How very true, royalty throughout the ages were/are renowned for rearing misfits by the way of children, because of the appalling way they were ill-treated. Or locking them away from sight and mind if they had some form of disability, mental or physical.

I don't credit Kate McCann with anything close to intellect, at least she doesn't demonstrate such a natural gift but she certainly is devoid of anything that could be likened to emotional instinct. Her numerous appearances before the camera are testament to her peculiar temperament - or inability to even act like a normal rational human being.

As for Gerry McCann eating himself, what can you say but !

" My sweetheart , my darling ,  my love , my companion " 

Who refers to their 3 year old as " my companion " ? 

This sounds more like speaking of an adult , a lover , partner , husband , not a small child , your little one , baby girl .

Kate always seems to me at least to be trying to find the right words to portray emotions that she is clearly lacking , she fails abysmally every time ! 

She wonders why people find her cold and disconnected from her daughter and from the unconditional love that the majority have when they become a parent . Her words reveal that lack of emotional connection every time she speaks of Madeleine .

As for Gerry eating himself if he was chocolate ! Thanks , I used to love chocolate , now ? That bar sitting in the fridge may be there for sometime !

The police file of the investigation into disappearance of Madeleine McCann was leaked online today.

A 57-page report dated June 20, 2008 and written by an Algarve-based inspector with the Policia Judiciaria was placed on the website of the well-regarded Portuguese newspaper Expresso today.

The apparent leak comes just a day after the McCanns were cleared of any involvement in their daughter's disappearance.

The couple's spokesman Clarence Mitchell criticised the leaking of the document.

He said: 'As always we simply will not comment on anything that appears to be from the usual anonymous sources.

'If any elements of the police report are being placed online, that would not only be wrong, you have to ask yourself who is behind it and why.

'Gerry and Kate's lawyers in Portugal will be applying formally for access to the complete file and they will be analysing everything in it in their own time without making elements public at this stage."

Earlier it was revealed that the McCanns may sue the Portuguese police over the bungled investigation into the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine.

As their relief at having their 'arguido' status revoked turned to anger, the McCanns have said that have not ruled out initiating legal proceedings.

The couple's spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said: 'By the end of this week, lawyers will have complete access to everything.

'They will have 20 days to assess the work of the police and what has been done and what hasn't been done. If they feel legal action is necessary, we could press charges.'

He added: 'It's going to be a long, slow process, both for the lawyers in examining the volumes and for Kate and Gerry to be informed of their contents and whether there's any need for legal redress.

'The priority has always been finding Madeleine so the investigative work is first and foremost.

'If there are any leads from the files, for instance new sightings, that's what the private investigators will focus on in the first instance.

'The question of legal action remains an option but that is not the priority right now. It is something Kate and Gerry will take advice on from the British and Portuguese lawyers.'

Mr McCann, speaking last night after he and his wife were cleared, also did not rule out taking legal action, although he said it would come second to finding Madeleine.

'We don't have any immediate plans to return to Portugal at the moment. Obviously we want to digest the statement and also to get access to the files to see what can still be done,' he said.

The couple's lawyers have already started the legal process to get their hands on the full police files into the fruitless investigation.

They are said to be using international investigators including Spanish-based agency Metodo 3 and British-based private detectives.

Their Portuguese lawyer Carlos Pinto de Abreu was lodging an application for access to the files today and they are expected to be released by the end of the week.

The McCanns will then have 20 days to appeal against the Portuguese attorney general's decision to drop the case, although this is unlikely.

Mrs McCann, struggling to keep her emotions in check, spoke of the terrible effect the police decision to make them 'arguidos' has had on them and the search for Madeleine.

Trembling and clutching a child's pink rucksack with her daughter's favourite toy Cuddle Cat inside, she said:
'It is hard to describe how utterly despairing it was for us to be named as arguidos and subsequently portrayed in the media as suspects in our own daughter's abduction and worse.

'It has been equally devastating to witness the detrimental effect this status has had in the search for Madeleine.'

The couple fear that potential witnesses who might have come forward with vital information were deterred when they were named arguidos in September.

They held a brief news conference at a hotel near their home after Portuguese officials admitted they had found no evidence against them, lifted the suspect status and announced they were shelving the investigation.

Since being made arguidos - official suspects - ten agonising months ago, the McCanns have not commented on the state of the investigation or aired their views about the police because they were gagged by Portugal's strict judicial secrecy laws.

As her husband clutched her hand tightly for support, Mrs McCann, looking pale and close to tears, added: 'We can assure you we will never give up our search for Madeleine.'

Their official spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the couple had been 'wrongly accused' and 'now the world will see that they (the Portuguese police) were wrong.'

They said that while they welcomed the lifting of the arguido status and the Portuguese attorney general's admission that police had failed to find any evidence that they had committed any crime, it was 'not a cause for celebration'.

Glasgow-born Mr McCann and his wife, both 40, had not ruled taking legal action against the Portuguese authorities for the way they have been treated.

They said they hope that now their lawyers are allowed access to the police file, it will give them new leads in their private investigators' search for Madeleine, who went missing just before her fourth birthday in May last year.

Mrs McCann said: 'We are looking forward to scrutinising the police files to see what has actually been done and more importantly to see what can still be done as we leave no stone unturned in our search for our little girl.'

The files are believed to include thousands of leads, hundreds of witness statements and alleged DNA links between missing Madeleine and her parents. They also contain the supposed evidence for making them suspects.

The couple have fought long and hard to gain access to the masses of information. Earlier this month they won a legal battle against Leicestershire Police for access to 81 pieces of information.

The news that they will now be able to look at the complete set of police files came as an unexpected bonus to the couple, friends say.

Attorney general Jose Cunha Pinto Monteiro's announcement yesterday raised immediate questions about why the McCanns were forced to endure months under the cloud of suspicion, and to live with the constant threat that they could face charges over the disappearance.

Yesterday it was claimed that forensic evidence which led to the McCanns being named as suspects could have been misunderstood by Portuguese police.

Detectives wrongly believed the evidence supported their theory that Madeleine had died in her parents' rented holiday apartment when in fact the DNA analysis was inconclusive, it was suggested.

Mr Monteiro was careful to highlight the fact that the McCanns and fellow arguido Robert Murat were no longer under suspicion of any crime.

There had been widespread speculation that the couple might have faced child neglect charges over their decision to leave their three youngsters alone in their rented holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, while they had dinner with friends at a tapas bar nearby.

The attorney general said: 'The investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been archived as no evidence was discovered of any crime committed by the arguidos.

'Hereby the condition of arguido of Robert James Queriol Eveleigh Murat, Gerald Patrick McCann and Kate Marie Healy ceases, and the bail measures imposed upon them have expired.'

He said the case could be reopened if fresh evidence is uncovered, and said the McCanns' legal team and Mr Murat's lawyers would be allowed to see the case files once a few legal formalities had been completed.

Mr Monteiro's long-awaited decision to shelve the 15-month police investigation came as a huge relief to the McCanns, but their spokesman said there could be no sense of jubilation while their daughter was still missing.

'They welcome this news but the whole thing has been an unnecessary distraction since September,' said Mr Mitchell.

'The main thing now is to get everything back to finding Madeleine. The only thing they care about is finding Madeleine.

'We hope that the Portuguese authorities will continue to co-operate with their private investigation.'

No crime: Ex-pat Robert Murat, the first official suspect, has also been cleared

Robert Murat told of his relief yesterday as he was formally cleared as a suspect.

The Briton, who lived near the flat where Madeleine disappeared, spent almost 15 months as an arguido after he was questioned on May 14 last year.

Mr Murat, 34, said he wanted to rebuild his life as a property consultant in the Algarve.

Asked if he was still in shock, he said: 'I think if you spend 15 months under a cloud of suspicion none of this feels entirely real.'

