Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway described her time covering the disappearance of Madeleine McCann as “devastating”.

Madeleine vanished from a Portuguese holiday resort aged three in May 2007 and Kate, who is married to Chorley man Derek Draper, was among the first journalists at the scene.

In a career which has included interviewing political leaders and terrorists, one of the defining moments has been covering the disappearance of the youngster.

She recalled the experience while guesting on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, the ITV show which she will present now he has stepped down. Kate was then presenting GMTV, which received a call from the friends of Madeleine's parents Gerry and Kate.

Fellow presenter Ben Shepherd explained that those on the programme wanted to “do what we could to hopefully help the investigation”.

The new mum left the studio, went home to pack and bag and say goodbye to husband Derek and daughter Darcey before heading to Portugal. She was one of the first journalists to arrive in Praia Da Luz and remained there for around four weeks.

Asked if being a new mum made that feeling more powerful, she said: “I’m sure it did. It was a very strange thing when that call came through because it wasn’t something we did generally at GMTV just putting calls through but I think it helped to increase the pressure because what Kate and Jill, her friend, were saying is that the police had gone home and they were on their own and that call was a cry for help.

“It was devastating. I watched Kate every day walk down clutching that teddy to go and pray.

“Everyone stood back and I watched her disappear.

“She just seemed to be shedding flesh through the pain of it every day and I think it’s unspeakable.”

Asked about the criticism which Madeleine's parents have faced, she said: “I must admit when I was sitting on the plane I had an image of what happened but then when you got there and you saw how close it was and you realised that they were actually closer when they were having that drink in that restaurant with their babies asleep actually they were closer than some people’s back gardens.

“And I thought that this is just a very human thing that’s happened here and they’ve just been ferociously unlucky.”

Lopez is a name of Spanish origin I believe - coincidence or what? Connections with he of the Oily Olive Press perchance?

Another member of the clan McCann media fraternity?

Another one who was one of the first !

There were SIX there by 10 am on day 1. At what point do you stop being one of the FIRST ?

This daft bint left work, went home, packed, said goodbye, and then went to Portugal.
She CANNOT have arrived before late afternoon / early evening on 4/5/7 at the very earliest, by which time the place was crawling with journos all claiming to have been among the FIRST.

And as a NEW MUM . . . she abandoned her own daughter to make money reporting on someone else's ? Really !?
her daughter Darcey (yes, really) was born on 10/3/6, so was 14 MONTHS old when mum bug***** off for a month

Might as well save the executioner the overtime and put your own neck on the block.

Yet another who defends the kind of parenting who thinks it acceptable to leave very small alone .. Don't they realise the danger to them? Anything can happen in half an hour ?

Unless she received the early warning supposedly received by Jon Clarke, which would have to have been made about 8pm on the 3rd.

Taking today as an example, a quick look shows I can get a flight to Faro from Gatwick at 6.30 tomorrow morning arriving at 9.20. Half hour to get through airport, then one hour to PdL, so 11.00'ish. Pre-covid, more flights were probably available.

Is there any sign of her in the early photos of the journo's hanging around outside the apartments? Where's a 'super-recogniser' when you need one?
