MCCANN'S MEDICS
Madeleine McCann’s dad Gerry led team of top heart doctors to save life of ex England footballer
By Tracey Kandohla
A TEAM of top heart doctors led by Madeleine McCann’s dad has saved the life of a former England footballer after he suffered a cardiac arrest and “died” for seven minutes.
Leicester City legend and club ambassador Alan Birchenall, 71, has praised Gerry McCann and his colleagues, admitting: “I’m lucky. They saved my life.”
Speaking for the first time about his ordeal he said: “These people are unbelievable. I’ll be forever grateful to them.”
Professor McCann, as he is now titled, prides himself on having “established a national and growing international reputation as an expert in Cardiac MRI (magnetic reasoning imaging)” – or scanning.
His work has been winning critical acclaim as he and ex-GP wife Kate continue the global hunt to find daughter Maddie, who disappeared nearly 10 years ago from a Portuguese holiday apartment.
As the renowned cardiologist helps save patients’ lives, by cruel irony, he has no idea if his own child who vanished aged three is dead or alive.
Alan, nicknamed “The Birch,” was brought back to life after collapsing during a recent sports awards ceremony.
The former player was resuscitated on stage, where he had been making a presentation, by three medics who were among the crowd.
He was later treated at Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital where Maddie’s dad is a consultant cardiologist and a professor of cardiac imagery.
He was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a small device which treat patients with dangerously abnormal heart rhythms.
It is not known if Gerry, 48, who co-incidentally lives in the same village as The Birch in Rothley, Leicestershire, carried out the hour-long operation but he was on hand to advise.
Reliving the horror seven weeks ago, Alan recalled: “I just remember saying ‘I don’t feel well’ and then I felt my legs going and that was it.”
He told how the use of a defibrillator at the scene saved him.
He has previously helped raise funds for the use of the lifesaving equipment in Leicester schools and public places, along with Gerry’s heart specialist colleague Doug Skehan.
He said: “They had four attempts with it before my heart started again. I thought I was a goner!
“I owe my life to a defibrillator and the people at Glenfield Hospital. Every day is unreal because the Birch was gone – it changed my life.”
Dr Skehan added: “Alan’s had so many message of support. He is overjoyed by the response.”
Alan had been on official club duty at the ceremony, which was postponed.
Birchenall, who hails from London’s East End, spent the majority of his career in the 1960’s and 1970’s at Leicester.
He was awarded an MBE for his charity work in 2002 and seven years later was given the Freedom of Leicester.
Renowned doc Gerry McCann, whose research work on “better understanding of cardiovascular disease” has been published in one of the world’s leading cardiology journals.
The Sun newspaper launched a campaign calling for all school kids to be taught basic life-saving skills.
A host of stars led by tennis hero Andy Murray have joined the Love Heart in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation.

This actually happened two months ago so it's a bit odd that Prof Gerry wasn't wheeled out before the Sun back then - but maybe that's because Prof Gerry wasn't mentioned in this article

"And his doctor confirmed that the use of a defibrillator saved his life – having previously helped raise funds for the use of the lifesaving equipment in 20 Leicestershire schools".

THAT is what saved his life. Many communities now have these devices and volunteers are on call on certain days of the week/month, and they will attend an emergency where someone in their community is suspected of having a heart attack. We call these people "First Responders" and they have been given the appropriate training to use these defibrillators, AND these volunteers are the unsung heroes of society, but we NEVER hear about the lives they save each year.

Now, who was that man Gerry helped on the plane in 2007? Or the drunk they helped carry home one night on their way back to PdL?

This is getting ridiculous. Of course Gerry McCann "saves lives" THAT IS HIS JOB, and he gets paid handsomely for doing that job. Are we, now, expected to worship at the feet of these people and NEVER question any wrong-doing that they MAY be responsible for, just because they hold a well-paying position??suzyjohnson wrote:Now, who was that man Gerry helped on the plane in 2007? So Mr and his team saved this man's life.
In other words he did the job he is being paid to do.
Big Deal.

He told how the use of a defibrillator 'at the scene' saved him.

".....resuscitated on stage..........by three medics who were among the crowd."
NONE of 'which' was.... McCan't!
Surely, even McCan't hasn't 'stooped so low' as to be 'claiming' the 'credit' for 'work done', possibly, ONLY by his 'colleagues'?
It is not known if Gerry, 48, who co-incidentally lives in the same village as The Birch in Rothley, Leicestershire, carried out the hour-long operation but he was on hand to 'advise'
Would the 'patient' have 'died' IF GM 'hadn't been there'?
I think not!

So McCann wasn't there when he had the heart attack on stage, and he wasn't directly involved in the surgery afterwards, only in an 'advisory' capacity. Wonder how his colleagues feel about this appropriation?

Whilst being waited on and fawned over by Tracey as she composed yet Another sickenly sycophantic ( that's hard to say ) article about the godlike Professor ( excuse me while I run for a bucket ) .
She really is earning her pennies isn't she .
What's next on her list
Cardiologist to the Royal family ?
Honours list ?
Parliament ?
Come on Tracey we're waiting

Re: Out of all the doctors in the UK who save lives.....step forward once again, Prime Suspect Professor Gerry McCann
It most certainly IS known that Gerry did not "assist in the hour-long operation" . He is not a surgeon! He has not completed the relevant surgical training to become an F.R.C.S. he is a cardiac diagnostician. In other words he interprets E.C.G.s, echo-cardiograms, cardiac scans, monitors blood pressure etc. The only life-saving his job description lends itself too is spotting cardiac abnormalities through these tests and referring the patient, in a timely fashion, for appropriate treatment, be that to the a dietician or a surgeon, depending on urgency. I am honestly beginning to wonder if another "Lord Bell - half a million for a year on the front pages" is going on! Scarcely a day passes without another McCann non-story, despite the comments in the Sun/Mail clearly showing that readers are sick of it. Has money changed hands again???

This Kandohla woman needs to be struck off - how does she get away with it year after year?
Surgeons save lives every hour of every day of every week of every month of every year. Why are the populace expected to go into raptures because a surgeon is doing his highly paid job?
Besides, the Prof is a consultant - a stuff strutter, he's not a lone comic book hero, not a surgeon. Porters > admin > nurses > auxillaries > paramedics > junior doctors > registrars > surgeons > consultants they all play a part in saving a life.
It's team work from top to bottom - just like CMoMM. Don't big him up!

Leicester City legend Alan Birchenall saved by nurse
14 January 2017

Lisa Fereday was at the ceremony as her daughter had been nominated for an award
A nurse has described how it took four shocks with a defibrillator to revive Leicester City legend Alan Birchenall after he collapsed on stage.
"The Birch", 71, was at the Leicester Mercury Sports Awards when he suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday evening.
Lisa Fereday, who was attending as her daughter was nominated, said Mr Birchenall's first words were, "Wow, what just happened?".
His charity work has included putting defibrillators in public places.
Ms Fereday went to help after Mr Birchenall collapsed while presenting awards.
She said: "I started chest compressions and asked for the automatic defib to be brought to me as soon as possible and someone ran for that.
"When it came I attached that and was able to deliver a shock for his arrhythmia which was pivotal in saving his life.
"After the fourth shock he came back round and was breathing for himself again and the first thing he said to me was, 'Wow, what just happened then?'."
Alan Birchenall holds up the Premier League trophy after Leicester City won the title last season
Dr Douglas Skehan said: "He has had so many messages of support I have warned him not to respond to too many - but he is overjoyed by the response."
Mr Birchenall is in a stable condition and is expected to have an operation this weekend but is due to be out of hospital within days.