He told Sky News: 'There's a little girl still missing out there, so it's a time for relief but not for celebration.

'I hope in the future something comes out that proves that I had nothing to do with this. I do hope they keep on investigating and they find out what happened.'

Goncalo Amaral insists naming the McCanns as suspects was not persecution by Portuguese police

The former head of the Madeleine police investigation yesterday told why he still believes she is dead.

Goncalo Amaral said all the evidence suggested she had died inside her parents' rented holiday apartment on May 3 last year - the night of her disappearance.

Mr Amaral, who is publishing a book about the case on Thursday, denied he had led a 'persecution' against Kate and Gerry McCann.

He told the BBC: 'The evidence that we had gathered by the time that I left the case pointed to the girl being dead - and having died inside the apartment.

'I don't know what happened next. I can't say. We'll have to wait for the case files to be made public.'

Mr Amaral led the police investigation but was removed from the case in October after he accused British police of checking only leads which helped the McCanns.

He was widely criticised for focusing solely on the theory that Madeleine died in her parents' care and that they disposed of her body to cover up her accidental death.

But he insisted he was not acting alone when he decided to name them as suspects.

'In this case, it wasn't purely and simply a decision taken by police officers - Portuguese and British police. There were others involved.

'There was no persecution. The police don't want to persecute anyone, just to investigate what happened in a given case.'

Mr Amaral said that he retired recently because he wanted to be

able to speak freely. He denied he was seeking to profit from Madeleine's disappearance by publishing his 224-page book, The Truth of the Lie.

'People can say what they like,' he said. 'I'm trying to contribute to the discovery of the truth.

'I worked 27 years as a police officer - and my conscience can't accept that this is the first case that slipped through my fingers.'

Friends of the McCanns have warned that their legal team will study the book and have not ruled out bringing libel proceedings against Mr Amaral.

He is also facing a perjury trial over claims that he helped to cover up the alleged torture of the mother of another missing girl in the Algarve by some of his officers.

The outgoing chief of Britain's child protection agency and the host of US TV show America's Most Wanted posed as paedophiles to investigate the sex trafficking of Cambodian youngsters.

Jim Gamble, ex-chief executive of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop), and John Walsh said they were shocked when they went into a Cambodian bar where there were 50 to 60 girls.

Mr Walsh said: "Within two minutes a madam came up to us and said, 'What are you looking for?' and Mr Gamble said: 'We're looking for young girls.' She brought over three or four girls that were (about) 12 or 13 years old - very, very young."

Mr Gamble told her they wanted younger girls, Mr Walsh said. He said the woman replied: "What do you want? We have six and seven-year-old boys and girls. I can arrange that off premises."

Mr Walsh said the experience was "disgusting and heartbreaking".

He said Western paedophiles from the US, Britain and Germany travelled east to Cambodia as international sex tourists.

He said his show chose Cambodia because it is cheap to buy a sex slave there.

"I saw many Western men that had come there not to go to the Buddhist temples, not to come there to look at the beaches, not to do anything at all but to molest and have sex with children. It's wrong, it's illegal and it has to change," Mr Walsh said.

He said the episode would be a "tough show to watch, but it is important to expose the reality that children are sexually assaulted by predators.

Fears Madeleine McCann was 'snatched for rich family' after reports of Morocco sightings

Madeleine McCann may have been abducted by slave traders and sold to a rich family, a former policeman has claimed, amid reports of a possible sighting.

Almost 10 years after the three-year-old girl vanished while the family were on holiday in Portugal, private detectives hired by the McCanns reportedly believe she may have been smuggled by ferry into Africa.

Gangs in Mauritania, West Africa, are known to sell youngsters to wealthy Middle Eastern families.

Colin Sutton, a former Scotland Yard detective, told the Mirror: “The Mauritania line is certainly a possibility and needs to be looked at.

“If someone wanted to get a three-year-old child into Africa it’s the obvious route. The infrastructure and contacts for people smuggling are clearly there.”

Private detectives reportedly believe she was snatched and taken to the country via Morocco, where there have been alleged sightings.

It is not known if police have investigated the Mauritania theory as part of their investigations.

Shortly after Madeleine disappeared on May 3, 2007, a traveller reportedly told Crimestoppers they saw a girl that looked like Madeleine on the Tarifa-Tangier ferry, four days after she vanished.

Two days later, a tourist reported seeing a girl “identical” to Madeleine with a man at a petrol station next to an Ibis hotel in Marrakech, the Mirror reported.

According to the newspaper, Mari Olli and British husband Ray Pollard, who live in Spain, said they had not heard of Madeleine’s disappearance when they made the possible sighting and only made the connection when they returned home.

She said the youngster she saw was wearing blue pyjamas, looked “sad” and asked: “Can we see Mummy soon?”

Ms Olli said she alerted Portuguese and UK authorities and gave a statement to Scotland Yard detectives. She followed it up by emailing Leicestershire Police.

Portuguese police files made public a year after Madeleine's disappearance show British police passed on the email to their Portuguese counterparts but Ms Olli says she was never contacted by officers there.

"I try not to think about what I could have done. The one thing I’m still convinced about is that it was Madeleine," she told the Mirror.

Madeleine vanished from Praia da Luz in May 2007 when the three-year-old was sleeping in the family's apartment with her siblings, twins Amelie and Sean.

At the time, her parents, Gerry and Kate, were eating dinner with friends at a restaurant around 40 yards away.

Child protection expert Mark Williams-Thomas said “bungling” Portuguese police should have released the e-fits of the two suspicious men seen hanging around Praia da Luz just before the little girl vanished.

And they should have acted immediately to investigate the possible Dutch sighting, he said.

Shop assistant Anna Stam, 41, told detectives she spoke to a little girl aged three or four in Amsterdam who said her name was “Maddie” and replied to a question about her mother: “They took me from my holiday.”

“These files reveal the inadequacies of the police investigation,” said Mr Williams-Thomas.

“There is absolutely no excuse for failing to release those e-fits. What value is there in doing a photofit unless you’re going to release it?

“They have failed to do some of the very basics.”

He said the police clearly had “no media strategy”, and narrowed their investigation “very quickly” to looking at the McCanns.

If they failed to follow up the Amsterdam lead then by now it is probably of no use , he said.

Over time, the value of the tip-off deteriorates as CCTV is wiped or lost and other possible witnesses forget or cannot be contacted.

“The information from Amsterdam is probably of no value now at all - because if it was something that was real then you needed to act upon it straight away.

“She could be anywhere by now.”

He accused the police of “giving up” and said the evidence should have been reviewed by another force before being made public.

“The file should have been made available to another law enforcement agency from another country and they should have been able to review it before it was made public.

“There is information there which should not have been put in the public domain and should have been followed up. It is a huge blunder to make it public.

“They have given up. They have have completely given up. The only people looking for Madeleine are the McCanns. The police are absolving themselves of responsibility.

“What we’ve got now is a public investigation - it’s extraordinary. Fifteen months after she went missing they have closed the case and given up - it would never happen in Britain.”

Scotland Yard is to ask for more money to continue its six-year investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Detectives are struggling to resolve a final lead, which, if it fizzled out, could have brought the £11m Government-funded investigation to an end next month.

I understand that the Home Office is willing to carry on paying for the last bit of work to be completed.

A source said: "We will be asking for more money because we need to complete the work we are doing. It is complicated and not as straightforward as we had hoped, but it is worth doing."

Madeleine was nearly four years old when she vanished without trace from her family's rented holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

The Portuguese police closed their investigation 15 months later, after finding nothing to explain her disappearance.

In 2011, after an appeal from her parents Kate and Gerry McCann, the then Prime Minister David Cameron asked Scotland Yard to investigate with special Home Office funding.

