Fury as Frankie Boyle cracks 'joke' at expense of missing Madeleine McCann
Jan 10 2012 By Craig McDonald
COMEDIAN Frankie Boyle has sparked anger again by mocking the family of missing Madeleine McCann.
In an interview, Boyle said “there is no too far” in comedy before making a joke about the McCanns, whose daughter vanished on a family holiday to Portugal in 2007.
Boyle was asked if he was following the Leveson inquiry into press standards.
He said: “Yeah, I saw the McCanns on there and really wanted them to go, ‘Could you round it up in the next few minutes, mate? We’ve left the kids over in Starbucks’.
“Just to show they can still have a bit of a laugh.”
During a gig at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2010, Boyle said that some part of Gerry McCann must be pleased that Madeleine had gone “so he could use her room for a pool table”.
A Scottish Tory spokesman said yesterday: “Most right-thinking people will be appalled by these remarks.
“This is just the latest in a series of ill-judged comments from this particular comedian – a sure sign he is running out of anything genuinely funny to say.”

Re: Fury as Frankie Boyle cracks 'joke' at expense of missing Madeleine McCann
Well, I am a right thinking person, and I am far from appalled by these 'comments'.
Madeleine is in a better place and whatever Frankie Boyle may or may not say on the matter won't change the outcome for her.
It is doubly irritating that Kate and Gerry McCann have said far worse themselves about Madeleine! They 'admit' to leaving Madeleine in a foreign apartment even AFTER becoming 'aware' the children had cried the night before. The hypocrisy is priceless! Had the children actually been left in a Starbucks the outcome would've been better.
Please, Mr Politician, (he wasn't named, was he? Odd) don't presume to know what everybody finds funny.
I really think people need to get a life where humour is concerned, and I'm with Frankie on this. There should be no 'too far' with comedy. Its a good way of dealing with the darker things in life. As the great Dom Joly said 'Where do you draw the line? You could tell a joke about chicken crossing the road, and it would offend someone whose hen had just been run down'* (*para phrased)
Personally I think Frankie is just levelling the score. In the red corner, Dara O Briain for the McCanns. In the blue corner Frankie Boyle for all those intelligent enough to not be sucked in.
I know where my money is. Go Frankie...

The cynic in me says there's a possibilty that this is just another sick ploy to keep the 'long suffering Mccann's in the spotlight. Always the victims - bless em.
Afterall, Frankie Boyle & Gerry McCann (along with a few more 'famous' folk) did attend the same school - Holyrood

That is true Daisy, they did both attend Holyrood, but it doesn't necessarily follow that Frankie would be on Gerry's side. Remember, Frankie is a good four years younger than Gerry, so even IF their paths crossed, it could've been the case that Gerry was a prefect bully who flushed Frankie's head down a toilet this could be his revenge!Daisy wrote:The cynic in me says there's a possibilty that this is just another sick ploy to keep the 'long suffering Mccann's in the spotlight. Seriously though, I'd be surprised to find him a supporter, he's far too astute! Its odd, I don't know if it was one or two days before this all happened I was mentioning on here how my opinion of Dara O Briain had gone down the toilet since he 'came out' as pro-McCann... I said I'd be 'interested to hear Frankie Boyle's take on this affair - I'm sure it'd be somewhat different' and, lo and behold! Maybe he reads here? He could even be a member! Now that would be something...

PS - what is the guy's name who was at school with Gezza? The one who said Gezza's eyes were dead and 'cold - like a shark'? He's been mentioned on here a few times but I just can't remember...

So as to have a level playing field, although your name change is not derogatory as such, as was the other post, as I have asked on another thread for posters not to alter peoples names, so for the sake of fairness, I would be grateful if everyone did that, and then there can be no arguments, like "oh but he did it"

I think it was the owner of this blog - http://glasgowunihumanrights.blogspot.com/
There doesn't seem to be a search function so, without trawling through it all, I can't find the quote, but I'm pretty sure it's him and I see he has a link to Joana Morais's blog.

Gezza? That's a problem? Oh ok. I thought you meant my name, its been a long hard day No it wasn't derogatory. I always try to be respectful with names on here, eg I always address you 'candyfloss' not 'Candyfloss' or 'Candy'. I often have people reply to me as Rainbow, or RF etc etc. It bugs me a bit but I just try to lead by example :)candyfloss wrote:rainbow-fairy wrote:candyfloss, please don't think I'm being awkward, but I don't have a clue what you mean?candyfloss wrote:rainbow-fairy wrote:PS - what is the guy's name who was at school with Gezza? Gezza???????????
No, no offence meant by 'Gezza' and I don't see how any could be taken? I've always loved how PeterMac refers to Kate as 'Katey'... There are posters on here posting far worse things than a nickname!
I just don't get it. I'll go along with it though. Maybe I'll show the respect due by in future referring to him as his Holiness Dr Gerald McCann. Is that better?

