Madeleine McCann news – Met chief Cressida Dick admits missing girl may never be found despite multimillion-pound search
Mark Hodge 25 June 2019
BRITAIN'S top cop Cressida Dick has admitted she doesn't know if the Madeleine McCann case will ever be solved.
The Metropolitan Police commissioner said it would be "fantastic" if detectives found Maddie - who vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal 12 years ago.
But Ms Dick admitted she did not know if the multi-million pound probe would be successful and said it could be "closed" if there were no more “active lines of inquiry”.
Speaking on LBC radio on Monday, she said: “We don’t give a running commentary on this case. We frequently speak to the Portuguese police team.
“We are still doing our work as best as we possibly can.”
LBC host Nick Ferrari asked: “Do you think it will ever be solved?".
She replied: “It would be fantastic if it was. I don’t know whether it will be.
“But we are carrying on. While there are still lines of inquiry we will of course continue with this.
“Once, or if, we get to a point where there are no longer active lines of inquiry then of course we will – as with all similar investigations – say, ‘Right, that one is now closed or dormant if you like.’
“If new information comes in we have it all ready to go to look at it again.’’
Portuguese police are perusing a “new clue and suspect” after talks with British officers, according to a bombshell local media report.
Correio da Manha newspaper claimed local detectives are now "nearer to knowing what happened to Madeleine”.
It comes after a tip-off over a mystery "foreign" man who was in the Algarve at the time of Maddie's disappearance in 2007.
Detectives from Scotland Yard recently met Policia Judiciaria (PJ) officers in Porto to share key information on the investigation.
A source in Portugal told The Mirror: "The British were here recently, there were talks at the PJ office in the city.
“It’s all very secret but then it always is with the Madeleine case.
"Only the police know who the suspect is.”
It's not clear if the suspect's whereabouts is known to detectives.
But the face-to-face meeting between British and Portuguese police is believed to be the first since the new suspect came to light.
It could be the biggest leap forward in the £12million investigation since Maddie vanished from her holiday flat at Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007.
The girl, then aged 3, is believed to have been snatched from her bed while her parents Kate and Gerry had dinner with friends just yards away.
The local probe into her suspected kidnapping was axed in 2008 and Scotland Yard launched Operation Grange in 2011.
Scotland Yard said their investigation is "ongoing".

Maddie hunt will NEVER stop until she’s found – UK top cop’s new pledge to McCanns
MADDIE McCann detectives will not give up the hunt even though cash is so tight more officers could lose their jobs, Britain's top police chief has said.
By Jerry Lawton / Published 20th December 2018
Metropolitan Police commissioner Cressida Dick said the controversial Operation Grange inquiry into the youngster's 2007 disappearance in Portugal will go on until it “has reached its conclusion”.
She revealed she was part of the team that set up the investigation eight years ago following a personal plea by Madeleine's doctor parents Kate and Gerry to then prime minister David Cameron.
Then an assistant commissioner in the Met, Dick said she had supported the move by the London-based force to launch a probe into the mystery even though it appeared to have no jurisdiction.
Madeleine vanished abroad and her family's home force in the UK was Leicestershire.
Since then Scotland Yard has spent nearly £12million of taxpayers' cash on the inquiry but no-one has been charged.
In November the Home Office granted the force an extra £150,000 to continue the probe until at least April next year.
The move sparked criticism from the Police Federation and some former Met officers who argued the money would be better spent tackling London's record number of homicides, knife crime and terrorism.
The commissioner said she understood their concerns but felt the Madeleine investigation was too important to shelve and she had set no time limit on it.
Dick said: “I was there when it was set up originally.
“I remember when this piece of work was started and why.
“I was an AC at the time.
“I can understand why some people may feel differently but I think it is quite right that we should continue until it has reached its conclusion.”
“I think it is quite right that we should continue until it has reached its conclusion”

Dick admitted the Met was still short of cash despite Home Secretary Sajid Javid last week pledging an extra £1bn to forces nationwide.
The commissioner said the Met could benefit from an extra £84m if London mayor Sadiq Khan chose to generate the maximum amount permissible via council tax rises.
But she admitted that may not be enough to save officers' jobs following years of cutbacks.
However she said that would not impact on Operation Grange.
“I am quite happy it should continue until we find out what happened or we have exhausted all possible lines of inquiry,” she said.
“It's not a huge amount of money and it's not large number of officers.''
Referring to the force's determination to trace and bring to justice the poisoners of Salisbury spy Sergie Skripal she added: ``We never give up in the Met.
“We never have.
“We never forget.”
The news will come as a massive boost to Madeleine's parents who earlier this year had feared it could shelved and they would have to fund private detectives to continue the search.
Then-three-year-old Madeleine vanished from the family's holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz 11 years ago while her parents dined with pals in a nearby tapas bar.
Portuguese police archived the case as `unsolved' in 2008.

They are now working alongside Met detectives in a bid to determine what happened.
Last month it was revealed both forces were probing if Madeleine had come to harm after walking out of the apartment in a bid to find her parents.
Until then the Met thought she either disturbed burglars or was abducted.
The McCanns continue to believe she was snatched from her bed by an intruder and may still be alive.
Ms Dick declined to discuss “operational details”.

When are we going to get someone who will end this farce?

Good question!
It is pathetic isn't it - so pathetic it's embarrassing.
I maintain the view that it's a deliberate act on the part of team McCann to get the audience in a froth (the long-term agenda?) - and it works every time. Whilst folk are concentrating all their attention on rubbish tabloid reports, they're not keeping their eye on the ball. Or the squirrel as PeterMac would say.
They have been doing this since the beginning of May 2007, aided and abetted by Clarence Mitchell and assorted associates.

Hi Verdi, but what happens, "If the UK, Squirrel's" are aware of each others plan and then divulge their message via friendly squirrel to Portugal PJ Squirrel?
The Portugal Squirrel, sent looking for the wrong type of "Nuts", in order to Bollox up, deliberately evidence they might have received on missing Madeleine McCann?
The next time the Metropolitan Police commander is available Not to give a "Running commentary", Miss Dick is asked about, Martin Grimes, Poilce Dogs Eddie, Keela on what they pointed to plus the Contaminated Blood Samples, Birmingham FSS, call me Stu Prior,John Lowe reports Not Portugal, UK Officers?
Its still a Cover UP involving UK Government but, Why the protection of the Lord and Lady of Rothley, Gordon and chums, a "Brotherhood"?

The Metropolitan Police and it's Operation Grange creation, are curiously evasive - one might even say quiet, on the subject of Martin Grimes and his wonder dogs, Eddie and Keela.
The initial Operation Grange remit was to coordinate and review all documentation relative to the case of Madeleine McCann's alleged disappearance.
By all appearances Operation Grange has chosen to ignore such important potential evidence.

Many people have never been found.
Several hundred thousand on the Western Front, and many more thousands in many places across the world.
They are nonetheless dead.

Hi Petermac, on 3/4 May 2007 One Male left Portugal for a connecting flight to Sweden?PeterMac wrote:Many people have never been found.

The same "Male" has stated he had Photographs of an alive Madeleine McCann playing with His Son's at Tapas Bar facilities, Thursday Afternoon?
The No "Running Commentary" Operation Grange, nor Leicestershire Police have confirmed it to be True?
A Mr Antony Bennett, tried to ascertain the verity of the facts put forward, the person Mr Bennett contacted politely refused to engage in provision of photographs etc?
Now wouldn't you think it was pertinent or relevant to investigate this information, that could conclude that Madeleine was "Alive" on 3 May 2007, at or around Tapas Bar,"High Tea", Miss Baker?