Sixteen months ago then Scotland Yard Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said his squad - reduced in 2015 from 30 to three staff - was expecting to close a final investigative lead within months.

"That line of inquiry probably at the moment is the conclusion of this inquiry," he said.



In April this year, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said detectives were still following a critical lead.

"We have a significant line of inquiry which is worth pursuing and because it's worth pursuing it could provide an answer - but until we've gone through it I won't know whether we are going to get there or not."

Police will give no details of the lead - nor why it is proving so difficult to resolve. But they want more time to pursue it.

There has been speculation that it involves a hunt for a suspect or a key witness, but none of that has been confirmed.

Retired Metropolitan Police detective Peter Kirkham said: "Media interest and the political drive for it to be done in the first place will add to a reluctance to stop the investigation until they are absolutely sure they have done everything they can.

"If a line of inquiry has any signs of life in it whatsoever, they will be saying 'this is here and we can do it but we'll need this amount to do it and if you don't wish to pay for it that is your decision'."

A spokesman for Madeleine's family told Sky News: "The McCanns will be pleased. The fact that the police feel there is still work to be done which needs funding is very encouraging.

"They remain grateful to all the officers involved in the investigation."

Scotland Yard said: "Funding is in place until the end of September. Any details about future funding will be released when appropriate."

The Home Office confirmed that funding for Operation Grange had been provided until the end of next month.

The British investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has been scaled down from 29 officers to four as her parents say they have not given up hope of seeing their daughter again.

Scotland Yard insisted the probe continued but with a “smaller team”, adding: “Officers investigating her disappearance have completed the huge task of bringing together and investigating the massive amount of information held by colleagues in Portugal, the United Kingdom investigation and the private investigators working on behalf of the McCann family.”

Madeleine went missing in May 2007, vanishing from her family's holiday home in Praia da Luz while her parents ate at a nearby restaurant.

Costs of the ensuing investigations have reached £10 million and after a Home Office review of the case started four years ago.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said investigators are now following a “small number of focused lines of inquiry” that allow them to cut stuff [a typo Messrs Grauniad or a Freudian slip?]  from the Government-funded team.

“Operation Grange is working to support the Portuguese investigation and this work continues,” he added.

“While there remain lines of inquiry to follow, the vast majority of the work by Operation Grange has been completed.”

Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, thanked the investigators and said they remain hopeful that their daughter will still be found.

“We are reassured that the investigation to find Madeleine has been significantly progressed and the MPS has a much clearer picture of the events in Praia da Luz leading up to Madeleine's abduction in 2007,” they said in a joint statement.

“Given that the review phase of the investigation is essentially completed, we fully understand the reasons why the team is being reduced.

“We would also like to thank the Home Office for continuing to support the investigation.

“Whilst we do not know what happened to Madeleine, we remain hopeful that she may still be found given the ongoing lines of enquiry.”

Officers had reviewed more than 40,000 documents from law enforcement agencies in Britain and abroad, as well as private investigators, by 2012 in efforts to find new leads.

The new investigation then launched, taking 1,338 statements and collecting 1,027 exhibits to identify 560 lines of enquiry, which sparked more than thirty international requests.

No suspects for Madeleine’s abduction have been charged but the Met said 60 “persons of interest” had been investigated, 650 sex offenders considered and 8,685 potential sightings of the girl investigated.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said: “The Met investigation has been painstaking and thorough and has for the first time brought together in one place what was disparate information across the world.

“This work has enabled us to better understand events in Praia da Luz the night Madeleine McCann went missing and ensure every possible measure is being taken to find out what happened to her.

“We still have very definite lines to pursue which is why we are keeping a dedicated team of officers working on the case. We have given this assurance to Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann.

“The Portuguese police remain the lead investigators and our team will continue to support their inquiry… I know they remain fully committed to investigating Madeleine's disappearance.”

Madeleine McCann inquiry could end in months, says Met chief

The investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance could finish in the next few months.

The Scotland Yard boss, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said investigators were following one remaining line of inquiry and unless any new evidence emerged, that would spell the end of the British investigation.

Madeleine vanished at the age of three while on holiday with her parents in Portugal in 2007, and despite a high-profile search, no trace of her has ever been found.

Speaking on LBC radio, Hogan-Howe said: “There’s been a lot of investigation time spent on this terrible case. It’s a child who went missing. Everybody wants to know if she is alive and, if she is, where is she, and sadly if she’s dead then we need to give some comfort to the family.

“It’s needed us to carry out an investigation together with the Portuguese and other countries have been involved. There is a line of inquiry that remains to be concluded and it’s expected that in the coming months that will happen.”

The Home Office has given £95,000 funding to keep the investigation – on which only a handful of officers are working – going for another few months.

Hogan-Howe said: “The size of the team has come down radically. We are now down to two or three people; at one stage there were about 30 officers in it.

He added: “There is a line of inquiry that everybody agrees is worthwhile pursuing.”

When asked when the investigation, called Operation Grange, will end, the Metropolitan police chief constable said: “At the moment it would be at the conclusion of this line of inquiry unless something else comes up. If somebody comes forward and gives us good evidence we will follow it. We always say that a missing child inquiry is never closed.

“First of all, the line of inquiry that is being pursued, that obviously is important and it is important that is resolved, and I think it will be. If something new comes forward we will investigate it, but that line of inquiry probably at the moment is the conclusion of this inquiry.”

Hopes were high when the UK investigation into the girl’s disappearance was launched in 2011, with Scotland Yard detectives later highlighting a sex offender who had targeted British families with young children staying in villas in the same area where Madeleine was last seen.

The E-fits of a ‘new’ suspect for Madeleine McCann’s disappearance were drawn up five years ago – and suppressed.

Images of a man seen carrying a child through Praia da Luz at 10pm on the night the then three-year-old vanished were unveiled on BBC1’s Crimewatch two weeks ago.

They are based on evidence from Irish holidaymaker Martin Smith and his family. At the same time, the British police team behind a new investigation revealed they had discounted a 9.15pm sighting of a man with a child by Jane Tanner, a friend holidaying with parents Gerry and Kate McCann and their three children.

It meant there was a new ‘timeline’ of Madeleine’s presumed abduction. Yet it emerged yesterday that the recently released E-fits were in fact contained in files produced five years ago by private investigators hired by the McCanns. Similarly, those private detectives had questioned the Tanner sighting and the timings associated with it.

But the E-fits were kept private, and the questioning of the Tanner sighting and related timeline were kept quiet. One detective said he was ‘utterly stunned’ to see his five-year-old dossier suddenly presented as new on TV.



The investigator told a Sunday newspaper: ‘I was absolutely stunned when I watched the programme... it most certainly wasn’t a new timeline and it certainly isn’t a new revelation. It is absolute nonsense to suggest either of those things... and those E-fits you saw on Crimewatch are ours.’

The McCanns are now fully behind the fresh police drive and release of the E-fits – but five years ago they were reluctant to issue them, possibly in part because witness Mr Smith’s account seemed inconsistent and unreliable.

Months after the disappearance and after seeing Gerry McCann on TV, Mr Smith told police that he thought the man he saw carrying a girl around Madeleine’s age at the very time she went missing reminded him of Gerry McCann himself.

Mr Smith has reportedly since withdrawn that claim – just as Portuguese police have officially told the McCanns they are no longer suspects for their daughter’s disappearance.

The couple have also won libel damages for false suggestions that they were in any way involved.

Numerous witnesses have also given statements making clear that Mr McCann was at his holiday complex at the moment the sighting occurred – which was at the very time when he and his wife started calling for help looking for Maddie.

But shortly after Mr Smith told police Mr McCann may have been the man he had seen carrying a little girl, a friend of the McCanns said: ‘Look at the facts. This man sees an individual carrying a child on the night Maddie vanished.

