Online intrigue as McCanns close Twitter page and Amaral’s fund ‘goes missing’
Posted by portugalpress on October 06, 2015
Another eventful week online has seen the parents of Madeleine McCann shut down the Twitter account set up to find their daughter due to an “avalanche of offensive commentaries” from supporters of the family of Ben Needham - the toddler who went missing from the Greek island of Kos in 1991. The toxic mail was prompted by the findmadeleine feed’s “blocking” of an account supporting the hunt for Ben after Ben’s mother publicly questioned the £10.1 million (€13.6 million) of taxpayer’s money ploughed into the ongoing police hunt for Madeleine, when only €800,000 has been spent over many more years looking for her son.
But as the wrangle plays out in British and Portuguese press, another glitch has come to the surface.
Internet meddlers have “blocked” the gofundme page raising money to help beleaguered former detective Gonçalo Amaral fight the civil case taken out against him by the McCanns.
Whereas the page could previously be found by Google in a simple internet search, this week it suddenly became untraceable.
Bizarrely, search engine Bing still leads users to it - which has led to the online question: “Has Google prevented the search for Gonçalo Amaral Go Fund Me page… and if so why?”
The truth is that the page still exists and has now raised over €68,000.
In the British press this week, Jerry Lawton of the Daily Star stated that “a new libel case” begins tomorrow in Lisbon that could see appeal judges “strip the couple of £357,000 (just under €500,000), which they “hope to use” to find Madeleine.
A legal source has confirmed that the appeal is in the process of being considered but there is no indication for the time being when judges will reach a decision.
Nonetheless, what the Gofundme appeal online has ensured, said the source, is that Gonçalo Amaral is in a position to continue his legal fight, which he has repeatedly said centres on his own right to freedom of expression.

GA's Lawyer's appeal 'fund raising' page is NOT the 'only' thing that appears to have 'gone missing, disappeared, recently', is it?
Huge 'chunks' of money, 'donated' to Madeleine's Fund, LNSU, a private registered company, by OAP's, handicapped kiddies etc, has 'disappeared/been 'moved' into a 'special' fund, by board 'directors' of Madeleine's Fund, the McCanns!

Re: Online intrigue as McCanns close Twitter page and Amaral’s fund ‘goes missing’
Are the McCann's moving money in the event their own accounts are frozen? What the hell is going on and why is it allowed to go on? I read on another forum that the fund isn't facebook verified on Go Fund Me and that this could be why it is not showing on google but if it is listed on other search engines then that can't be the reason. Looks like it's been got at deliberately. Hasn't worked though seeing as it's had over a £1000 donated in the last couple of days. Seems to me there is a lot of panicking going on when you add on the twitter debacle.

Have I got this right? Money collected to be used in the search for Madeleine has been moved into a different fund so the it can be used .....in the search for Madeleine?jeanmonroe wrote:GA's Lawyer's appeal 'fund raising' page is NOT the 'only' thing that appears to have 'gone missing, disappeared, recently', is it?

Maybe the second account will not be a public account so not subject to year end publicity.worriedmum wrote:Have I got this right? I think you have got it.
Though it has to be said that the original "Fund" has been used for many things, but none include a "search" for Madeleine.
They have sponsored spokesmen, paid criminals, made a couple of monthly mortgage payments, travelled widely, and latterly paid a retired Irish bloke who said that Madeleine
was in a "Hellish Lair within 10 miles of Praia da Luz " but NO ONE has ever been to look for it.
So we may conclude that the original "Fund" was for something else entirely.
The second "fund" - or bank account, is probably not under the control of anyone except the McCanns themselves.
Mitchell did not say.
But the chances of their starting a Search now, 8 years on, are remote.
The chances of actually finding Madeleine alive are infinitesimal - in view of the obvious evidence that she died on or about 30/4/7, or on one of the days shortly before or after

As someone has said on McCann hashtag, if £10 million hasn't found her, £375,000 won't.

I think it's called the "ring fence" account.

Re: Online intrigue as McCanns close Twitter page and Amaral’s fund ‘goes missing’
Are we missing the other aspect to this about the gofundme page not showing up on search engines?
This is intriguing as it's entirely down to code contained on GA's gofundme page which specifically prohibits search engines from indexing the page. For the geeks amongst us the code is:
meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"
I've randomly checked a dozen or so other gofundme pages and none of them contains this code.
One of two things has happened here imo:
1) When creating a gofundme page, does it give you the option to hide from search engines? I can't imagine why that would be and even if it did, I can't imagine why the person who set up GA's page would have selected this option. You would want the page visible to the largest possible audience.
2) Gofundme added the code to this particular page. If so, why and at whose request?

The webmaster does have a choice whether or not to allow bots. You can restrict this choice to just Google...see here ...

Re: Online intrigue as McCanns close Twitter page and Amaral’s fund ‘goes missing’
If it is in the gofundmepage can Leanne, or whoever it runs this page now, complain to gofundme and demand have it removed? That should only be profitable for gofundme since they get a percentage of every dollar donated.
It would be fascinating to know who (asked to) put that metatag in there, ever more so when gofundme refuses to remove it.

Re: Online intrigue as McCanns close Twitter page and Amaral’s fund ‘goes missing’
There is nothng sinister about the added code on GoFundMe.
Originally many people were asking why it wasn't showing on a search. Then someone posted that Google allow people to block searches.
I'm in Toronto, 5 hrs behind so there was noone around for me to check anything.about the reasons for the non search.
I confirmed it existed and created a grphic to highlight and asked the questions that many were asking.
The following morning it was quickly established that GoFundMe do not make searches available if there is no Facebook account that links to it.
Its never been an issue before as Leanne had used her account. PJGA do not have a facebook account so the code to prevent searches was added.
This has all been confirmed.
Apparently the reason Bing and Yahoo still have it as searchable is because it takes them a while longer to get to that page.

I can access it on Chrome very easily. First one that comes up in the search.

This no more explains why the fund was first available via Google search and now it isn't than a man in the moon.
Either Amaral's gofundme account had an attached Facebook account from the outset which made it available to Google searches or it didn't. Did it formerly have an attached Facebook account which has now been withdrawn which suddenly now it unavailable for Google? Which is it?

Re: Online intrigue as McCanns close Twitter page and Amaral’s fund ‘goes missing’
Leanne started the Go Fund Me site... after her demise was posted with a paltry donation, she decided for her own and her child's safety to withdraw. At that time her FB account was also withdrawn, as an "attachment" to the Go Fund Me donation page. I don't believe that the PJGA have a FB presence... perhaps someone could confirm.
