A brief history of The Complete Mystery of Madeleine McCann

The forum was launched on 25 November 2009, just a few weeks before Dr Goncalo Amaral’s valiant but unsuccessful attempt in January 2010 to overturn the draconian ban on his book, and the seizure of all stocks of it held in warehouses and retail booksellers.

Jill Havern, the forum-owner, and 7 others, including myself, joined the same day.  Six joined the following day, including ‘Hentie’.

Within four months of the forum’s creation, it current title was handed to Jill on a plate when, in a Channel 4 interview in March 2010, the McCanns’ chief reputation manager, Clarence Mitchell, said in answer to a question that Madeleine’s disappearance was ‘a complete mystery’.

CMOMM in numbers

Looking through the current list of members, we see that

By the end of November 2009, 34 had joined.

By the end of the year, 76 had joined.

By the end of 2010, 534 had joined.

By the end of 2011, 1,523 had joined.

By the end of 2012, 2,072 had joined.

By the end of 2013, 3,193 had joined.

By today, 4,116 had joined.

It can easily be seen from the above that new people have been joining the forum at the rate of around 1,000 a year, or 20 every week, over the past two years.

The rise in its membership has been reflected in, in fact surpassed by, its growth in readership.

Over the years I’ve kept a periodic check on the numbers registered as ‘currently on line’ on the three main Madeleine discussion forums: CMOMM, ‘Missing Madeleine’ (MM), and ‘Maddie Case Files’ (MCF).

A year after CMOMM was launched, MM remained the most popular Madeleine discussion forum.

In November 2010, the ‘numbers’ online at any one moment, in the evening, would typically be:

MM – 100

CMOMM – 45

MCF – 20.

At any one time in the evening, then, some 165 would be logged on to one or other of these three forums.

By August 2011, the numbers viewing CMOMM had gradually overtaken those viewing MM, and the numbers shown as currently online each evening that month were around:

MM – 100

CMOMM – 105

MCF – 20.

The total numbers logged on to one or other of the forums (at any one moment in the evening) had risen to 225 over the past few months.

By November 2011, typical numbers logged on at any one time each evening had fallen, as follows:

MM – 85

CMOMM – 95

MCF – 15.

The total across all three forums had dipped from 225 to around 185.

By November 2012, there had been a recovery of interest all round, and viewing numbers at any one time had risen in the evenings to around 260, split as follows:

MM – 85

CMOMM – 155

MCF – 20.

By November 2013, the equivalent figures had risen dramatically. The controversial BBC CrimeWatch McCann Show was shown on 14 October 2013, and at 10.33pm that evening CMOMM received its all-time high of viewers: 2,583 - far outstripping those viewing any other forum.

The caption: “Most users ever online was 2583 on Mon Oct 14, 2013 10:33 pm” can now be seen at the bottom of the home page every time one views the forum.

Consequently, viewer numbers were high throughout November 2013, with a typical number online at any one time being:

MM – 105

CMOMM – 450

MCF – 15

Total: around 570.

Numbers have dropped slightly since then. Looking at the past week’s figures, typical numbers on the forums at any one moment  in the evening have been:

MM - 65

CMOMM – 350

MCF – 20.

Total: around 435.

A fourth Madeleine discussion forum, ‘Madeleine McCann Mystery’, was set up by a former member here, ‘candyfloss’, in August this year. By November around 15 would typically be viewing it at any one time in the evening.

A surge of publicity this week about Operation Grange’s plans to interview 11 suspects, including possibly Robert Murat, led to another ‘spike’ in viewing figures across the Madeleine forums; at 10.00pm on 19 November, for example, 794 were viewing one or other of the four Madeleine forums, with the split being:

MM – 89

CMOMM – 659

MCF – 24

MMM – 22.

CMOMM’s share (659) of those 794 viewers was 83%.

There are of course many blogs devoted to Madeleine McCann where people can offer comment, and Madeleine is discussed regularly on generic forums, such as: Digital Spy, Websleuths, UK Justice Forum and David Icke’s forum.

But it’s clear from all the statistics that CMOMM long ago established its position as the No. 1 forum for catching up with news and analysis about Madeleine - and for joining in discussions about what became of her.

The readers of CMOMM: its silent majority

This was amply borne out by comments made by many members when Jill decided, earlier this year, to give notice to all members who had never made a posting on CMOMM that their accounts were liable to be deactivated if they did not make at least one post.