‘He waits 13 days to report this to the police, going back to Ireland  in the meantime. At this stage he admits he has no idea who the man is. Almost four months go by before, after seeing him on TV, he feels that it could be Gerry.

‘The truth is that this is part of  the victimisation of Gerry and Kate which has gone on from the very beginning by the Portuguese.’

In 2008, the McCanns used money from their charity fund to hire investigators from a firm called Oakley International, led by  former MI5 surveillance officer Henri Exton, to look into the mystery – and they focused on the Smith sighting.

They produced a dossier and called for the E-fits to be published. They also suggested Madeleine could have died after wandering off.

The McCanns, who became embroiled in an unconnected financial dispute with Oakley International at around the time they received the dossier, responded by warning the detectives of legal action if they publicised their report.

A source close to the fund said the report would have been ‘completely distracting’ if it had become public.

The parents of Madeleine McCann have compiled a heart-rending list of all the things they miss about their long-lost daughter in the run-up to Christmas.
The list accompanies a picture of the couple standing at their front door in Rothley, Leics.

The photo, taken for the charity Missing People’s Home for Christmas Exhibition, is among 12 pictures of -families who have missing loved ones.
The exhibition – at The Crypt in London’s St-Martin-in-the-Fields – highlights the plight of thousands of people across Britain who are living in limbo after the disappearance of a family member.

A charity spokesperson said: “These powerful images depict families standing by their front doors, symbolising the hopes and fears experienced by those desperately waiting for news.”

The picture of heart doctor Gerry and former GP Kate , both 47, is on public view until November 22. The couple, parents to 10-year-old twins Sean and Amelie, refuse to give up hope of finding their eldest child, who would now be 12.

Madeleine disappeared from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in May 2007.

Breaking a silence lasting several months, the father of missing toddler Madeleine McCann this week spoke exclusively to The Portugal News about the ongoing search to find his daughter. He also spoke of the effects Madeleine’s disappearance has had on his family. Gerry McCann singled out the local community for praise and expressed appreciation for all the sacrifices they have been forced to endure the past two years, such as the negative impact the case has had on jobs and tourism in the area. He also admitted that cash in the Find Madeleine Fund is now only a few months away from being exhausted.



Shortly before leaving for Faro Airport on Sunday afternoon culminating what had been a whirlwind visit to Praia da Luz, Gerry McCann sat down in a Praia da Luz hotel room for his first media interview in months.

“I can totally understand that people want to move on”, said Mr McCann when questioned over the apparent animosity towards him on Saturday when he visited the site of his daughter’s disappearance.

“They don’t want the media intrusion and the negative association with Madeleine’s abduction. For me, and this is going right back to 2007 – I didn’t feel any evil around Praia da Luz or anywhere else in Portugal. What happened here could have happened anywhere in the world”, argued a composed and soft-spoken Mr McCann.

“Actually, the amazing response we had from the community was incredibly important to us”, he said.

As for the heckling by a small group of middle-aged locals who had been monitoring filming closely since Saturday morning, Mr McCann said: “That aspect was everything I had hoped could be avoided”, by keeping the visit under wraps.

He had demanded the utmost secrecy from all those involved in the weeks leading up to the filming of the television documentary by Mentorn Media for the May 7th showing of the programme Cutting Edge on Channel 4.

He repeatedly expressed regret at the negative impact his daughter’s disappearance has had on the region.

“I am sorry for any harm caused to Praia da Luz”, he said, before repeating an earlier request: “I specifically want to thank the local population for all their support and tolerance.”

But news of the sacking of more than half of the staff at Ocean Club resort shortly before his fleeting visit was met with regret by the man whose leftist political stance is well-documented, while his background includes growing up in a working class family on a council estate in Glasgow.
There have also been murmurings that former employees are contemplating legal action against the McCanns for loss of income, especially as the ‘Maddie Case’ is cited as one of the reasons for their dismissal. Mr McCann put this down to “the need to blame someone” for what has happened, saying that if any legal proceedings were to be instituted, they should be directed at “Madeleine’s abductor”.

On his return to Praia da Luz and the absence of his wife Kate, Mr McCann explained: “Kate and I have been desperate to come back to Praia da Luz, but we haven’t done so due to the media exposure and the controversy such a visit would pose. We want to come back and meet the people, without it being highlighted. There is nothing bad about this resort, it is beautiful. In these difficult economic times we don’t want to worsen things. But I do hope people understand why we are doing what we’ve done. This is a key factor in an investigation strategy. Madeleine is still missing. We need to do everything reasonable to get any information. The best thing for everyone is that she is found and that whoever took her is caught”.
Mr McCann ruled out any other visits to Portugal in the near future and as for Madeleine’s mother, said: “She’d love to come back. But we will not be returning for the anniversary. We wanted to come here and do this as quietly as possible and not to disrupt”, with last weekend’s media attention not aiding this desire.

“We want to get to the stage where Kate and I coming to Portugal is not a news story”, he said.

“Walking down into the Ocean Club felt like we were going backwards, that bit of it at least - I was the story with the media focussing on me.

“The reason we are doing this documentary is that it should be about Madeleine. I can understand why people don’t like it or that our level of child care was not to their standard, but the focus should be on an innocent child and that someone has taken her.

“There’s one thing that has been revealed in the case files which is that there is no evidence that Madeleine is dead and there is no evidence to suggest that Kate and I were involved in any theories. It’s about Madeleine. As her parents, I hope people understand that we have to do what we are doing”, argued Mr McCann.

Visibly uncomfortable at the question, Mr McCann, when asked about the toll Madeleine’s disappearance has had on his marriage, responded by saying: “We are united in our search for Madeleine and we are very strong in our relationship”.

And how have the twins been coping with their sister’s prolonged absence?

“They talk about her everyday. They are great. Literally, saying: ‘When Madeleine comes home…’. When we are having bad days [these comments] drive you on”.

But Gerry McCann refused to answer a question on whether or not Madeleine’s room has been left unchanged in the event she is found.
“If Madeleine came through the door, Sean and Amelie would react like she went missing yesterday. She is still a huge part of their life and it’s refreshing”.

What have they been told about where Madeleine might be?

“They completely understand she is missing and they understand someone has taken her. There is not a lot more. We had counselling on how to cope with the twins, given to us by a child psychologist who has dealt with child abduction who said we should fill in the gaps as they get older. But, with us, the psychologist said the problem you have is that there is very little to fill in. The fact remains, she was there one minute and gone the next”.

Mr McCann also admitted that their approach to raising their other two children has been significantly altered by Madeleine’s disappearance.
“I am undoubtedly much more aware of potential danger or a threat to the kids now and things which we previously considered safe, and probably still are, are no longer.

“It’s a horrible balance we as parents now face between being cosseting and allowing the kids freedom, and at what age. I grew up in a very child-orientated environment, playing in parks, with minimal adult supervision. I think that’s healthy”, he explains as he leads up to the question about regrets they have over their actions as parents on the evening Madeleine went missing.

“Obviously what we did [leaving the children alone while dining at the nearby restaurant] we thought was safe.
“The whole aspect of a foreign child being abducted while on holiday never entered our thought process for even one moment, because if it had, we wouldn’t have done what we did”, he said.

An Ocean Club employee has said you were playing tennis on the Monday after your daughter’s disappearance while others were looking for your daughter, is that true?

“That is not true. The first time I think I hit a tennis ball was about three weeks later. We stayed in the Ocean Club for two months. What we were told in terms of counselling was that it was really important we get back into doing things for our mental well-being. Jogging was the first thing we did. It was only weeks later that we played tennis and that was primarily because my sister was over and she plays more tennis than I do.
“About six weeks after returning home, I played some golf due to the solitude and privacy it affords me, but I was followed onto the course by a photographer and that was just horrible - the invasion of privacy. I think Kate has played tennis once in the two years - it has become much harder for us to enjoy the simple things in life”.

