the Ministério Público has formally accused Marcos Aragão Correio and António Dores (?) of defaming the Polícia Judicária when he accused them of torture. This is a result of the complaint filed by Gonçalo Amaral against the lawyer

According to the newspaper Correio da Manhã, the Ministério Público has formally accused Marcos Aragão Correio and António Dores (?) of defaming the Polícia Judicária when he accused them of torture. This is a result of the complaint filed by Gonçalo Amaral against the lawyer about a year ago. Finally this is seeing the light.

For those new to the subject of Marcos Aragão Correio, he is the lawyer who publicly searched the Arade Dam in January and March 2008 for Madeleine's remains, using money provided by Metodo 3 (although this wasn't revealed at first), and who pursued Gonçalo Amaral over the torture allegations concerning murderess and serial liar Leonor Cipriano.

When Gonçalo Amaral was convicted of filing a false report, he trumpeted 'target was hit', although in fact he failed in his attempts to convict any police officer for torture.

Some of you may recall that within 24 hours of us posting that very article, we got a screeching rant from Correio yelling 'defamation' and threatening us with libel action if we didn't take it down.

The 'pro's like Nessling, Winters and 'muratfan' and all their chums on sites like JATYK and PFA2 licked their lips in anticipation and said stupid things like: 'He's done it now, Marcos means business and won't let him off the hook'. Some of the PFA2-ites were positively ecstatic and actually spoke in terms of 'worshipping' Marcos. I kid you not - I have the screenshots to prove it.

Within 48 hours we sent him a reply to his ~~rant~~ e-mail asking him to state any fact in our article that he could demonstrate was incorrect, offering to correct it.

To this day, months later, he has never replied.

Therefore our article stands as fact.

There was nothing in our article that he could prove was in any way incorrect.

Tony I think Carolina's post about the suing of the PJ has been clarified by another poster on MM which reads thus

As I have access to the Correio da Manhã article, I wish to specify that the case does not concern Marcos Aragão Correia defaming the PJ, but rather defaming Gonçalo Amaral. This is an old complaint that GA filed ages ago and that appeared to have been forgotten while gathering dust in some drawer in the Public Ministry. Obviously, the case will be heard sometime in the future. However, when? That is anyone's guess.

I have been challenged by a regular PFA2 contributor in relation to my claim on this thread that some PFA2 members spoke of 'worshipping' Marcos Aragao Correia.

I concede that that actual word was not used.

However, I did save some of their more extravagant comments about him, and here they are.

The context in which they were written was immediately after Marcos Aragao Corriea threatened defamation action against The Madeleine Foundation for our article about him:

Correia is a hero to me & if taking on the fascists in PT hasn't fazed him, then a no-mark like bennett should be a breeze. Hope he does sue & hits him where bennet's heart really is ..& as you say .. it's in his wallet.

The biog of Correia is laughable. Born in 1975. Skip to 2000 replete with question mark after the date (I kid you not) as are the following 2 dates.

Bennett is a joke.

Dear me, I have never seen anyone so eager to get rid of their savings as Bennett - he already knows that Carter Ruck is after him for £50,000 if he breaks the agreement with the McCanns (which he routinely does), now it seems he wants to give the rest of it to Correia. Lawyer accused of defamation of the PJ

The Public Ministry accuses the lawyer Marcos Aragão Correia of the defamation of Gonçalo Amaral, ex-coordinator of the PJ, with a document which contains alleged acts of torture on Leonor Cipriano, who was sentenced, in 2005, to 16 years of prison for the death and concealment of the body of her daughter Joana.

The lawyer, who represented Leonor Cipriano, sent the above-mentioned document to the Association against Exclusion through Development (ACED) and António Dores, who is responsible for this association, is also accused of defamation. Further to the complaint against the lawyer, Gonçalo Amaral requested that Aragão Correia be considered "inimputable", suggesting his internment in a psychiatric hospital.

With regard to the alleged aggressions against Leonor, Gonçalo Amaral was given a suspended sentence of 18 months for "false testimony"*. The former PJ officer is represented by João Grade, the former lawyer of Cipriano.

* BTW The charge was not false testimony

I think I can improve on the translation of the above sentence. Here is my suggestion:

These comments are undeniably hero worship and one is sure that whomever wrote these posts must now be embarrassed at having written such sycophantic rot.