I realise that you meant no offence rainbow-fairy and in fact Gezza is quite a friendly term The only reason I mentioned it was in the terms of another poster could say that you weren't using proper names, that's all.

I did see another poster earlier who repeatedly called one of the twins Emelie. Its one thing using a nickname, another altogether getting a name wrong completely. Now that is disrespectful...

Re: Fury as Frankie Boyle cracks 'joke' at expense of missing Madeleine McCann
With regard to Dara, he's on everything right now and he is already worth minllions, he knows exactly what he's saying and he's going along with the Establisment pro-McCann bias.
I have gone right off him now, hearing this, but he knows which side his bread is buttered on IMHO.
I'm with Frankie on this one, and if you think he's bad, have a listen to fellow Scot Gerry Sadowitz on the McCanns - IMHO he is an absolute genius, but will never ever again be on terrestrial TV.

Any chance of sharing? I'm seriously interested in how he can be so stupid. He's not, he's very sharp and quick witted. I can't believe he's pro-McCann, check this out, pretty impressive, national debating champ no less, theoretical physics...!
He attended University College, Dublin (U.C.D.), where he studied mathematics and theoretical physics. In 2008, he remarked: "I haven't written it into my act, but it occasionally comes through. I could come on with a chalkboard and say: 'Now you're all going to pay attention.'"[4] While a student there, he was both the auditor of the Literary and Historical Society (the university's oldest debating society) and the co-founder and co-editor of The University Observer college newspaper. In 1994, he won the Irish Times National Debating Championship and The Irish Times/Gael Linn National Irish language debating championship; he is fluent in Irish, and speaks to his father only in Irish.[5]

Advocatus, when I first read your post I didn't think I knew who Jerry Sadowitz was until I googled it (Wiki). Oh my - The Pallbearers Revue! That. Was. Amazing. Yeh it was '92, 5 episodes only, but by 'eck does it stick in the memory - fabulous. Yep Dara I'm afraid is off my list of DvD's to buy. I just don't get it because he actually is super-intelligent. Maybe he's on their payroll, too

LOL, I kinda remember it, was his one and only show I think. I remember seeing him on TV back in the day, and he was so FRESH, he was so quick, and he was using the F word like a virtuoso pianist might, if you know what I mean, but very soon he became too dangerous for lives shows, any live show, no matter how late! He has recently been gigging and I got hold of a 90 min live set, I have it somewhere on my PC, just heard the first 5 mins so far, and he is still on top form, better than ever, I'll try and get a link for it (it's probably on the link below). Regarding the McCanns, I seem to recall he was interviewed on radio when his tour started, talking about comedy limits, and he was basically saying this:
"Unlike most human beings, there is no subject Sadowitz will not make not light of and defile. The Haiti earthquake, for example, was mentioned in the first minute and cropped up a few times throughout the evening. Although he didn’t actually utter the words ‘I hate Haiti’, that, as always, was his gist. ‘They need food. I need a fucking iPod. That’s how it fucking works.’ And who but Jerry Sadowitz would dare open a set with a magic trick involving the persistently elusive Madeleine McCann? ("He does a joke about Our Maddie. It’s one he has adapted from a gag on the Queen Mother. A handkerchief is placed over his outstretched hand. The magician teases the hanky back to revaeal… Well, you insert your own joke here. It’s the way he tells it.")
You often hear people say, ‘there are some things you simply cannot make jokes about’. High up on this list are usually rape, paedophilia and natural disasters. Other people argue, however, that the darker and more unacceptable the subject matter, the more reason there is to make jokes. Indeed, it’s almost like we have a responsibility to make jokes, to laugh in the face of the unremitting odiousness of human existence. Laughter is a coping mechanism, and for a lot of people it’s absolutely essential."
He's not for everyone, but this site gives a brilliant intro to the man...

Here's a link to just one of the his articles: http://glasgowunihumanrights.blogspot.com/2011/05/glasgow-university-product-gerry-mccann.html
There are many more (including at least one other where he repeats the "eyes dead and cold like a shark" remark) and this writer seems to be well versed on all things McCann.
The University of Edinburgh is a little bigger than Glasgow's but I don't think there's much in it.
Isn't it odd, though, that we haven't heard from more school/college friends, former patients or colleagues of either couple?