On returning to the apartment last Saturday and how he felt re-entering it almost two years after last being there, Mr McCann said: “The apartment doesn’t hold any bad karma. It was just a couple of thoughts really, it was about re-enacting [the events on the night of her disappearance] and it was where I last saw Madeleine. But actually, I felt more emotional at church this morning [last Sunday] with the support and seeing the photograph of Madeleine with the words ‘Help me’ along with the green and yellow ribbons around it was more difficult to cope with.
”
Gerry McCann explained his involvement with the documentary, which will be aired next month and shown in several European countries including Portugal shortly afterwards, was purely aimed at finding Madeleine.

He also recalled that failed attempts to stage a police reconstruction were not of their doing.

“We would have been obliged to come back [due to their status as arguidos that was only lifted last July]. It did not fall on us to do it, but other people. Don’t get me wrong, we had major concerns as to why the reconstruction was being done. As opposed to this reconstruction, which will be broadcast with a view to getting new information, the police reconstruction was not aimed at finding Madeleine, but rather to look for inconsistencies. There were 12 or 15 people involved and it is inevitable there would be inconsistencies”, he said. A response which led to the question over his disagreement with Jane Tanner [a member of the so-called Tapas 7] over where he was standing as Miss Tanner walked passed him the night she spotted a man taking what she believed to be a man carrying a child:

“In my mind, I am 100 percent certain I was on the other side of the road, though Jane Tanner and Jez Wilkins said I was on the side closest to the apartment. I can’t resolve that, I remember making a conscious decision to cross the road”.

Mr McCann also revealed that the family has made peace with the fact they might never see Madeleine again, but would never give up the search for her.

“We have always known that’s a possibility and that is why we have to rely on other people. And we have that incredibly difficult balance between doing this [filming the reconstruction] and the human interest aspect. While we also want our lives to be private and normal for the sake of Sean and Amelie, we also need to do as much as we can. It’s a possibility we might never see her again, but until we have absolute definitive evidence of what happened to Madeleine, we can’t stop searching.”

Do you think the Portuguese PJ police did everything within their powers to find Madeleine?

“I think the way you are asking the question is right. PJ did more in this case than on many other occasions and worked extremely hard. And there were many different pressures. If you look back there were probably mistakes made on all sides.”

As for the role of private investigators and reconstructions, Mr McCann said it was a way of ensuring no stone is left unturned in the search for his daughter.

“At the minute there is no law enforcement agency actively looking for Madeleine and by that, I mean looking at the evidence saying; where are the gaps and what more can we do? And that’s what we need. We have severe limitations and issues of jurisdiction and we realise we have to work with the authorities. We will hand over all relative information we obtain as we do not want to waste resources nor do we want to duplicate things.”
The Find Madeleine Fund, which has received around 2.5 million pounds since it was set up shortly after Madeleine’s disappearance in 2007, now appears to be running out of financial resources.

“There’s still money in it”, says Mr McCann, adding: “I can’t give you the exact figure, but we have spent and continue to spend a lot of money with the aim of trying to enhance the chance of finding her.

On the chances of the Fund drying up completely he responded: “It won’t dry up in the next few months, but probably by the end of the year, at the rate we are running.”

He concluded that fundraising is presently being considered as an option to boost funds and thus ensure an ongoing interest in finding Madeleine.

Madeleine McCann's parents have been given a strict warning by the police not to talk about their missing daughter ahead of the 11th anniversary next week.

Kate and Gerry McCann were asked to appear on talk show, Loose Woman but detectives have warned them that it would "not be helpfuly" for the case, according to The Sun.

Loose Women producers were believed to want an exclusive chat with the heartbroken parents to mark 11 years since Madeleine disappeared when they were on a family trip to the Portuguese holiday spot of Praia De Luz back on 3 May 2007.

A friend of the McCanns spoke to the newspaper and said: "They were told it would be a softly softly discussion about how they are coping after all these years and how their twins are faring.

"But Gerry advised them they would only do media if the police wanted them to, if it could help the search for Madeleine.

"They told them it could hinder rather than help and specifically advised them not to."

It is also reported that Gerry and Kate have turned down several interview offers from magazines and television stations so that they don't jeopardise the ongoing investigation.

The friend said: "They’re always bombarded with requests for interviews in the run up to the anniversary.

"They are not trying to be awkward or evasive with the press, but if police don’t want them to discuss publicly their life without Madeleine they will not do so.

"They really appreciate the fact the the Metropolitan Police are still committed to looking for their daughter."

The parents of Maddie McCann were given fresh hope last month after it was confirmed that Operation Grange has been extended until later this year.

The Home Office confirmed Scotland Yard will pursue a “final line of inquiry” in the hopes of finding the missing in English girl.

For four months one woman shared every day with Kate and Gerry McCann, all the false hopes... and all the tears. Justine McGuiness, the former press adviser to Kate and Gerry McCann, speaks out about one of Britain's most famous families...

I will never forget the pain that registered across their faces: primordial pain that no actor, however skilled, could reproduce.

Kate McCann didn't make a sound, her husband Gerry sat upright in his seat.

"You realise that if you get your daughter back you might not know her," warned the Portuguese child-welfare expert.

"What she will have experienced will have changed her beyond recognition."

It was the moment, I suspect, that Kate and Gerry began to realise that there would be no truly happy ending, whatever the outcome of their daughter Madeleine's disappearance.

It was mid-summer last year and the meeting was held in a second-floor apartment, my make-shift office, incongruously decorated, it seemed, with primary colours, like the set of a breakfast TV programme.

Sunshine streamed through the open window and the sound of children playing outside filled the room.

The warning came without preamble and jolted our senses. I'm sure it was not meant to be delivered quite so insensitively; the fact that English was not the woman's first language must have accounted, in part at least, for its bluntness.

Afterwards, Gerry told me how deeply upset it had made Kate. I didn't need to be told. Kate's emotions at such times weren't difficult to read.

For four extraordinary months I was at her side. At first hand, I witnessed her despair and devastation, the times, as well, when her spirits lifted – however fleetingly – with every scrap of positive information.

And once she was made a suspect, amid ceaseless media speculation, I watched her life fall apart.

Almost every morning she and Gerry would come to see me, usually armed with croissants which they bought in Baptista's, the village store, after dropping off their then two-year-old twins Amelie and Sean at kids' club.

I could tell instantly if Kate had had a good night or not.

If she was upset, possibly because of what had been in the papers or because of the approach of a poignant anniversary, I would know better than to offer a trite: "What's wrong?"

Instead I'd ask her to sit down and let her know that I was making tea. We always drank tea, endlessly, it seemed.

And if Kate wanted to talk about what was on her mind, she would do so. I just let her come out with it.

I began acting as their Press spokeswoman in June, having been interviewed by Gerry in London. They struck me as a couple deeply committed to each other.

They treated each other with care and great respect. And as well as displaying affection, they communicated constantly.

If they were physically apart they would be on the phone, all the time, and not just because of their extraordinary situation – I imagine they were always like that.

They are both intelligent. Kate is sharp and witty and self-deprecating; she is naturally shy but is the sort of woman you can sit down with and have a decent conversation.

Gerry is presentable and single-minded, an alpha male to his fingertips. Indeed, I expect even he would admit that his manner may have rubbed some of the Portuguese police up the wrong way at times.

On the first day I met Kate, they were waiting for me at Faro airport, and greeted me with a friendly: "Hello, Justine."

In the car on the way to Praia da Luz we set to work straight away, finalising plans to release balloons on the beach later that day to mark the 50th day since Madeleine's disappearance.