Here are some of the comments made at the tie – from the forum’s ‘silent majority’ - which I suggest give a true assessment of the worth of this forum to so many:

emmzp:

I have never posted, but I am an avid reader (and supporter of this forum). Please don't delete me!”

Mo:

Hi, I'm also new to this site and enjoy reading what others have to say….Please don't knock me off!!!”

moominmama69:

I never post but have read the forum daily. Would be a shame if I can no longer log in”.

macavity:

“I agree with the other members who, like me, just read. I will be upset if I can no longer see the latest in the case and other posters' views”.

Roadrunner:

“I'm with moominmama, an avid lurker for ages now”.

jjeebs:

“I read too and like to stay and hope to contribute”

Magique:

My work background is as a fraud investigator and I was trained to detect lies...I  have been reading this forum for a long time but chose to join when a topic I was reading went to the members’ section. I am not a poster either here or anywhere else, just a reader. The last thing I would ever do is disrupt. I use this site to keep informed & up to date plus on occasions to use varied arguments to try and persuade those who believe MSM that they need to open their eyes & stop believing what they read. I would be really disappointed to be ‘pruned’ but I know it is something that has to be looked at periodically”

tinkerbelle21:

“Hi, I am one of the ones that read here nearly every day”.

LombardySkeptic:

“I use this Forum as a source of genuine guidance on information and misinformation to inform my own views…I've been following this since day 1 (and despite the increasingly detailed maze of information) my opinion has not changed one iota”

Cloak’ndagger:

I read here every day but have not yet had the courage to post. Please do not delete me”

Jamming:

“I'm a fascinated reader of this site with little or much really to contribute”

Boosey:

I just want to say a big thank you for this fantastic forum and for the work that the Admins and Moderators do. There are some very able posters and I am learning a lot about this tragic case. Although I log on every day I just don't feel that I have much to contribute but I'm behind you all in spirit”.

Stay Free:

As others have said. Come on here to read every day and find it fascinating. So thanks to all the regular posters, Admin and Moderators for the great work you do”

A Mancunian:

“I read almost each new post each day”

SusieQ:

“I have been a member since last October (after the Crimewatch programme which I couldn't bring myself to watch) and visit every day.  I have never posted as like some others I don't really have anything worthwhile to add. I think this is a fabulous forum which is down to the great admin team and the research that has been done and is being done by some of the members”.

Dido

Please don't delete me I read this forum every day and am just starting to post”.

LoveDove:

“Hello again from the original silent supporter                    ”

interestedobserver:

“Hello. Keep up the good work. One day, maybe sooner than you think, justice will be done£.

Spandex:

“I read this forum every single day always hoping that justice will be served, don't post often though!”

Icewhite:

Hi - My first post, although read the forum daily. I have been following the McCann case since the days of the Mirror Forum. I will post if I feel I have something worthy of contributing”.

comperedna:

Admin: this is just to say I really appreciate your explanation of what trolling people did in persecuting some who thought differently to them by PM: personal off line messages. I had no idea!”

Batmann:

“Hello to all,   my first post, i'm a long time reader and try to read here every day. keep up the fantastic work, i just love this forum!

Sam s:

Keep up the good work folks”

Don’t Make Me Laff:

“Dear Admin. Like many, I read this every day. I ‘tune in’ every day and generally stay tuned in, I refresh the pages with current topics and read avidly”.

Whatahoax:

"Hello! I’m not really one for posting but I love reading about this fascinating case! Would love to continue to be able to do so”

Janus:

Just wanted to say thanks for the great resource that is this forum! I am glad this place exists and thank you again to everyone for all your interesting posts and insights!”

dmouse007:

“I'm another that reads most days but has yet to post. I usually find that by the time I have a chance to sit and read, anything I wanted to say has already been said anyway. But I shall try to find a way to contribute more”.

KimHager:

“Great job admin! I’ve got a new job (yay) but I still try to stay updated and post when i can!”

How often do members visit the forum and post?

The numbers of members posting each day can be gauged by looking at the ‘Top 20 Posters’ link.

