggest that Madeleine may have died. So, would the abductor have taken the dead child away in his arms and walked down the street with her?

For a bit of balance, an article by Eilis O'Hanlon written in the wake of Kate's book release last year:
The harrowing of Kate McCann The Irish Independent
Kate misses her chance to set the record straight in a book that adds little to an extensive canon, writes Eilis O'Hanlon
By Eilis O'Hanlon
Sunday May 22 2011
Madeleine
Kate McCann
Bantam Press, €22.99
Why Kate? From the moment that their daughter vanished from a rented holiday apartment in Portugal's Praia da Luz resort, it was Gerry McCann who provided the public face of the campaign to bring Madeleine home. He was the one who dealt with reporters, set up websites, wrote a regular blog updating the search. If anyone was going to write a book about that time, it was surely Gerry who would've been expected to do it.
But it was always Kate who fascinated observers. Mothers are expected to behave in certain ways and Madeleine's didn't seem to be playing her role properly. She was criticised for being too cold, for not showing her emotions more. The public can be cruel juries. They want their pound of flesh. Four years on, with the fate of Madeleine still unknown, Kate has now stepped forward to tell her own story -- though her motive for doing so remains typically obstinate.
She may have kept a journal throughout the search, so that the couple's twins, Sean and Amelie -- and Madeleine too, if and when she returned to the family -- would know what happened during those terrible days, but the only reason it is being released to a wider audience now is to fund the continuing search for a missing child. "We are now the only people looking for her," as Kate notes poignantly, and that takes money. Whether it makes for much of a book is the difficulty.
It's hard to review this book with any objectivity, especially when it is such an extraordinarily controlled piece of writing. In many ways, the book suffers from the same shortcomings which led to Kate being vilified so horribly in certain quarters. She's clearly an intensely private person, for whom opening up does not come easily. Too often, there is a sense in these pages of holding back. There are some highly intimate details, for example about how she needed therapy to overcome her "revulsion" at sex after the abduction, and she writes with piercing intensity of her feelings of guilt, but it is as though these passing details are masking what is otherwise a psychological absence at the heart of the book.
After an initial preamble about her life before the holiday, the book settles down into a pedestrian chronological account of the public events that followed, peppered with asides about how she felt at certain moments.
The Tapas Nine are shadowy figures throughout; we never really get a sense of who they are. Goncalo Amaral, the Portuguese police chief who became such a thorn in the couple's side, is a peripheral presence. The night Madeleine went missing -- on which everything hinges -- is dealt with in just a few pages. The exact state of the room, and the comings and goings of the various characters in the tale, remains frustratingly vague.
This was Kate's best chance to set the record straight, but the book adds little to an already extensive canon. Time and again, her response to allegations against them is simply to reiterate what they said in statements at the time. It certainly won't change anyone's mind. Supporters of the couple will focus on the passages describing her harrowing grief and sense of guilt. Those who are suspicious will find further fuel in the dismissive and perfunctory way in which Kate answers some of the most serious allegations laid against the couple. When specially trained cadaver dogs, for example, detect the scent of death in the family's apartment, Kate is quick to highlight the unreliability of sniffer dogs. It makes absolute sense insofar as they know they didn't do anything to harm their beloved daughter.
But as a parent, surely you'd be terrified by what the dogs sensed? The fact that a strong indication of death had been found at the scene immediately raises the likelihood that something terrible happened to your daughter in that room; but Kate and Gerry are almost militant in their belief that their daughter is not dead. "Madeleine is alive until someone proves otherwise," she still insists. Maybe that's the only way you can carry on -- Kate does admit to having terrible visions intermittently of her daughter being abused and killed -- but the response still feels unsatisfactory
Perhaps that's just repeating the original error of wanting more from Kate McCann than she is willing or able to give. All too often she writes like a spectator to events, not a participant. Therapeutically, that may be a common reaction in people who have undergone traumatic experiences, but it makes for a weirdly detached and uninvolving book. It's almost as if Madeleine isn't the only one who went missing that night, but Kate as well.

Why not? Someone must have. She was no longer in the appartment when the PJ sealed it off.

It is certainly quite possible that she was killed by an abductor and said abductor removed and subsequently hid her body - perhaps in fear of incriminating forensic evidence. However, given that the apartment would have needed a clean (given the areas that the two different dogs smelt blood AND cadaver scent) he/she would have needed a fair bit of time to do all that. A very risky business as he/she wouldn't have known when someone would pop into the apartment. This fact alone indicates to me that there is no realistic or likely scenario which ties in abduction AND the death scent.

Why not? Because cadaver scent takes around one to one and a half hours to develop, which means the abductor must have stayed in the apartment that long then taken her.

Re: Reference Madeline in Irish papers today ..
The satellite could have shown cars around the Praia da Luz, Mark Warner complex, revealing key movements in the hours before and after the supposed abduction on May 3rd 2007.
a change from Mr Mc...disappearance and supposed abduction. A shame images not handed to PJ but given our ties with US not surprised given to SY. Hope it reveals something.
Wonder why there is that type of satellite covering that area, probably to do with Gibraltar and entrance to the Med.

RD, I had wondered that too ,US top secret satellite spy cameras ! makes it sound so sinister , why this information was not looked into ? surely everyone in the US knew the story (Oprah etc) or are we to believe that someone has seen something in these and have now decided to hand them over , like everything this is weird.