When the balloon launch was over, I watched as Portuguese women touched and hugged Kate, offering their support and telling her to have courage. It was deeply moving.

Later, Kate took me on a tour of the village. "That's the apartment," she whispered, nodding towards the place from where Madeleine had disappeared.

She also pointed out the home of Robert Murat, a suspect in the case, and the church that provided so much support to her.

Meal times were always a family affair. At supper, it occurred to me just how ordinary this scene would have appeared to an outsider. A normal family, passing the salad around the table and laughing with their children.

There were quite a few light moments: I remember how Kate was frequently teased about her intense dislike of sweetcorn.

There might also be talk about relatives coming out to join them, or other practical matters, but rarely during meal times, because of the children, talk of Madeleine.

Sometimes the twins, who began learning to talk in Praia, mentioned Madeleine themselves, however.

I remember Amelie saying: "That's Madeleine's" as she pointed at Cuddle Cat, the toy Kate carried with her at all times because it reminded her of the daughter she loved and missed.

Once, I remember Gerry's sister Trish saying to Kate with a smile: "Don't you think it's time Cuddle Cat had a bath?~" And on about Day 71 she finally did, a fact not lost on the photographers.

During the many conversations I had with the couple we spoke of many things, not just Madeleine.

They were interested in my voluntary work with the Liberal Democrats (I contested West Dorset in 2005 for the Lib Dems at the General Election) and I remember how we laughed about the story of Charles Kennedy, the party's former leader, being ticked off by police for smoking out of a train window.

And even though Madeleine dominated the news coverage – and, it goes without saying, the couple's thoughts – there were times when they expressed interest in other news from back home.

We spoke, for instance, of the terror attack on Glasgow airport in July. I remember Gerry, a doctor, on hearing the description of the burns one of the suspects suffered when his Jeep struck the terminal and burst into flames, saying straight away that the man would not live. It turned out he was right.

It didn't take long for me to get to know the routine the couple established as a means of getting through each day.

The first thing Kate did every morning was to say a prayer for Madeleine.

She then got the twins showered and dressed. After getting ready themselves, Kate and Gerry would take the children to kids' club, before stopping off at my apartment to discuss plans for the day.

The twins were a great distraction. They helped give Kate the will to get out of bed each morning.

Several times a week, Kate would go to the Catholic church in Praia. Her faith gave her hope and strength.

And both of them, particularly Gerry, kept themselves busy as a way of dealing with their trauma.

Gerry would work on the computer, sending and answering emails, in one of their rented villa's spare bedrooms which he had converted into an office.

Kate would sit on the veranda outside going through the mountain of letters. If any appeared to contain possible information they were passed straight to the police.

Every letter, even the strangest ones, were read with care. There were often toys for the twins and presents for Madeleine, which remained in their wrapping paper, awaiting her safe return.

The villa was cool and quite dark, and stood at the end of a short private drive. I remember thinking that it offered the McCanns a kind of sanctuary, and I think they felt that way, too.

Any donations were given straight away to the 'Find Madeleine' fund administrator, including all the cheques made out to Kate and Gerry, rather than the fund.

Naturally, Kate and Gerry were also contacted by people who thought they could help find Madeleine. One was Danny Kruegel, a South African former policeman who had invented a machine that, he said, could help locate people by testing a sample of their hair.

It sounds far-fetched. But he had apparently been successful in South Africa. He was very clear that the process was based on science, which appealed to the McCanns.

More recently, Mr Kruegel has been portrayed as something of a crank, but I can only say that at the time he was taken seriously.

After protracted negotiations with the authorities, he came to Portugal. Using samples of hair found on a brush Madeleine used, he set about working out where a search area should be concentrated.

After he left Portugal, Kate told me that Mr Kruegel had taken different readings, none of which really varied, implying that over the days he was in Praia da Luz, Madeleine's position had not changed or she had not moved.

I think the word that was used to describe the readings was "cold". I had the impression Mr Kruegel's machine had indicated where a body might be found.

The police warned Kate and Gerry when they would start the new search. They told me and I contacted the people I liaised with at the Foreign Office, British Embassy in Lisbon and Leicestershire Police.

Everyone was on stand-by, ready and hoping for a breakthrough.

Kate, Gerry and I thought that the reporters in Praia da Luz would spot the police searching, so we were prepared for the inevitable questions and comments.

One morning while I was working, I saw a military-style helicopter circling for what seemed like hours over Praia da Luz.

I thought I would be bombarded with questions about it when I went to see the media later, but not one was forthcoming.

In the event, the search sadly wasn't successful, of course. Once more the hope of a breakthrough had evaporated.

On August 3, we made the 55-mile journey to Huelva, the closest Spanish city to Praia da Luz, to distribute Find Madeleine posters and talk to locals.

It was a visit that would later assume significance, for all the wrong reasons. For it would be later suggested that Madeleine's body was disposed of at this point. How this could be thought possible, I have no idea.

Kate and Gerry were, after all, accompanied by a cameraman, who was filming a documentary, and Kate's old friend Jon Corner.

And as always their every move was shadowed by reporters and photographers. If they had dumped Madeleine's body, someone surely would have witnessed something.

The allegations would come later. Up until that point, at least, the couple's relationship with the police was good.

There were once-a-week meetings to discuss progress and, by and large, the detectives were receptive to ideas from Kate and Gerry, who were careful not to air their impatience at the slow pace of the investigation.

The relationship, which had been characterised by its informality (one weekend Kate and Gerry even went to a barbecue at the home of one of the officers) cooled significantly in mid August.

The meetings all but ended. And the phone calls, once unfailingly cordial, suddenly seemed aggressive and much less frequent.

When the police did ring, I think the detectives did little to disguise their suspicions.

At the same time, stories, apparently leaked by the police, began to appear in the Portuguese Press about the possible involvement of the McCanns in Madeleine's disappearance.

To the British Press I described the couple's relationship with the police during this period as having become more "formal". In truth, it had become downright hostile.

It must have been a few weeks later when, on a Monday afternoon, the McCanns received a call that triggered the second nightmarish phase of Kate's ordeal.

A police officer said that they wanted to question Kate later in the week. And he ended the conversation with a firm, devastating warning: "Kate should expect to be made an 'arguida' [formal suspect]."

Kate screamed in disbelief when she heard she was going to be declared a suspect in her daughter's case.

Everyone said the same thing – it was unbelievable.

So when Kate was interviewed on Thursday and again the following day, when she was indeed made an 'arguida', she was fully aware what was coming.

That did not make it any easier, of course. While Kate was being questioned on Friday morning Gerry was very agitated. He paced around on the phone, speaking to lawyers.

The police seemed to be working on the theory that Kate killed Madeleine, accidentally or otherwise, and that Gerry was instrumental in covering up the death.

After the relentless questioning ended, it was announced publicly that Kate had been made a formal suspect.

Afterwards, I drove Kate away from the police station and was struck by how she appeared both stoical and devastated.

And I got the distinct impression that the police had offered her a deal, or put considerable pressure on her to admit that she harmed Madeleine.

Amazingly, I was also given the impression that her lawyer initially seemed to think she should take the deal and admit she harmed her daughter.

Perhaps he was doing this to test her. I don't know. Either way, Kate was absolutely adamant that she would not be going along with any plea bargaining.

After all, this is a woman with a 'black and white' understanding of the truth.

I told Kate that the twins were being looked after by the wife of Father Haynes Hubbard, parish priest for Praia da Luz, whom Kate and Gerry had come to know well and regard as a much-valued friend.

I said I could take her there or straight to the villa. She wanted to see her children immediately. That was typical of her. Her family was the most important thing in her life.

During the journey back to Praia I reflected on the incredible events of the past week. I was absolutely clear in my own mind about Kate and Gerry's innocence.

