Suranne Jones will play the mother of an abducted ten-year-old girl in a stage drama with chilling similarities to the Madeleine McCann and Milly Dowler cases.

The actress, who has won awards for TV hit Doctor Foster, will play Nancy, a grieving mother whose daughter has gone missing, in a revival of Bryony Lavery’s acclaimed 1998 play Frozen, which will run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from February 9.

Jonathan Munby will direct, and told me he had suggested Jones should read Madeleine, Kate McCann’s account of her daughter’s disappearance ten years ago, and My Sister Milly, Gemma Dowler’s recently released book about her sister’s kidnap and murder 15 years ago.

The actress (back on BBC1 in Series 2 of Doctor Foster next week) has an 18-month-old son, and Munby said she felt an ‘immediate connection’ when she read the script for Frozen. ‘I think she’s taking it on with some trepidation, too,’ the director added.

‘She’s aware of the emotional journey she’ll need to go on and dark places she has to tap into.’

When I asked if Jones would meet McCann and Dowler family members, Munby was cautious in his reply. ‘There are possibilities,’ he said. ‘There are people who have experience of what these characters have gone through. We want to do them justice, and tell the story accurately.’

They have chosen the right leading lady: Jones’s ability to convey empathy is one of the secrets of her success.

I've just sent a tweet to Jonathan Munby with a link asking him to read PeterMac's e-book, you know just for the sake of "justice and accuracy" which Suranne won't get just by reading Kate's bewk 'madeleine'.

I think Suranne Jones should read Madeleine. Rather like this play, it's a terrific work of fiction.

Having now read the book, IMO the only thing Suranne Jones will be able to take away from it is a sense of anger at being suspected. That was the only emotion that shone through in the book for me. I didn't get a sense of what Madeleine was like, or a sense of her relationship with her parents, or even a sense of what it is like to lose your child. If the character she's playing is not suspected of any wrongdoing, she'll be disappointed when she reads the book.

If this drama is about a missing ten year old, then perhaps Suranne Jones is best reading about Milly Dowler AND Sarah Payne and not an account of a mother of a "missing" three year old.... unless of course it's about setting up a fund, duping the public and the Government plays lead roles?

The book is a gift to a cross-examining prosecutor, should that ever happen.

Does she realise that to play this role , she'll have to tell the media how she " couldn't make love to her husband " and how she muttered " Fu....g tosser " under her breath while being interviewed by the police , also be prepared to have bruising on her wrists and arms from punching walls , railings and breaking beds !
It's going to be a tough role Suranne , you'll have a lot to live up to ! big grin

Bored already and that's before I have watched it. Oh hang on a sec. wont be watching it as I can already guess what it will be like. Oh and Jones will probably end up winning every Award for her magnificent portrayal. YEAH, YEAH.
