* helping a man defend himself against a well-funded libel action by the McCanns that has lasted well over 6 years

* hindering the search for Madeleine

* causing the McCanns to withdraw from Twitter, and

* purporting theories.

Soon they will be held responsible for the Syria crisis, world poverty and global warming

Other than give a little girl a proper burial and a decent memorial there is nothing they can do.

There is no doubt. Over the past two days they've been making frantic efforts to claim there is an anonymous webmaster lurking in the background - but there isn't. It's another deception.

The official Twitter account behind the search for missing youngster Madeleine McCann has been shut down after being trolled by supporters of Ben Needham's family.

Kate and Gerry McCann, the parents of three-year-old Madeleine who disappeared in Portugal in 2007, decided to close the official Twitter account after receiving 'toxic content' and 'hatred'.

The parents said it was a 'great pity' that they had to take such action to close the social media page but said the 'abusive comments' were hampering the search for their daughter.

The decision to close the @findmadeleine account comes after administrators behind the McCann family blocked the Twitter account which supports the campaign to find missing Ben Needham.

It comes after administrators behind the McCann family's appeal blocked the Twitter account which supports the campaign to find Ben Needham, who went missing in Kos in 1991, aged 21 months.

At the weekend, the official @findmadeleine Twitter feed blocked the @FindBenNeedham account.

They said they did not want to be 'associated with some of the types of people they [@FindBen Needham] follow'.

It came after Ben's mother Kerry Needham publicly questioned the £10.1million which has so far been spent by Operation Grange to find Madeleine.

Worldwide searches to find both Madeleine, who disappeared from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia De Luz, and Ben – who went missing from the Greek Island of Kos – remain ongoing. Both sets of parents believe their children could still be alive.

Announcing the decision to shut down the official @findmadeleine Twitter account, a spokesman for the McCanns wrote on the 'Official Find Madeleine Campaign' Facebook page: 'It's time to remove ourselves from a place that allows so much toxic content to be directed at us and does not permit us the ability to protect ourselves from people who want to damage the search for Madeleine.

'When I started our Facebook and Twitter accounts in 2008, I convinced Kate and Gerry it was a great way to raise awareness. Since that time, I have witnessed overwhelming kindness.

'There is no doubt that the good far outweigh the bad. The vast majority of people care about Madeleine deeply and want to see her come home to her family where she belongs.

'I have been dismayed, however, at some of the hatred and sheer viciousness directed at Kate and Gerry through our social media accounts for no logical reason at all.'

Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for Gerry and Kate McCann, said there was no ongoing negativity or bad blood between the family and the Needhams. Both sets of parents believe their missing children may still be alive

'As a result, deleting our Twitter account is the only option left to protect ourselves and the search for Madeleine.'

Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the McCann family, said there was no ongoing negativity between the family and the Needhams.

“Deleting our Twitter account is the only option left to protect ourselves and the search for Madeleine”

He said: 'Kate and Gerry have always supported the campaign to find Ben Needham. Indeed, they have promoted it on the Find Madeleine Campaign social media platform.

'However, it is a great pity that due to continued, ill-informed and abusive comments by some social media users, the decision was made to close the Find Madeleine Twitter account.

'Kate and Gerry continue to wish Kerry Needham the best and hope that one day she will be reunited with Ben, just as they continue to hope that they will similarly be reunited with Madeleine.'

Following the announcement, the 'Help Find Ben Needham' Facebook page responded to thank members of the public for their support.

A statement added: 'All recent posts regarding Twitter have been deleted and can we please ask you to keep this page about Ben and we all move on. We thank you all for your continuing support. ‪#‎helpfindben'. Last month, a former police chief called for the worldwide search for Madeleine to be scaled down. So far, the hunt has cost taxpayers almost £11million and 31 police officers and support staff are still trying to find the missing child, who would now be 12 years old.

When fund was mooted they wanted it done, up and running at lightning speed.

Why when it comes to taking down site, they make a song and dance of it, giving it a few days countdown meanwhile creating all this hullabaloo in the press with their melodramatic commentaries?

Why not just shut it down immediately, doing it quietly?

They didn't make a song and dance in the press when they used tactics to turn fund into private limited enterprise when they could have given it time for charity status to be approved.

Few nuggets the papers are giving us. In addition to webmaster, they still have administrators and spokesman working for them, FOC or paid by the Fund? They suspended the private search saying it's redundant in light of police investigation yet they deem it necessary to keep their PR machine going at expense to the Fund. Surely Clarence Mitchell isn't working FOC for them? If that be the case then it begs the question why he gets himself so entangled with them that he's offering them his service FOC 8 years down the line?

Me thinks the press is taking the mickey, banking on discerning people to read between the lines. People can discern the hidden message in the papers articles, highlighting govt. resources allocation disparity between the two cases, and henceforth all the titty tatty, the questions and questions born out of it - the bad feelings, the bad blood, the resentment, the negativity, and more importantly the burning question why the McCanns were singled out to be given special treatment?