While no one is perfect, I simply could not believe that the woman next to me had harmed Madeleine. And I did not believe, as was being suggested, that Gerry masterminded some kind of cover-up.

At the time, I described the allegations publicly as ludicrous. Nothing has happened to change that view. Had I been in any doubt I would have left the campaign immediately and gone to the British police.

But I never understood why they did not take the children with them for supper at the tapas bar on the evening Madeleine disappeared.

My two sisters, one a mother of four, the other a mother of five, have told me that is what they would do, as have plenty of other friends.

But then I don't have three children under the age of four. I, like many others, am hardly in a position to judge. I know it was a decision Kate has always deeply regretted.

A few weeks before Gerry and Kate were made suspects, friends and family had urged Kate to return to Britain with Gerry and the twins.

Gerry believed it was time to go back. But, having come to the Algarve as a family of five, Kate did not want to leave as a family of four.

In her mind it would represent an admission, symbolically perhaps, that she had given up hope, that it was the end.

In the end, she did agree – only for the sake of the twins – that they would leave Portugal in early September, when the lease on the villa ended.

When the time came we hugged at the airport and said our goodbyes. I watched Kate and Gerry walk away, up the

I then went back to Praia to brief the British Press for a final time, before packing. I caught a flight later that day and I was glad to be going home.

On the flight home I remember thinking that unless Madeleine was found, the McCanns would never be able to fully rebut speculation and rebuild their lives.

I feel desperately for Kate McCann. Her life has been ruined by the constant speculation and the continuing mystery surrounding her daughter's disappearance. She loathes the media spotlight.

She has to live with the knowledge that she and Gerry were not there when their daughter needed them most, something I know she deeply regrets.

Gerry has to live with the knowledge that he failed as a father and a husband in a basic duty, to protect his family. That, surely, is a terrible burden to carry, for any man.

One year after Madeleine's disappearance, I hope for Kate, Gerry and the sake of their two remaining children the media interest now ends.

I hope Madeleine is found, but I fear that will never happen. I hope the McCanns can find some sort of resolution, in private, to this hideous set of events.

Everyone will sympathise with the McCanns’ plight. But some are beginning to feel uneasy about their campaign and the coverage it is getting. Is it safe to leave little children alone? We speak to professor Carolyn Hamilton of the Children's Legal Centre about the circumstances surrounding the abduction of Madeleine McCann.
 
John Humphrys: I suppose all parents have three reactions to what has happened in the Algarve. The first obviously is to pray that the little girl will be returned safe and well to her parents. The second is deep sympathy for the parents of little Madeleine McCann, 4 days after she disappeared. The third is to ask would we have left a child in the same circumstances. Professor Carolyn Hamilton is the Head of the Children's Legal Centre a charity concerned with law and policy in this area. Professor Hamilton, what does the law say, is there a legal minimum age at which we can leave children?

Carolyn Hamilton: There isn't any minimum age in law. It's very much based on outcomes. It's based on 'are you placing a child at risk if you leave the child alone'. So parents have to weigh up all the factors and decide, is it safe to leave my child alone for a period of time. So for instance if you left a child alone for four hours, a small child, probably we would say 'no that's not'. But in the case of these parents, the children were asleep. We presume perhaps they were good sleepers they popped back every half an hour. The door was locked. The shutters were down on the windows.

JH: They weren't very far away.

CH:  They weren't very far away, at all. One would probably say that's a reasonable choice to take, that's a reasonable risk. There are those who say you should never leave your child alone for a minute, but perhaps that's not truly practical for any of us. And I think it also has to be remembered that sometimes children are abducted when the parents are in the house. That you can't sit in the room with the child all day and all night. But that's a very difficult decision to take, whether to leave a child alone or not.

JH: Well probably particularly on holiday I suppose in a way because you're in a hotel you think, you know, can we leave them in the room while we nip down to the restaurant for a couple of hours and I suppose most people would say that they would do that, depending obviously on the age of the child and whether they are good sleepers and all that. But it is an incredibly difficult decision to take all the time isn't it.

CH: It is a difficult decision to take but even babysitting services aren't really in the room with the child. It is difficult and I think it's fair to say that most people would leave their children alone for very short periods of time in those circumstances. It's not an unreasonable decision to take. It's just terribly unfortunate.

JH: But the problem is I suppose that in the end if you do it and something goes wrong then action can be taken against you.

CH: Yes, if you could be shown to have neglected the child or abandoned the child, yes, you could be committing a criminal offence and what the court would look at is all the factors. What did you do to make sure that child was safe, because that's what they really looking at. Was the child safe when you went out for a few minutes?

JH: Did you do all the reasonable things?

CH: Did you take every precaution that was reasonable? It's interesting that we have a website and 'Home Alone: Leaving Children On Their Own' is our most downloaded piece of information. It's what people want to know all the time. And it is a very unclear situation.   

JH: Well, I've no doubt we'll get lots of emails about that and again if people want to join in the conversation on that on the message board that's available at 9 o'clock. Professor Hamilton. Thank you very much.

Why is anyone even trying to justify this act of folly?

Never mind extenuating circumstance ... is it safe ... shall we shan't we ... so and so did it so why can't we ...it's only for half hour ... what could possibly happen, they're asleep  . 

Simple answer - no you don't leave young children alone under any circumstances and that's an emphatic no !!! 

I know it to be a fact that parents/guardians do leave babies/young children alone in a hotel room (not only British) whilst they pop down to the restaurant for dinner, maybe an hour, give or take.  It's wrong on every level - literally anything could happen.  It's hard enough to keep track on a child's safety when you're in the same vicinity (as verified by today's press report about the death of a child falling from an apartment on the Algarve - yes, I'm waiting for a connection) so leaving them alone unsupervised by an adult is just not an acceptable option.  It's a risky selfish act with little or no concern for the child's safety.

Leaving very young children alone in a room every night to fend for themselves whilst you go off the premises to a restaurant out of eyesight and earshot is an act of inexcusable cruelty condemned by the law and social morality.

Neglect = abduction.  No Neglect = no abduction.

MADELEINE McCann went missing over a decade ago while on a family holiday in Portugal.

As cops extend their search, here is what we know about the famous missing persons case - and what Madeleine could look like now.

Madeleine McCann was born May 12, 2003, and went missing a little more than a week before her fourth birthday.

Since her disappearance from the Ocean Club apartment, a former top cop has warned that security at the resort where the little girl went missing is still an issue.

Authorities are also hopeful that social media could help find Maddie, using her distinctive eyes to examine photographs on Facebook.

Parents Kate and Gerry posted a poignant tribute to mark their daughter's 15th birthday in May 2018.

Kate and Gerry last night wrote “Happy 15th Birthday Madeleine!” on the official Find Maddie Campaign Facebook page.

The message accompanied a cherished last photo of her as a three-year-old, smiling under a wide-brimmed sun hat and is posted alongside a green and yellow ribbon symbolising hope, strength and solidarity.

Their gesture cames after it was revealed Kate had laid presents in Maddie’s bedroom, hoping one day she will be back home to open them.

Kate, 50, previously said: “I do all the present buying. I think about what age she is and buy something that, whenever we find her, will still be appropriate so there’s a lot of thought goes into it.”
What age was Madeleine McCann when she disappeared?

Madeleine was three, nearly four, when she went missing from her family's holiday flat in Portugal on May 3, 2007.

Her parents, Gerry and Kate McCann, had left her sleeping with her siblings while they had dinner at the hotel's restaurant - only realising about 10pm that she was gone.

Police released an image of what Madeleine McCann would look like at the age of nine.

With her distinctive right eye, the image shows the young girl's face aged about six years from previous photographs.

Kate still spends precious moments each day in Madeleine’s bedroom, where her dolls and teddies are on display, along with a growing number of presents.

