As far as I can see the original rumour only reached a handful of internet forums, and twitter. I have to admit I did wonder why it never made it to the news.

I don't understand how it can be criminal - if it was then it wouldn't be Murat bringing the complaint. That would be civil.

I must admit, I'm curious to know if it's true Murat suing Tanner, criminal or civil case, doesn't matter.
I have my doubts.

ETA @ Pascal : I don't understand why he didn't call Murat or Tanner him/herself to verify it.

He phoned Murat's solicitor who confirmed it. Mark William Thomas also confirmed it on Twitter. What more do you want?

I want to hear it from the man himself, that's what I personally want.

For two reasons:
firstly because so far this has been an affair carried out by blog, forum and Twitter;
secondly because the case(s) seem to me to be fraught with difficulty for Murat to prove, and in addition could bring up all kinds of information from the files which he might find embarassing, not least his own frequent changes of story about when, where and who.

The Mccanns have a good reason for undergoing the same embarassment, whether you believe them either innocent or guilty. I can't see the same overwhelming need for Robert Murat to subject himself to the same scrutiny.

MWT is a charlatan that has been shown u p many a time i believe. Was he not the ex police officer that claimed to have been involved in Soham, but was found not to have been? Why would a nobody have access to SECRET documents?

Snowy, what on earth do you mean 'the McCanns had good reason for undergoing the same embararassment'? It is so unjust that they have done their utmost to silence a man who has devoted nearly 3 years of his life in trying to find out what happened to the a little girl, left alone night after night alone and frightened.

Snr Amaral deserves a medal for what the McCanns have put him through. As Iv said before, too many know what happened for it to be kept a secret for ever.

According to local journalists in Lagos, Murats lawyer confirmed the case to " several UK based reporters ". The case is criminal and at an early stage.

Robert Murat is taking legal action against four of the McCanns' friends

BRITON Robert Murat, wrongly labelled a suspect in the Madeleine investigation, is taking legal action against four of the McCanns’ friends, it was revealed yesterday.

The estate agent has lodged a “criminal complaint” against Jane Tanner, 39, who claimed she saw a man carrying a child near the McCanns’ holiday apartment on the night Madeleine vanished.

A second complaint has been made against Ms Tanner’s partner, Dr Russell O’Brien, and Fiona Payne and Rachael Oldfield, also members of the so-called Tapas Seven.

It is understood that the complaints centre on allegations that the four gave evidence to Portuguese police which led to them making Mr Murat, 35, a suspect in the investigation.

The expat, who lived in Praia da Luz at the time, was found to have no involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.

Details of the allegations, lodged at a court in Lagos in the Algarve, are unclear because under Portuguese law the parties involved cannot discuss them.
