Child rapist quizzed in Madeleine McCann disappearance died while serving sentence at Devon prison

A convicted child rapist, who was quizzed as a suspect over Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, died of natural causes while serving a 17-year prison sentence in Devon, a coroner has ruled.
Anthony Woodhouse, 69, who was jailed in 2008, was an inmate at Channings Wood Prison in Denbury, near Newton Abbot – where in 2014 he was interviewed by Scotland Yard detectives investigating the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann from a holiday apartment in Portugal

An inquest in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] on Tuesday heard that Birmingham-born Woodhouse died of natural causes at Torbay Hospital on March 1, having been admitted to hospital on February 21. There is a statutory requirement for the coroner to hold an inquest when someone has died while in the custody of the state.

Dr Ryan Miller from Torbay Hospital said in a statement that Woodhouse was admitted to hospital on February 21 with abdominal pain and rectal bleeding. The diagnosis was alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis. Dr Miller said: “He remained critically unwell but stable until the day of the death when his condition deteriorated. He died on March 1.”

Coroner Ian Arrow recorded the medical cause of death as gastric variceal haemorrhage, liver cirrhosis, alcohol dependent syndrome, and pneumonia.

Woodhouse spent more than 10 years on the run in Portugal after raping a 14-year-old girl, who became pregnant, in Hertfordshire in 1998. He was jailed for 17 years in 2008 after giving himself up to the British Embassy in Lisbon.

It has been claimed that detectives spoke to Woodhouse in March about a cleaning business he ran in the Algarve, close to where Madeleine McCann went missing from a holiday apartment in 2007, while her parents Kate and Gerry McCann were out having dinner.

Coroner Ian Arrow recorded a natural causes death. A representative from the prison attended the inquest. There were no members of his family present.

He must have become quite a novelty running around Portugal for 10 years.

A minor point - why did/do the UK police think a stranger paedophile abducted Madeleine? I thought that was the McCann line of defence. Unless of course Operation Grange is still focusing on the dead paedophile bungling burglar with a get-away tractor scenario.

The evidence however, strongly indicates that Madeleine died in or around apartment, 5 Ocean Club, Praia da Luz, or has the Metropolitan Police conveniently forgotten. Dogs don't lie, humans on the other hand are quite adept at the art when it suits the occasion, ask Kate McCann - she knows! By her own admission, she and her hubby told little porkies when super dogs Eddie and Keela arrived on the scene. Tell us Mr and Mrs McCann - what other little porkies did you tell to save your bacon?

It's ridiculous because raping a 14 year old - probably pubescent - girl (and I'm not saying that isn't serious), is a completely different crime fingerprint to housebreaking and abducting a 3 year old girl (without leaving a smidgen of evidence).

Whoever came up with this "lead" is a moron.

Hi Bluebag,just to confirm that the Metropolitan Police service in 2008,had consulted Interpol over the possibility of a Paedophile gang operating in Europe/ Portugal? The Metropolitan Police Service confirmed that they had found No connections to a Paedophile gang being responsible for Madeleine' disappearance,but you know anything is possible with regard to Scotland Yard Operations(The Worlds Best Police Force)?

Who are the Tapas witnesses,Simon,the Not suspects group,friends of the Parents of Madeleine,pact of silence?
Whilst DCI Andy Redwood has Bungling burglars operating 30 Km away as Prime suspects?
Yet,a certain"Freud"character had lived their for years,even inviting a couple whose daughter had disappeared from her Holiday apartment,about 1/2 Mile away from this persons residence,but no connections to anything you understand,just easing the couples mind of their daughters disappearance?

Clearly, no allowances were made by Grange of the Yard, for any errant paedophile passing through Portugal before, during and after the year 2007 - en-route for Thailand, or some such far away destination.

First rule of policing - start with the core and then work outwards. Peeling an onion, the reverse principal, is food for psychology not policing.

Ex-DCI Redwood once declared his intention to start at the very beginning, leaving no stone unturned - but he, nor his successors, did that did they? If any attempt was made, they conveniently left out the important evidence and intelligence..