Here is the full spy satellite story from 2009..........
SATELLITE CLUE TO MADDIE KIDNAP
Sunday October 18,2009
By James Murray
HOME Secretary Alan Johnson is prepared to ask US spy chiefs for satellite images which may show the face of Madeleine McCann’s kidnapper, following intervention by the Sunday Express.
Hope of new progress came after it emerged Leicestershire Police never made a formal request to the Home Office for views of Praia da Luz on Portugal’s Algarve at the time the little girl vanished in May 2007.
The quality of pictures taken by satellites in space is now so good they can reputedly identify the colour of someone’s eyes.
Last night a senior source with the Portuguese police said: “We know US spy satellites regularly sweep over Portugal looking at military installations and government facilities.
“So we thought they might actually have images of Praia da Luz on the day of the kidnapping and the preceding days.
“We hoped spy images may have captured the kidnapper watching the apartment prior to the event or even on the day itself. Obviously, having a picture would have speeded up the apprehension of the offender.”
Yet more than two years after Madeleine was snatched no help has been forthcoming, despite early requests from senior Portuguese detectives.
The Portuguese source explained: “This was fully discussed with Leicestershire Police and officials with the British Government.
“We were confident of getting progress because of Gordon Brown’s interest in the case and this apparent special relationship between Britain and the United States.
“Your ambassador to Portugal even visited our officers soon after the kidnap.
“The bad news for us is that we got nowhere with this avenue of inquiry, which was both frustrating and infuriating.”
For, despite all the talk, nothing appears to have been done officially with the British government and the formal requests were never made.
Last night a spokesman for Mr Johnson said extensive checks within the security intelligence community had failed to discover any formal request ever having come to them through Leicestershire Police from Portugal.
However, he said that if a request were now made Mr Johnson would see whether he could offer any assistance in trying to persuade the Americans to become co-operative.

Here's hoping May 3rd is not the only day images will be produced for.

Eilis O'Hanion certainly didnt believe Kate, but out of politeness, and perhaps a sense of libelous awareness, phrase her sentences very carefully.
Her piece is artfully crafted to give a neutral position, but discerning reader can read between the lines, and get the full sense that she is skeptical of the mccanns.

As for the satellites image, I wonder why it was denied to the Portuguese, but given now to the Yard.
Will the Yard now share/pass this on to the Oporto team? Let's wait and see.

Anyone else find it curious that most of the sceptical press articles come from Ireland and Scotland? You would think they would be McCann stronghold's!

I tried reading some of "Madeleine" on Amazon yesterday but couldn't get past a couple of paragraphs as it was so laboured.aiyoyo wrote:All too often she writes like a spectator to events, not a participant. Reading about someone's grandparents is interesting if relevant, it wasn't in that book, it was a filler. I did see in the preface I think, that she takes no notice of what is said about them by their detractors. About as convincing as GM saying he has no objection to theories. 9th+10th May 2012
As for KM missing as well. I find the 2007 Panorama where she's interviewed by her mate John Corner, highly disturbing, she looked to me as though she was "missing."
Why was she so animated? Her accent had grown thicker, eyes darting everywhere, head twisting. Why did J C film her in that state? If she'd been drinking for instance, why not postpone until the next day? It's as baffling as the airport video, but why?

Sorry to be racist but this is an Irish paper !russiandoll wrote: SNIP The spy cameras which can detect the number plate of a car from five miles up,

If you use google earth or maps.google, there is a point at which the satellite image changes into one taken from a light plane. Not a lot of people know that !
Re: Reference Madeline in Irish papers today ..
I agree with Aiyoyo that Eilis O'Hanlon's book review of madeleine is 'artfully crafted' and that the discerning reader can read between the lines.
However, this thoughtful and balanced review, makes it very hard to understand why she would have written such an unbalanced opinion piece in the same paper a year later. The Sunday Independent is not one of the papers sued by the McCanns. This journalist is clearly more than able to craft her work so as not to leave herself open to libel. So why has this experienced journalist (she is well known here) apparently changed her mind - I honestly have no idea.
An earlier poster thinks there has been better (ie balanced) coverage coming out of Ireland and Scotland. I'm not sure I agree. certainly its been worse in the Uk papers but I cant recall anything balanced in the mainstream media here, other than Eilis's book review which I didn't see at the time.

Death Toll in McCann Case
Gerry McCann called for an example to be made of 'trolls'. SKY reporter Martin Brunt doorstepped Brenda Leyland on 2 October 2014 after a 'Dossier' was handed in to Police by McCann supporters. She was then found dead in a Leicester hotel room two days later having, apparently, taken her own life. Brenda paid the price.
Ex-Deputy Chief Constable, Jim Gamble QPM congratulated SKY reporter Martin Brunt for doorstepping Brenda Leyland.
A Risky Gamble
Bloodied body of Kevin Halligen, who conned Maddie Fund of £583,00, is found dead at his Surrey mansion. Daily Mail
Ex-Met DCI Colin Sutton: "The most likely scenario is that Madeleine was stolen to order by slave traders and smuggled into Africa for a rich family who wanted a white child."
Ex-Met DCI Andy Redwood had a "revelation moment" on BBC1's Crimewatch on 14th October 2013 when he announced that Operation Grange had eliminated the Tanner sighting - which opened up the 'window' of opportunity' from 3 minutes to 45 minutes, in accordance with their remit, to allow the staged abduction to happen.
Former Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley made public on national TV that Operation Grange is a complete fraud.