The mum said she could never ignore Madeleine’s birthday and the family “still celebrates her being part of our lives”.

She also told how she jumps from seeing her eldest child as she was when she was kidnapped to envisaging her as she would be now.

Maddie had been due to attend De Lisle College in neighbouring Loughborough and the school is still holding a place for her.
What have Maddie's parents said about trolls?

Maddie's family have begged people not to feed trolls online, instead urging people to let the vile commenters “starve for attention”.

Supporters of the McCann family slammed trolls who “feed on havoc and causing chaos” – saying anyone involved would be banned from the official Find Madeleine Campaign page.

In a note, the page stated: “Please don’t post your opinion on leaving children alone.

“Doing so will result in you being banned. No questions asked.”

The page clarified that banning was not done “on a whim”, but that the page was designed to support the family, and nothing else.

The post, written by the unnamed webmaster, added: “This is not a place for you to post your negative opinions about the McCann family.

“We are not a debate page nor a place to analyse the investigation.

“This is a support and information page for Madeleine’s family and the Official Find Madeleine Campaign (findmadeleine.com).”

The official page is not run by the McCanns, but has received their support.

IT'S more than 11 years since Madeleine McCann vanished from her family's holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in 2007.

During the search for answers which could lead to them bringing their daughter home, Kate, Gerry and Maddie's siblings Sean and Amelie have remained united and dignified in the face of over a decade of agony.

Kate and Gerry, were both born in 1968 and live in Rothley, Leicestershire. They are Roman Catholics. Kate Healy is from Huyton, near Liverpool and graduated in 1992 with a degree in medicine from the University of Dundee.

Gerald Patrick McCann was born in Glasgow and graduated from the University of Glasgow with a BSc in physiology/sports science in 1989. In 1992 he qualified in medicine and in 2002 obtained his MD.

Since 2005 he has been a consultant cardiologist at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester.

The McCanns met in 1993 in Glasgow and were married five years later.

How many other children do Kate and Gerry have?

The McCanns also have twins, a boy and girl called Amelie and Sean, who were born in February 2005 and are now 13.

Kate told The Sun Maddie's siblings are told everything about the case and any developments in the search.

She said: "The twins are doing really well.

"They’ve grown up essentially without Madeleine, knowing their sister is missing and they want her back.

"They are up to date, they know everything, they know if we are meeting police.

"There is nothing kept from them."

Are Kate and Gerry both still doctors?

After graduation Kate moved briefly into obstetrics and gynaecology, then anaesthesiology, and finally general practice.

She quit her job as a GP to devote her life to working for children's charities.

Kate never returned to her part-time job as a locum after daughter Madeleine's disappearance and handed in her notice in 2008.

Maddie’s dad is a renowned consultant cardiologist and a professor of cardiac imagery.

Professor McCann, as he is now titled, prides himself on having “established a national and growing international reputation as an expert in Cardiac MRI (magnetic reasoning imaging)” – or scanning.

When did Madeleine McCann disappear?

Madeleine vanished on May 3, 2007, when her family, from Leicestershire, were holidaying in the Algarve, Portugal.

Parents Gerry and Kate left their three children – including toddler twins Sean and Amelie – sleeping in their apartment while they dined at a nearby tapas bar.

When Kate returned to check on the kids at around 10pm that evening, she discovered that Maddie was not in her bed and was missing.

In September of that year, Gerry and Kate, who are both doctors, were sensationally named as ‘arguidos’ by Portuguese police.
While arguido is often translated as ‘suspect’, it actually means a person being questioned under caution.

The following summer the McCanns were cleared by investigators in Portugal who declared they had exhausted all avenues in the case.

In 2010, Maddie’s distraught parents met with then-home secretary Theresa May to talk about the hunt for their daughter.

The following year, Scotland Yard launched its own review, named Operation Grange, into the case at the behest of the future PM.

Two years later Scotland Yard said it had uncovered new leads while Portuguese police reopened their case.

In October 2015, Operation Grange was scaled down from 29 detectives to just four.

Last December, the Tory government injected extra funding into the operation as cops investigated a new theory that Maddie was snatched by a human trafficking ring.

Meanwhile, cops are now hunting a "person of significance" in a shock new development.

A source close to Scotland Yard's search Operation Grange said the person is now a "critical line of inquiry" in the £12million investigation, according to The Times.

And a former Met police chief has called for fresh interview of Maddie's parents and the Tapas Seven - who have never been quizzed by British cops.

How old would Madeleine McCann be now?

Madeleine would have turned 14 on May 12 last year.

In April 2012, UK cops released a computer generated image of Maddie showing how she might look aged nine.

A number of potential leads have emerged since the little girl vanished, but none amounted to anything and no arrests have ever been made.

Is the investigation into her disappearance still open?

Detectives working on the case were still pursuing "critical" leads at the time of the 10th anniversary of her disappearance, a Scotland Yard chief has said.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said there are "significant investigative avenues" that are of "great interest" to both the UK and Portuguese teams investigating.

Met cops believe she was stolen by child traffickers or sex fiends, or during a burglary gone wrong.

Kate said of the probe: “It might not be as quick as we want but there’s real progress being made and I think we need to take heart from that.”

On September 28, 2017, it was confirmed investigators have received £154,000 to keep the probe alive.

Without fresh funding Operation Grange could have shut down in as little as three weeks time.

The extra cash is set to fund the search until March next year.

Kate and and Gerry are “extremely thankful to both the Home Office and Scotland Yard for the continued funding,” their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said.

The Home Office announced it was ploughing more money into Operation Grange, the official investigation, at the latest request of Met Police.

In November 2017 it emerged that cops had travelled to Bulgaria to try and track down a paedophile's widow.

Reports came to light detectives were hunting down a woman dressed in purple, who had worked with her late husband as domestic helpers on the resort where Madeleine vanished.

In March 2018, Scotland Yard won Home Office funding to continue chasing a vital "final line of enquiry" for a further six months.

Portuguese police accuse McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell of 'lying through his teeth'

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have branded her parents' spokesman "a manipulative liar".

The head of the Portuguese police federation, Carlos Anjos, accused Clarence Mitchell of engineering a fight with officers to sabotage a reconstruction of the disappearance.

Police statements made by Kate and Gerry McCann were leaked to the media last week as they travelled to Brussels to promote a campaign for a child alert system.

The statements revealed Maddie was left crying the night before she vanished on May 3.

At the time, Mr Mitchell accused police of masterminding the leak to overshadow the visit.

But Mr Anjos told the respected Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias: 'He is a liar and a Machiavellian.

"Mr Mitchell wants to discredit the Policia Judiciaria and invent excuses so the McCanns do not come to Portugal to participate in the reconstruction of the night she disappeared.

"He lies with as many teeth as he has in his mouth. Finally we know what side truth is on."

A second Portuguese newspaper, Diario de Noticias, claimed police believed Mr Mitchell had leaked the police statements to Spanish television journalist Nacho Abad.

Mr Mitchell said yesterday: "It is categorically untrue and utterly ridiculous to suggest that I in any way leaked documents to embarrass Kate and Gerry.

"Why on earth would I? I will not stoop to answer Mr Anjos's wild allegations. All we have ever wanted is for someone to find Madeleine, without this kind of distraction."

He said the McCanns, from Rothley, Leicestershire, were considering the request to take part in a police reconstruction.

It is not the first time that Mr Anjos has caused controversy in the 11-month investigation.

He said that police have "bigger problems" than finding Madeleine, accused her parents of using "diversionary tactics" and hindering the investigation, and said Mr McCann, 39, was "indescribably negligent".

Meanwhile the journalist, Mr Abad, said the statements did not come from Mr Mitchell or the McCanns. He refused to reveal his source, however.