It's patently obvious the Newspapers agencies are paving the way for questions to be asked if Grange should come up empty handed; and if Home Office should keep schtum on a non productive result by Grange on this high profile case. The whole world and his dog knows the government special treatment of the McCanns and spending on their case is unprecedented and unparalleled in the history of missing children cases, so the whole world and his dog would desire to be enlightened by the government on their reasons why they bent backward to support one particular case.

Applause for Kerry Needham for asking the quesiton as to why all of the money has been given for the search for Maddie - I do not begrudge one penny of it for Maddie, but all children should be treated the same and Kerry is right to ask the question I believe.

I wish they would put a sock in it, they are so predictably boring. zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I don't begrudge one penny of it either if it will bring ~~the McCanns~~ the perpetrators to justice for allowing the death of Madeleine and for concealing her body.

Closing a twitter account is no big deal but the furore in the press over this is mind boggling.
Who would have thought something as simple as closing an account would capture the attention of nearly every title giving it sensational headlines. The tabloids are playing them right and proper. The more spin from their spin creature the more furore materials.

If this is example of what tabloids can do to them - maximize on a situation to show up their ugliness....wait until....

Why is every perceived slight or insult against the McCanns or their projects always used to ram ' Harming the search' Mantra home?
Is anyone stupid enough to accept a few negative comments on a social media site is going to stop this mythical search? Are SY going to down shovels? Will every holidaymaker cease spending their precious vacation time scouring the continent for Madeleine?

Kate & Gerry obviously have a different interpretation of harm to me. I would imagine the biggest harm was caused by the fraudulent handpicked teams of PIs running around Europe spending donated money like it was going out of fashion.

With regard to the webmaster, I don't think it's Kate. Sounds to me like one of those fanatical lunatic supporters who spend 24/7 defending the good doctors.
That would suit them. An unpaid volunteer who takes orders from Kate maybe?

I think TM have to react this way to anything that comes their way which is "unhelpful".

I think they have to keep on with the mantra "harming the search" because having sought publicity to gain support in the first instance. It is possible that if they don't keep a handle on social media there is a chance it could turn against them which is the abusive comments they have experienced.

Stick and stones IMO but I doubt TM can risk it getting like a tidal wave.

I agree their team of bogus PIs did the biggest harm.
Imagine not searching the 10ml radius cave they claimed Madeleine was held in. Haven't they heard of google earth? Some sort of visible pathway and a stationary car would give away the hide out on google earth......common sense really...just saying.

It's hypocrisy of the highest order for Kate & Gerry to claim trolls' commentaries harm the search when they sat on e-fits, when they didn't mount a search for the within radius-limit cave. Moreover pro and anti "trolls" words of war on twitter exists since almost the outset of this incident but that didn't stop sightings coming in when PIs were in operation. Just from this it's patently obvious trolls warfare (rather avalanche of "toxic" messages) hasn't harmed the search then, why now, after Operation Grange was in place suddenly the sightings stop coming in....bit of a strange coincidence that.

A propos the webmaster, if it isn't Kate it MUST be someone close and known to them empowered to do the necessary or act on instructions from Kate or Gerry. Can't imagine them giving that important role to a lunatic fanatical supporter unknown to them. It MUST be a trusted person to Kate & Gerry since it involves monitoring money from donations and product sales on their website.

As for their twitter account, if they used an unknown fanatical supporter that happens to the one of them that compiled the dossiers to man their twitter account then they are complicit in it. It was reported they have a few administrators manning their social media. It's probably their twitter account administrator is one of them involved in compiling the dossier. Only someone manning/monitoring twitter closely or constantly would be in the capacity and have the vested interest to stalk and track twitter account holders to have collated and compiled the trolls dossier. The Mcs complicity in it (the dossier) is a question that won't go away anyhow given BHH's statement and given their social media presence with administrators circumstantial.

McCann supporter Pamela Gurney was obviously an admin on the Summers and Swan facebook site because she was deleting people's comments, she deleted most of mine. So I wonder if she is part of the Find Madeleine twitter account?

Anything to do with the McCanns sells and makes massive amounts of cash, the more controversial the better.

The papers cannot say negative things about them in fear of being sued, so an easy way to stir the pot and get people talking/blaming/arguing/speculating, is to bring in 3rd parties who are not subject to any injunctions, such as the Needhams and the 'internet trolls'

The McCanns go along with it for the sympathy vote, as do the Needhams, the McCanns so they get more donations, the Needhams so they get more funding from pressure on the GVT, forums get discussing, Clarence gets a few days consultancy money, the media get to link it to other stores such as Amarals appeal....the cycle continues.

Everyone is a winner from what is essentially a non-story

Regarding the webmaster, i'm not sure it's relevant who it is, but i doubt it would be Kate. More like someone at the website hosting company, or a family member/friend who has given up their job to help the parents. I'm not seeing how it is important anyway.
