23 May 2007 was a very important time for the McCanns.

They visited the Fatima shrine that day.

Many other events occurred in the days before and after that date.

Clarence Mitchell flew into Praia da Luz with Gerry McCann.

Gerry McCann told the world's press about a man seen carrying a bundle or something.

The 'Last Photo' was released.

The McCanns flew in Sir Philip Green's private jet to Rome to meet the Pope.

And today the Pope was in Fatima...

ETA 1: Wikipedia on 'Our Lady of Fatima':

Our Lady of Fátima (Portuguese: Nossa Senhora de Fátima, formallly known as Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima European Portuguese: [ˈnɔsɐ sɨˈɲoɾɐ dɨ ˈfatimɐ] Brazilian Portuguese: [ˈnɔsɐ sĩˈȷ̃ɔɾɐ dʒi ˈfatʃimɐ]), is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary based on the famed Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iria, in Fátima, Portugal. The three children were Lúcia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto.

Beginning in the spring of 1917, the children reported apparitions of an Angel, and starting in May of 1917, apparitions of the Virgin Mary, who the children described as the Lady of Fátima. The children reported a prophecy that prayer would lead to an end to the Great War, and that on October 13th of that the Lady would reveal her identity and perform a miracle "so that all may believe."[1] Newspapers reported the prophesies, and many pilgrims began visiting the area. The children's accounts were deeply controversial, drawing intense criticism from both local secular and religious authorities. A provisional administrator briefly took the children into custody, believing the prophecies were politically motivated in opposition to the officially secular First Portuguese Republic established in 1910.[2] The events of October 13th became known as the Miracle of the Sun.

On 13 May 1946, Pope Pius XII granted a canonical coronation to the venerated image enshrined at the Chapel of the Apparitions of Fátima via his apostolic legate, Cardinal Benedetto Aloisi Masella. On 11 November 1954, the same Pontiff later raised the Sanctuary of Fátima to the status of Minor Basilica by his Papal brief Luce Superna.

The reported apparitions at Fátima were officially declared worthy of belief by the Catholic Church, which commemorates the event on the same date. The published memoirs of Lúcia Santos' in the 1930s revealed two secrets that she claimed came from the Virgin while the third secret was to be revealed by the Catholic Church in 1960. The controversial events at Fátima gained fame due partly to elements of the secrets, prophecy and eschatological revelations allegedly related to the Second World War and possibly more global wars in the future, particularly the Virgin's alleged request for the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

ETA 2:

The last truly independent person to see Madeleine alive was the cleaning lady, Fatima, who saw her walking up to the Payne's apartment with the rest of her family at about 1.15pm on Sunday 29 April, 2007.

All roads lead to Rome - and then back from whence they came..

Hey Popey, think I've just had a revelation moment - a vision - a light at the end of a dark tunnel - a sighting of the Mary Madeleine.  I've got me good quality rosary beads from Fatima's souvenir shop and me autographed copy of the Bible.  Oh - and back home an airfix model of Noah's Ark with two of everything brightly painted with acrylic model paints.

Can you make me a saint now - please angel?

Trust me... I will be the resident Fatima expert here.

The Catholic Church spent 80 years being economic with the truth by not telling how the children changed their story.

The children originally said the lady (girl) they saw was wearing a short dress to the knees, wearing ear-rings.

That got airbrushed out of the Fatima history until some UFO researchers (yes) got access to the archives and found the original interviews with the children.
I'm not agreeing with their UFO position (although technically it was smilie  ) but the information they found was extremely interesting and was one of the reasons I walked away from it all.

The eldest child - Lucia - became a nun, then went on to write memoirs about it all including prophesies after the fact.
She was barred from speaking to anyone without approval for most of her life as a nun.
There is all the nonsense (and cover-up) about the third secret (because the church is embarrassed by it, not because it's shocking).

What a mess.

Well, I will not challenge your claim to be the forum resident expert on Fatima, but allow me please to contribute some of my own knowledge on Fatima.

I do not disagree at all with your facts. On the contrary, as I've posted here before, the Roman Catholic Church has a long and disgraceful tradition of deliberate fakery. It would take a massive encyclopaedia to list all this fakery, but among the commonest examples have been the deliberate construction of cunning devices which appear to make statues of the Virgin Mary produce tears and statues of Christ bleedings from His hands. This is planned deception of the Catholic faithful.

Without spending any more time dwelling on the history of Catholic deceptions, fakery, lies, industrial scale abuse of children and cruelties such as the Spanish Inquisition etc., let me make the point once again that the Catholic faith is a false, fake religion which bears very little relation to the teachings of Christ as set out in the Bible.

OK, back to Fatima.

Fatima was the name of one of the daughters of the 'prophet' Mohammed. No-one knows how many children he had; estimates of the number of his wives varies from 11 to 22. He was betrothed to his last wife, Aisha, when she was 6 and he was 50, and by common consent was consummated when she was either 8 or 9 and he was 52 or 53.

So, Fatima was one of his offspring.

Ever since the alleged 'sightings' of the Virgin Mary at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, the Papacy has been working assiduously to use this 'coincidence' with it being the name of one of Mohammed's sprogs to forge a bond of unity between Catholicism and Islam. I predict with confidence that we will hear a great deal more about this in the years to come.

What a strange coincidence that on the very day of the 100th anniversary of what Blue Bag correctly describes as the 'Fatima Fakery', Portugal last night should have won the Eurovision Song Contest.

Here is an article, written on a Catholic website, that I dragged down from the internet this morning to illustrate the above point:

======================================

https://aleteia.org/2017/05/07/the-surprising-connection-between-our-lady-of-fatima-and-islam/

As we approach the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima, one aspect that often goes unnoticed is the subtle connection with Islam. The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the three shepherd children near the city of Fátima, Portugal, a place named after both a Muslim princess and the daughter of Mohammed.

