On the night of Thursday 3rd May 2007, at approximately 9:10 pm, Jane Tanner claims to have witnessed a stranger walking at the top of the road, carrying a child who appeared to be wearing only pyjamas.  The stranger, according to Jane Tanner, didn't appear to be a tourist because of his style of dress and she was able to describe the stranger with a reasonable degree of detail considering the limited time he was visible, the poor visibility, and the distance between her and the stranger.

Despite claims of discretion by Jane Tanner, she didn't wish to add to her friends, the McCanns, distress by telling them of the sighting until the following day,  mysteriously the sighting was included in the timeline produced jointly by the group of friends, again on the night of 3rd/4th May 2007.  I'm not aware of any subsequent explanation as to this anomaly so I can only conclude that Gerry and Kate McCann were aware of this sighting within minutes/hours or were complicit with it's creation in order to add credence to the proposed abduction.

On with the evolution of Tannerman, Jane Tanner's sighting - there were any number of variations between the initial artist impression drawn-up in conjunction with Jane Tanner's witness statement and the final e-fit produced for public consumption, they can be left for another day.  So, here is the beginning..

Jane Tanner's description of the stranger during her witness statement taken on 4th May 2007

Personal description

Dark skinned individual, male sex, aged between 35-40, slim physical appearance, about 1.70m tall. Very dark, thick hair, longer at the back (she could only see him from behind). He was wearing linen type cloth trousers, beige to golden in colour, a "duffy" sic type jacket (but not that thick). His shoes were dark in colour, classic type. He had a hurried walk. He was carrying a child, who was lying on both his arms, in front of his chest. By the way he was dressed, he gave her the impression that he was not a tourist, because he was very "warmly dressed".

About the child whom appeared to be sleeping, she only saw her legs. The child appeared to be older than a baby. She was barefoot and was wearing what appeared to be cotton pyjamas of a light colour (possibly white or light pink). She is not certain, but has the impression a design on the pyjamas, possibly a floral pattern, but she is not certain.

Quite how this ^^^ transforms into Eggman I'm at a loss to understand but that aside - the conditions on the night Jane Tanner claims to have seen the potential abductor are on a par with this image.  Her level of recall under such conditions is quite remarkable, Eggman aside..