The numbers of members viewing each day can be found by looking at the Memberlist and searching ‘Last visit’

The number of members visiting today (up to 8pm) have been:   153

The numbers of members visiting in the last 7 days have been:  321

The numbers of members visiting in the past month have been: 466

The forum as an intelligence service

One little known benefit of the forum’s existence is its capacity to attract people who may have relevant information about the disappearance of Madeleine to give. People send e-mails to Jill and she will pass information to members here who can make use of the information. This is usually sent in confidence. It helps to inform the research and analysis on the forum.

Even in recent weeks, someone has sent in relevant information about ‘The Last Photo’ and another has sent in very interesting information about Edward Smethurst’s recent dealings concerning at his former home, Black Dad Farm, his latest pub venture, the Norden Arms, and his latest business venture, a centre for pre-school children, Ashworth Valley Nursery, some of which might be published on the forum shortly.

These are all pieces of the jigsaw which perhaps one day will have been shown to have helped to finish off the ‘complete mystery’ that was, and is, and for some time will be, of what really happened to Madeleine McCann.

Dr Martin Roberts: "The evidence is that these are the pjyamas Madeleine wore on holiday in Praia da Luz. They were photographed and the photo handed to a press agency, who released it on 8 May, as the search for Madeleine continued. The McCanns held up these same pyjamas at two press conferences on 5 & 7June 2007. How could Madeleine have been abducted?"

Amelie McCann (aged 2): "Maddie's jammies!".

Through this forum

• it was discovered that someone had spoken to M3 - in Spanish - and had discovered that they were under specific instructions . . . .
It took me a while but in the end I managed to speak to the Managing Director in clear Spanish. I asked how was it that a Detective Agency of their standing could make such a ridiculous assertion making it known ‘they knew Madeleine was held in Morocco and they were going to get her’. He tried to wriggle out of it but in the end he said ‘DON’T ASK ME. THAT’S THE PARENTS STRATEGY’.

• it was discovered that the answer to a vital question had been "whooshed
I can’t believe that nobody seems to have noticed Gerry’s blundering answer when, shortly after Madeleine’s ‘disappearance’, a reporter asked him. This is on record.
Q: ‘What is the purpose of the fund?’
R: It is to continue looking for Madeleine after the official search ends.

• it was discovered that wind speeds and directions preclude absolutely any chance of slamming doors or whooshing curtains

• it was discovered that valuable video evidence exists of the high winds speeds just along the coast at the windsurfing competition.

And a host of other valuable things have been discovered over the years.
The reason this one has survived, I think, is the restraint shown by people when they defend their position, and are then put to the test by other posters, to adduce evidence, with references,
rather than merely stating their personal belief or repeating rumour.

It is that aspect of "demanding" references and evidence, which to me makes this particular forum so important / dangerous.  And why it is a target for so many others.

Congratulations CMOMM.

A terrific job by many talented people. I just hope it won't be another 5 years before these pathetic parents finally pay for their odious unparenting.

May one day we all know everything of their scheming dealing.

And may there be justice for Brenda.

Congratulations CMOMM.

Thank you to all the sincere and talented people who have given so much of their time and energy to finding justice for a little girl with no voice who has been exploited.

Thank you to Tony who continues to question.

Thank you to Jill for standing steadfast.

Thank you to PeterMac for tireless work.

Thank you to past members who have provided so much research material.

I hope CMOMM has no need for many more anniversaries.

God Bless Madeleine McCann

What a pity you choose to disrupt this thread. I seem to remember a previous incarnation on this forum.

How sad....sad for Madeleine that is.

Evening_All, this is one of the rare occasions where I feel I must comment.  I didn't see your post before it was removed, but I am a little concerned about your post above where you state "it appears that even they don't want to speculate". If every member just posted on opinion or speculation then this forum would have been closed down years ago. However, if we stick to QUESTIONING THE KNOWN FACTS, then I believe this forum will be here until the truth is finally out.

Evening_All, please do not send me pms. What you sent me could have been posted on the forum.

Thank you !

@ sallypelt, Evening_All has been banned.

Tony's history of CMOMM avoided the history of all the dealings Admin & Mods have had with assorted disruptors and time-wasters over the years. Admin's long list, posted a few days ago, of those banned, gives an idea of the sheer scale of disruption Admin & Mods have had to endure for five years in keeping this resource of information, research and analysis going.

Thanks are due to every one of you who joins and contributes here for the right reasons - and makes any criticism they may have of the forum constructive
