Ah, yes. The Sun.
Phone hacking everyone else
How shocking. But do we also remember the McCanns absolutely UNBLEMISHED history.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2018/nov/29/madeleine-mccanns-parents-fail-in-bid-to-revive-leveson-inquiry

As we noted at the time .  [ Leveson thread ]
"Even more priceless . .   They tried to use a COVERT Recording of the meeting with Cameron, to present their case !
Chutzpah, already ! ! ! ?

At a hearing earlier this month, the four argued that in November 2012 the former prime minister David Cameron made a “clear and unambiguous commitment” that the second part of the inquiry would go ahead. Their lawyers said that commitment, made at a meeting with Jefferies, Mrs McCann and Hames, meant they had a “legitimate expectation” it would proceed.
But Lord Justice Davis said Cameron made “no such promise” in the meeting and that it was unacceptable that the case was based on a covert recording of the discussion, despite participants having agreed that what was said in the meeting would remain confidential.

Did the Sun corrupt the Mccanns, or the McCanns corrupt the Sun.
Or were they equally corrupt from the start ?

The strange PR campaign could have taken a much different slant and presented Madeleine's parents as continuously distraught but it didn't.

Blair - of Kelly, and Todd, and Iraq, and Campbell fame ?

But as aguila says,- why were they not portrayed in a different way, coached accordingly, and carefully controlled by their PR machine.
Other parents of lost or deceased children have held the public's sympathy and empathy for decades without any such help
Their aggression and lack of obvious distress until it is artificially turned on, and the instances of clowning, gurning, laughing
and totally inappropriate behaviour in many forms has turned significant numbers against them - even those who do not know the facts.
Even the Christmas messages are clumsy and unfeeling.
Perhaps no one is willing to help them any more.
Certainly the Sun seems to have turned, allowing comments to remain unmoderated for a long time, and subtly changing the wording from Abducted to Disappeared, just as one example. And publishing Kandohla's tripe without apparently editing it or checking the obvious nonsense it contains

I think the Government media campaign conveniently showed the non-distraught or let's say, dubious side of the McCs every now and then to allow seeds of doubt to be planted and grow. I have always believed that they will be thrown under the bus once the time is right and whatever hold Gerry has over the Establishment ceases to be of concern or becomes manageable.

As editor for The Sun, Dominic Mohan had this to say in defence of the tabloid rag during the Leveson Inquiry..

The Sun's support for the Help for Heroes campaign, as well as its ability to offer a "quick, digestible summary of very complex issues", as evidence that the tabloid, which sells 2.6m copies per day, could be "a powerful force for good".

Yeah sure - and the evidence is right here..

Tracey’s missed a trick again, but The Sun’ll go anywhere to squeeze MM into a headline:

It's weekend, I don't doubt Ms Oyl is frantically working on a Sunday exclusive that will slip past the editor's beady eye as we speak..

You will notice, every day there is some tragedy hitting the headlines that the day after tomorrow is yesterday's news and today's bog paper.
Somehow though, the McCanns managed to persuade one Lord Bell to keep them on the front pages for a year - allegedly think

One of the strange things has been the way the Sun has turned, from uncritical support to a position of 'Pretending to support' whilst allowing all the Kandohla nonsense and then keeping the comments open  - sometimes for weeks, un-moderated, so even the most venomous and ridiculous hatred and accusations can be levelled at the Mccanns and their supporters.

They printed this
""A McCann pal told The Sun Online: “Some of the savings have been siphoned off from the Find Maddie Fund into a fixed asset account, like a breakaway fund, which financial experts have advised them to do. It can be used for purchases like buying a house or building equipment."

They allowed the use of the word 'Siphoned' which in modern English carries a very specific implication . . .

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/siphon-off-something
siphon off something
— phrasal verb with siphon also syphon,

to gradually steal money or goods, usually from a business or government:

Over the years, she siphoned off hundreds of thousands of dollars from various accounts.

to dishonestly take money from an organization or other supply, and use it for a purpose for which it was not intended:

He lost his job when it was discovered that he had been siphoning off money from the company for his own use.

And Kandohla is a friend.  As was Brutus !

I think this is more down to the incompetence/ignorance of those reporting &/or concocting supposed quotes.

The half-million plus (now up to £594k) that was reported as being ‘syphoned-off’ is still held within the Fund, and was merely moved from ‘current’ to ‘fixed’ assets, having been invested in a (mainly) stocks and shares portfolio, rather than just sitting as low-interest earning cash.

If this suddenly vanished, it would have to show in the accounts.

Whether or not there is a publicly acceptable record of all the other expenditure from the account over the years, including accounting for the ‘Rothley cash in envelopes’ is quite another matter, it certainly is not evident from the published accounts, although any such cash could quite easily have been swallowed up in the 'Donation income via bank' of nearly £1.4m back in y/e 3/08, if it was all just paid in, although in the spirit of 'openness' it would certainly have been nice to know.

So much for the (still stated):

An experienced Fund Administrator has been appointed to ensure the highest standards of transparency and accountability.

And as I pointed out in:

#19

the last two years balance sheets are actually incorrect, yet still get signed off by the auditors and posted at Companies House without any apparent comeback.

Admittedly I don't pay much attention to the tabloid comments section, it's a bit like trying to follow twitter.  What I do recall however is how tame comments are, for the most part relating only to the alleged neglect issue and the inordinate sums of money allocated to Operation Grange by comparison to monies expended on other cases of missing children.  It rarely moves beyond that.

I believe the comments are moderated.  I was black listed by the Mail a long time ago, even now they won't allow my comments through.

As for the wording used, I wouldn't put any significant meaning on that.   The UK tabloids like to use words to satiate the appetite of the reader - salacious headlines to attract a wide readership, with a generous helping of words to emphasise the point they're trying to make.  Words like vile cop;  filthy pervert;  jailed paedo;  disgraced cop smears Maddie parents;  crook cop given the boot  blah

It seems to me they don't care much for use of Queen's english - they even refer to her as Maj don't they  titter ?
