Ohara Davies said it was "not fair" that search efforts for the Cardiff City striker ended after three days while millions of pounds have been spent searching for missing Madeleine

A boxer who questioned the decision to call off the search for footballer Emiliano Sala - but continue looking for Madeleine McCann - has been slammed on social media.
Controversial Ohara Davies claimed it's "not fair" that attempts to find the Cardiff City player were halted on Thursday.

It came after officials confirmed the search for Sala and pilot Dave Ibbotson had been called off after three days.

They were both on a light aircraft which disappeared on Monday evening while travelling from Cardiff to Nantes in France.

Davies' tweet last night has received a furious response online.

He wrote: "If you call of this search after only a few days, please answer this 1 question for us. Why was millions being pumped and still is being pumped into finding Madeline McCann 12 years after her disappearance? This is not fair."

Fans hit out at Davies, 26, with one writing: "Madeleine McCann didn't crash a plane into the English Channel in sub zero temperatures.

"She's a child who went missing and nobody knows why.
"It's a completely different thing."
Another branded him an "idiot".

But others shared messages of support, with one stating: "They have spent near £15 million on the search for Madeline McCann for 12 years but can’t spend 1% of that on a footballer worth £15 million. Strange."

Guernsey's harbour master Captain David Barker on Thursday confirmed the "difficult" decision to end the search, saying the chances of survival were "extremely remote".

The single-turbine engine Piper PA-46 Malibu left Nantes for Cardiff at 7.15pm on Monday, and after requesting to descend, lost contact with Jersey air traffic control.

The sister of Argentinian footballer Sala was left devastated by the news and begged rescue workers to keep looking for the missing plane.

Romina Sala, speaking in Spanish, was emotional as she told reporters in Cardiff that she believes her brother is still alive.

Cardiff City signed 28-year-old Sala for a record-breaking £15 million, and he was due to start training with his new club on Tuesday.

Mr Barker acknowledged that Sala's family were "not content" with the decision to stop searching for the plane, but said he was "absolutely confident" that UK coastguard protocols were followed and no more could be done.

"I can't begin to imagine how they must be feeling, but I do understand and I hope they will find some comfort from the fact that we are not closing this incident," Captain Barker said.

"Although we are stopping searching, the incident remains open and we are continuing with our broadcasts to ships and aircraft that are passing through the area and asking them to report anything that may be linked to the missing aircraft."

According to Mr Barker the plane's last known location was near Hurd's Deep, an underwater valley north-west of the Channel Islands, which could make recovery of a wreckage very difficult.

Mr Barker added that the adverse weather may have played a role in the crash, and said that WhatsApp recordings sent by Sala from the aircraft may be used in the investigation.
Cardiff City's owner Vincent Tan said: "Monday evening's news shook everyone at Cardiff City FC to the core.

"We were looking forward to providing Emiliano with the next step in his life and career. Those who met Emiliano described a good-natured and humble young man who was eager to impress in the Premier League.

"The response from the football community has been truly touching and we place on record our sincere thanks to those who have sent messages of support. We also thank everyone involved with the search and rescue operation, and continue to pray for Emiliano, David Ibbotson and their families."

His former club Nantes, along with many of its players, backed Ms Sala's calls for the search to resume, saying: "FC Nantes learned of the abandonment of searches for the missing plane. These can not stop.

"The Club and its supporters are demanding that the search for @ EmilianoSala1 continue, for his family and his family. Together, for Emi!"

Rescue teams have scanned around 1,700 square miles and examined mobile phone data and satellite imagery but found no trace of the aircraft.

Three planes and five helicopters racked up 80 hours combined flying time looking for the plane, working alongside two lifeboats and other passing ships.

Andrew Blackie, an accident investigation expert, who has flown on similar planes and journeys, said the missing aircraft would not have a black box recorder or parachutes.

Hundreds of children go missing every year in the UK.

They don't get Madeleine McCann scale funds either.

The issue isn't the lack of money spent on Sala, but the enormous unprecedented amount spent on Madeleine McCann.

What are they investigating at this stage?

Some people think that while the investigation is still open then public scrutiny is blocked.

The two cases aren't comparable at all. It would be more reasonable to compare with other missing child cases where a child, from the UK, has gone missing abroad.

There are obvious differences in these two cases but the bottom line is that two people are missing  through no fault of their own. The fact that Madeleine is a child or that Sala is a famous footballer worth millions shouldn't make a blind bit of difference.

The major differences here are that Sala is a young man, still missing, with no evidence yet to say that he is alive or dead.  He could very well be out there somewhere waiting to be rescued.

Madeleine, on the other hand, went missing over 11 years ago leaving substantial evidence to suggest that she had died in the apartment.

Why spend 11 years millions of pound  searching for a child for whom there is strong evidence that she died but call off the search for someone who could well be out there, after a few days?

Davies has a point, he has just put it badly.

You can't heap blame on anyone with a missing loved one making comparisons between their situation and the ridiculous unjustified attention given to just one missing child.

As you say Sharon, well over eleven years of dedicated attention.

It's not fair.
