An experienced hospital consultant died from an accidental overdose after injecting himself with an anaesthetic he hoped would help him sleep, an inquest has heard.

Dr Michael Davies self-administered a fatal amount of the drug Propofol - the same drug which killed singer Michael Jackson - in a bid to counter sleeping problems in January.

The 43-year-old, an anaesthetist at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton who had travelled to Hampshire to help with an operation, was later found dead by his mother-in-law.

Parish councillor Dr Davies had two sons, aged six and seven and died just four months before the birth of his third child.

Dr Michael Davies was found dead after injecting himself with Propofol in a bid a help himself sleep

The hearing was told that Dr Davies had suffered from sleep apnoea which was discovered after he complained about waking up and not feeling refreshed, and for a while used a machine to help him with his breathing.

His wife Victoria Davies, from Bishop's Lydeard, near Taunton, Somerset, told the inquest: 'He had a bit of sleep apnoea but there were no other issues - he was not still using the machine.

'He seemed to be quite happy and content and quite exited at being a parent. He was somebody who snored really loudly and to me he was snoring lately.'

The consultant had been staying at his in-laws, Paul and Elizabeth Ozanne, in Locks Heath, Hampshire, as he was due to work at Optical Express in nearby, Southampton on January 10.

On the night of January 9 he joined them for a meal at a local Tandoori restaurant and then went to bed at 9.30pm.

But Mrs Ozanne went in to his room to check he was okay when she saw the light was still on around an hour later. She found Dr Davies face down in a pool of vomit wearing a T-shirt and boxers shorts.

Two marks were found on his right foot as well as a cannula, a needle like device use to inject medicine into the body.

When Mrs Ozanne could not find a pulse she attempted to resuscitate him and called an ambulance. The ambulance arrived at 10.33pm and paramedics pronounced Dr Davies dead shortly after.

Mr Davies worked at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.

Mr Ozanne told the inquest in Portsmouth: 'He seemed fine, he was quite a loud person in a nice sense and was very excited that my wife's 70th birthday was planned.

'We talked about the Glastonbury festival as he went there for the first time last year and the two boys enjoyed it.

'He went to bed at about 9.30pm - the last thing he said was: "If I'm not awake by half seven, bring me a cup of tea please".'

Dr Creasey, Dr Davies' colleague and line manager at Musgrove Park Hospital, where he had been a consultant anaesthetist since August 2010, described him as a 'larger than life character'.

In a statement he said: 'He was always happy to go the extra mile if needed. There was nothing to indicate that he was ever anything other than happy and healthy.

'I was surprised Michael was in possession of these [drugs] outside the hospital environment.'

In 2010, Dr Davies had been suspended from his job at the NHS hospital Musgrove Park Hospital, Somerset, after he continued to work for another company while off sick for two months.

He was also found to have the anaesthetist drugs Propofol and Cyclizne Laclate in his possession, taken from the hospital, and he admitted to all the offences.

He was allowed to return to work but was banned from self medicating, unless with over the counter drugs.

Coroner David Horsley ruled the father-of-two's death was an accident after injecting Propofol to help him sleep.

He said: 'There was nothing to suggest he was depressed or that he was addicted to Propofol.

'He took it to relax himself, presumably because he had some sort of sleep problem.

'We can exclude the fact that he did it intentionally and we can exclude that he is a habitual user of Propofol.

'This has been an accident on his part - I am going to conclude that Michael has died due to an accident.

'A man with a promising career ahead of him has died and the children have lost their father.

Didn't R O'B 'find' one of his kids 'covered in vomit'?

Maybe, MAYBE, if 'true' R O'B 'might' have gotten 'there' in the nick of time, or we 'might' have been reading about 'a terrible, accidental, death' of R O'B's/JT's 'child!

jta: There's 'that' word, 'accidental' AGAIN.

GA: Madeleine 'died' in G5A, albeit 'accidentally'
---------------------------

'Could' Madeleine have been 'accidentally' overdosed with a 'drug', to 'help' her 'sleep', administered by one of two anaesthetists, FP or KM?

THAT would DEFINITELY 'need' covering up!

One or BOTH, INSTANTLY 'struck off' as 'doctors' alongside, possibly, 'others' by the 'joint enterprise' 'rules', by GMC.

FP was the 'last' NON McCann (on 'record') IN McCann apartment, G5A, at 19h00-19h10, 3rd May 2007.

Hi jeanmonroe,
Commiserations to the Doctors family of his passing away and the use of these drugs mentioned in his demise.

you are clearly mistaken as both Kate and Gerry "Emphatically"denied the use of medication on any of their children, which can be confirmed by the various statements, videos on you tube and Clarence, but any burgalators,Abductors could have administered chloroform to their children, walking around with it in their pockets, climbing through windows, jemmying shutters?
We are off to see the Wizard?

Of course!

Silly me!

I take it, you are referring to THE 'Kate' who called JC, in Liverpool, at 3 am, 4th May 2007, and 'empathically' TOLD him, that, 'the shutter was SMASHED', 5 hours AFTER she knew it was NOT!

I take it, you are referirng to THE 'Gerry' that said, 'emphatically', backed up, 'emphatically', by THE 'Kate', in her bewks and various interviews, that HE 'crossed the street' to chat with JW!

JW's 'emphatically' STATES, under threat of prosecution, for giving false information, under Portuguese and UK 'law', 'that, that is NOT TRUE'

JW's 'crossed the street' (SIGNED Police statement) to chat with GM!

I could go 'on' but. i'd lose my fingerprints, by keep hitting the keys, on keyboard.

I EMPHATICALLY 'love' all the 'videos/statements' by McCanns, and 'friends', all 'recorded/saved' for posterity.

Hi Jeanmonroe,
You are quite right about the videos and statements,He- De-Ho has some amazing captures of events in the demise of Madeleine McCann?
I do not think any one could make a costing of all the people that have been involved in the shenanigans to obfuscate justice in this case, but it has had a lot of dirty mucky little fingers suppressing evidence of what actually happened on 3 May 2007 in 5a Ocean Club Apartments!!?

red flag.

And yes I have always thought sedation was the cause of Madeleine's death. Now she can't sedate herself can she?

Sedation is very plausible, and fits very well with a cover up amongst fellow doctors, but I am struggling for this alone to explain the unprecedented assistance the group have received. Perhaps they are just very well connected, but I cant see them getting that level of protection for an isolated incidence of medical negligence in another country.

Sedation as a cause of death, yes maybe, but what else was going on in PDL ? Why are TM's being helped so much, and by whom ?

A remote mediocre resort, out of season, suddenly busy with high earning, attractive, professional people. Many of whom, we understand, are well connected. How strange.
