Authorities about to close the case review, that has already lasted for six years and has cost almost 15 million, due to the lack of results.
By António Soares, Marisa Rodrigues and Oscar Queirós
Ten years after “Maddie“ McCann has disappeared, on the 3rd of May 2007, from the tourist resort in Praia da Luz, in Lagos, where she was on holidays with her parents, nothing is known about her fate, despite the “significant” leads always announced when an important date for the case approaches. The Scotland Yard, that pledged to solve the case swiftly when, six years ago, initiated the odyssey of reviewing the whole process that resulted from the Portuguese Judiciary Police investigation, has reduced the number of people handling the case from over 30 to less than a handful of people that are now assigned to the case. After spending close to 15 million Euro in six years, it was given a further one hundred thousand Euro to finalise its investigation over the next few months. There are few who believe it possible, but the parents maintain the hope that they will find the daughter who they have not seen since she was 3 years old.
The British police, in the only line followed based in the abduction scenario and of which they have not provided details, has insisted in connecting the suspects through phone calls that they would have made to each other on that night and the ensuing hours. Jornal de Notícias knows that the PJ has a database with all the telephone numbers and calls that were made. In that vast list, there is detailed information of the various Telecom operators in Portugal and even phone booths. The entire phone calls have been cross-referenced and their callers investigated. The detectives concluded that there was no evidence that they could be involved in the disappearance. The lead of the mysterious woman that has been advanced in the last few days in the UK, as others that have surfaced around significant dates of the case, are not taken as credible by the authorities here or there.
On specific occasions, the dialogue between the British Police and the team of the Judiciary Police from Porto that is still investigating the case, has brought the Portuguese inspectors to the Algarve or even abroad, activities that have invariably led them to dead-ends, despite the British media perpetual talk about the existence of a “significant” lead.
In an interview given to the BBC and broadcast on Sunday, Kate and Gerry McCann stated that they maintain alive the “hope” of finding their daughter, due to the “inexistence of any evidence” that allows them to “clearly ” conclude that her death occurred and the guarantee of the authorities that the “investigation goes on”. “ Not as quickly as we wish “, they regret. About their family life without Maddie – the couple has another two children, twins –, Kate states that they have “returned” in the last few years to “something close to a normal life”. For the couple, this date, the 10th anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance, denotes a “horrible mark of stolen time”, they stressed.
A decade afterwards, the reports of sightings and the leads continue to arrive to the authorities. The most recent is from a former Norwegian policeman who guarantees that he knows where Madeleine’s body is buried. However, he will only reveal the place if the Judiciary police accompany him. A “blackmail” to which the detectives did not give in to, because the report has no credibility. Just like the roughly six thousand reports that were received by the investigation and led to dead ends.

What of their six months stay of execution granted in March 2017 + another 85,000 quid?
Still, on death row I guess it matters not when the guillotine is dropped..

Is Jane Tanner the "woman in purple"? Jenny Murat and Jeremy Wilkins stated that she was seen around 8:00-8:30 on the night of 3 May
Gerry McCann and Jeremy Wilkins contradicted Jane Tanner's story, when she said she passed them on her way to do her check
Andy Redwood, on Crime Watch, again, discredited her statement, that she saw a man carrying a child.
Does Jane Tanner hold the key unlocking this case?