Re: Fury as Frankie Boyle cracks 'joke' at expense of missing Madeleine McCann
Dara O Briain absolutely infuriated me too with his comments on McCann doubters. He called me a 'horrible person' but called others far worse, even using the C-word. I suppose I can understand some people who haven't read up on the case disagreeing with some comments but there was no need for the tirade from O Briain.
According to this:- http://gammagoblin.blogspot.com/2010/09/dara-o-briain-jokes-about-madeleine.html he once said "I will never do a joke about Madeleine McCann. I don't do jokes about dead children"
So maybe he doesn't quite toe the Team McCann line quite as much as we thought
Al Murray is another one who's been fairly disparaging about those who question the McCanns. So another one for the boycott list!! Won't be too hard for me mind you, as he's never really floated my boat.

zora-ann, I am with you on this one, Al Murray not for me either! I'm a bit of a 'Dave' nerd - Mock the Week, QI, Argumental, Have I Got News for You, Top Gear. But anything Al Murray? No. The Pub Landlord is just irritating 'beautiful British name' - aargh, but Compete for the Meat was just stupid. Yes you are right there was no need for Dara to be so nasty. There again, its a very Pro-McCann trait... Look at how they talk about Tony Bennett over on JATYK! I've only been to look once when I got a heads-up I'd been mentioned over there. Myself and Gillyspot were referred to as 'barking mad'. Well, you're nobody til JATYK slag you off so secretly I was pleased
Thank you by the way, that was the chap I was on about! I missed your first reply somehow, my update pushed me straight onto page 2. 'Like a shark' - that has always stuck in my head, though I think sharks are prettier than Gerry
Perhaps we haven't heard stories of the couple because they wouldn't 'be helpful'. Maybe they are all negative! The press won't print anything anti-McCann at present, but you can bet they've got 'Gerry was always evil even at school' type articles just waiting for the day those handcuffs come out...

Afterall, Frankie Boyle & Gerry McCann (along with a few more 'famous' folk) did attend the same school - Holyrood
Thanks for your response rainbow-fairy. I believe their paths crossed a lot more frequently than we'd imagined.
Not only did they attend the same school, both Gerry McCann & Frankie Boyle hailed from the Pollockshaws (the Shaws) tenement blocks of Glasgow. Eileen McCann still lives in the same area. Just another coincidence I guess.

I've never seen Compete for the Meat but I do remember Al Murray being on one of the early series of Hell's Kitchen, using his real name, which escapes me for the moment. I seem to remember him as a real wet blanket. To be fair, he did work hard and took it very seriously but there was something of the 'teacher's pet' about him and absolutely no humour.
I'd always quite liked O Briain and used to enjoy Mock The Week. I told my brother (who has always found him a tad smug) about our Twitter mini-spat and he was bizarrely rather impressed that I had had some sort of direct contact with him! Blokes, eh?!
You have to wonder how quiet these supporters will go when/if the truth comes out. And oh yes, I'm sure there will be a fair few journalists and editors who will relish the chance to let rip. Although they have to be outwardly supportive, many of them must know the kind of detail we do and possibly more and, as a result, must be privately scornful of the pair. IF it ever comes out and charges are brought I imagine they'd have to be very careful about what they print until after any legal proceedings are over.

Your brother was impressed that you had direct twitter-contact with Dara who then called you 'a horrible person' - charming! I don't know if it sounds petty, or silly, or spiteful, but my enjoyment of Mock the Week has really diminished since all this came out. As the 'head' of a satirical, establishment-teasing show, I don't expect him to turn round and lick the establishments bottom. Perhaps he should stick to star gazing with Brian Cox (I see that starts again this week)...

I don't think it sounds petty or siilly or spiteful, rainbow-fairy. I didn't watch the most recent series of Mock The Week or any of the re-runs on Dave since as I was too sickened by his attitude. I may watch again in future when I've calmed down about it but it has definitely changed my view on him a lot. I know we can't go falling out with everyone who believes the abduction line but it was the withering condescension and downright contempt he displayed towards the non-believers that really jarred with me. But as you pointed before, the nastiness seems to a common trait among some McCann supporters.

zora-ann, its so good to know I'm not alone in being so irritated by this... but you have absolutely hit the nail on the head with the bit in bold. It is that attitude which makes 99.9% of the Pro's so objectionable.zora-ann wrote:I don't think it sounds petty or silly or spiteful, rainbow-fairy. Right thinking people !!
A Scottish Tory spokesman said yesterday: “Most right-thinking people will be appalled by these remarks.
“This is just the latest in a series of ill-judged comments from this particular comedian – a sure sign he is running out of anything genuinely funny to say.”
This Tory spokesman what does he say about right thinking people leaving children alone ?
Mr Boyle is just telling a joke whereas leaving your children alone can have more dramatic results.
