BBC: The Cry
Is anyone watching BBC's The Cry?
It's quite good but it's soooo obviously based on the McCanns. So many parallels.
So what's going on? Why now? And why the message that the mother is suffering from postnatal depression?
However, she was quick to deny that the series was based upon this tragic true-life event.
She said: “There are umpteen sadly different high profile cases which have occurred over the years and there was no specific case that we were drawn upon.
“The show is an adaptation of a novel, and what interested me about the novel when I first read it was that it spoke about a very contemporary sort of crime.

Is The Cry based on a true story?
At the event, Mundell was asked about the parallels between the story of The Cry and the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007.However, she was quick to deny that the series was based upon this tragic true-life event.

Re: BBC: The Cry
I was surprised that nobody had posted anything about it yesterday when I looked, but never quite got round to it.
The story is quite clearly based around the Mc's, with so many parallels, albeit a baby rather than a three year old, hence the PND, rather than just mental stress and they couldn't copy the whole case without changing anything.
No doubt we will find that it was the husband who drugged and killed the baby in the short time he was 'in charge' on the plane, whilst she had a sleep, not being aware of what was in each of the unlabelled aircraft bottles, whereas the wife was adamant that she checked before administering anything.
Bit of a turn-up at the end with the trial, the girl being done for the murder of the husband, when you had imagined it was to do with the baby.

Here is another comment on the parallels between The Cry and the McCann case.

Whatever your opinion of David Icke, I think he makes some pertinent observations, particularly with regard to grooming the public to have sympathy for the mother in particular.
Bear in mind that it was written on 2 October, therefore before the latest revelations in last night's episode.

I've just checked and see that you are correct Roidininki.
Apologies for the mistake in attribution.
However, in my view, the content of the article is still interesting re the striking parallels with the McCann case,

Re: BBC: The Cry
Has anyone read the book? Supposedly it has a 'heartbreaking' ending, but they've changed it for the tv series. The dead husband plot twist was disappointing, it looks like he was responsible and she killed him on realising? I suppose it had to take a different direction to avoid being too blatantly based on one case.
Re: BBC: The Cry
Tracey Kandhola must have dropped off the face of the earth. Normally she drags the McCanns into any old nonsense story in which she can claim the slightest connection to the McCanns' "plight". We're in the 4th week of a popular BBC drama, with uncanny parallels to the McCann story and ... not a dicky bird from old Trace! No reports of Kate and Gerry's usual "bracing" or being "bouyed".
I do enjoy the cartoon on this forum of Olive Oil's frantic typing. Pity there isn't one for her with writers' block

OMG this is sooo similar! All the little details but slightly different. A bib instead of a toy. The bag. The drugs. Another country. The crying.
I think this is really useful in seeing and believing the motivation as well and seeing how this can snowball.
One big difference though is at the moment, no friends are in on it.

The author said on an nterview that she believed both mothers in the two cases she based her book on .Constablekid wrote:OMG this is sooo similar! All the little details but slightly different. A bib instead of a toy. The bag. The drugs. Another country. The crying.

Not only that but the ending in the tv series was different to the book ending .
There were many instances though where you could tell the script was indicating true life revelations ?

Re: BBC: The Cry
There was a jarring scene in episode two. The detective asks Alistair when he put Noah in the travel cot, obviously meaning alive at home. We then switch to a shot of Alistair at the bottom of the stairs, zipping up the travel cot bag. Implication being that Noah is inside.
I did in the end read the book. Something that really stood out was the 'drama triangle' as a metaphor. I suspect it was too confusing to add into tv format - basically, in the book, Joanna has been seeing a psychiatrist due to the mental stress of her relationship with Alistair (before Noah). The psychiatrist tells her about the 'drama triangle' - persecutor, victim, observer. At the time, Joanna can't work out why it is relevant to anything, and stops seeing her.
After Noah's death, Joanna has a fever, seeing triangles in her vision. She first goes to the tree where she believes Noah is buried, clawing at it madly. Then she's bed ridden and seeing triangles everywhere. She then starts anonymously contacting a blogger (which later turns out to be Chloe), giving them key details of the case, and leading to the house being searched (not before Alistair barbecues the bib). She finally understands the drama triangle.
The allusion to triangles and places of burial really put me in mind of the Sagres triangle, and Pat Brown's theory that Madeleine is buried out there somewhere.
The ending of the book is different in a few ways, with Joanna taking the wheel whilst Alistair is speeding during the final argument and swerving them into a road sign in Australia. The triangle motif comes back here again as Joanna realises the only way to escape her triangle with Alistair is for them both to die. She confesses to doing it upon waking and wishes she'd died. She's tried and spends time in a mental facility, and just like the tv version, she never finds out where Noah is buried.
The book was written in 2013, interesting that it's adapted now. I'd love to be optimistic but this case has had so many false dawns. I remember the BBC series 'The Missing' having a similar affect a few years back. In fact in that one it also ends without a body being found, and one of the parents out of their mind (although in the case of Jimmy Nesbitt's character, he is actually searching for a lost child rather than hiding the truth of a dead child).

The Cry and the McCann Story
I have read the book and I have seen the BBC series and I am surprised at how few people recognize that this IS a fiction story pretty much based on the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Although I am sure the McCanns would deny it and the author h as seemingly denied it (by saying the story was inspired by a number of different missing children’s cases), this story is extraordinarily close to the reality of the McCanns and what happened to Maddie (not directly, but in connection with the issues of the Madeleine McCann case). If it walks like a McCann duck....

@reallorraine so you despise Alistair in The Cry, but with an astonishingly similar apparent storyline, you are squirmingly up the backsides of these two. Hypocrisy maybe, or have you forgotten? Justice for Madeleine #McCann