During the 12th century, Christian armies sought to recapture cities in Spain and Portugal that were being occupied by Muslim forces. In this time period, a knight named Gonçalo Hermigues and his companions captured a Muslim princess named Fátima. Some stories say that after her capture, Fátima fell in love with Gonçalo and the two were soon after betrothed. Before their marriage Fátima was baptized into the Catholic faith and took the name Oureana. The Portuguese cities of Fátima and Ourém are said to be named after this Muslim princess.

What’s interesting is that the Muslim princess was named after one of the daughters of Mohammed, Fatimah bint Muhammad, a woman highly revered in Islam. She was given the title, al-Zahra, “shining one,” and Mohammed once said about her, “Thou shalt be the most blessed of all the women in Paradise, after Mary.” (While Muslims do not hold the same beliefs about the Virgin Mary as Catholics, they still hold her with highest regard.)

According to Fr. Miguel Angel Ayuso, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, this connection can be a doorway to dialogue. He noted in a joint prayer meeting in 2014 how, “the Catholic Church recognizes that Muslims honor the Virgin mother of Jesus, Mary, and invoke her with piety…Mary is mentioned various times in the Koran. Respect for her is so evident that when she is mentioned in Islam, it is usual to add ‘Alayha l-salam’ (‘Peace be upon her’)…Mary, a model for Muslims and Christians, is also a model of dialogue.”

Venerable Fulton Sheen draws an interesting connection between Muslims’ reverence for Mary and the daughter of Mohammed and the appearance of Our Lady at Fátima.

“This brings us to our second point, namely, why the Blessed Mother, in this twentieth century, should have revealed herself in the insignificant little village of Fátima, so that to all future generations she would be known as ‘Our Lady of Fátima.’ Since nothing ever happens out of heaven except with a finesse of all details, I believe that the Blessed Virgin chose to be known as “Our Lady of Fátima” as a pledge and a sign of hope to the Moslem people, and as an assurance that they, who show her so much respect, will one day accept her Divine Son, too.”

Surprisingly, besides attracting Christian pilgrims, the shrine at Fátima, Portugal, has also attracted Muslims in great numbers. They go to see the place where the Virgin Mary appeared in a city named after one of their most highly revered women.

In the end, the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fátima called Christians to pray for peace in the world. In an age when violence is so often committed in the name of Islam, how much more should we have recourse to Our Lady of Fátima! Let us continue to work for peace in the world and look to Our Lady to be a bridge between Muslims and Christians, begging her to end the hatred that has caused so much violence around the world.

Those three secrets of Fatima are odd from start to finish. On face value they strike me as doctrinaire.

I get the impression of enormous pressure being applied to the surviving child, Lucia, right into adulthood as a nun about revealing this third secret of Fatima. Tucked away in a convent after such an experience, under the watchful eye of a rather busybody bishop who seems to have applied pressure to reveal the third secret on her deathbed, again smacks of everything I came to know, then despise, about the Catholic church.

The historic split that occurred with the founding of the Byzantine church which spawned the Russian (and of course the Greek ) Orthodox Church as breakaway churches from that of Rome  seemed to rear its sore head within the second secret. The revelations at Fatima were set against the backdrop of the Russian revolution and the destruction of Christian churches/ banning of religious gatherings, so it can certainly be seen as a quasi-political message. This immediately alerts me to the ages of the children, 10, 9 and 7.

It says on the Fatima .org website that the nine year old boy saw all but was not permitted to hear the words. Well, imagine a little kid being shown apocalyptic scenes of hell and fire with bodies writhing in agony amd no soundtrack. That sounds nice and compassionate, doesn't  it?

How many adults could recall all that detail about WW1 ending and another war beginning unless 'penance penance penance' was forthcoming? -all related off pat after such shocking visions/ manifestations? Those children were not sufficiently educated, or of mature enough age to be confronted with holocaust-like images and  articulate any such thing afterwards in my opinion.

Besides, what was the point of it all being secrets? If Our Lady appeared I imagine she would want the entire world to know. Especially as she, being prescient in all things, would have seen the upcoming child abuse scandal from the Vatican cover-up down through bishops and parish priests. Suffer the little children being top of the agenda, I doubt she would want her messages locked away in that particular quarter.

The shepherd children had probably never heard of Russia, let alone been capable of extrapolating the exhortations to that troubled nation to turn its face toward Marian devotion. The idea that this message was ever going to reach the ears of the newly emerging Communist leaders via three ill-educated, Portuguese-speaking child-shepherds, one of whom had the sound track turned off, is preposterous.

And in the end, isn't  it just like the RC hierarchy to make it all about them? A message stored away in dusty vaults, so that after the attempted assassination on Pope John Paul they could claim "It was written".

The third secret as written can't be retrofitted to the John Paul II assassination attempt.
The church tried in 2000 but it's nonsense.
In fact the commentary released along with the secret in 2000 is downright deceitful.
And THAT was down to Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict).

I agree.

I even recall the idea being floated on at least one of the major news stations, presumably to embed it in people's minds while they were receptive following the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II.

The Emperor Constantine was canny enough to realise the unifying advantages in adopting Christianity as the trans-imperial religion. His mother, meanwhile,  had a coincidental "spiritual awakening" and made a pilgimage to Jerusalem, returning with the first in a long tradition of holy relics.

Take an old paradigm, tweak it a bit. And voilà. A trans-global religion, all inclusive. What a wizard wheeze. All of the various deities to co-exist for a period of time to show liberalism. Just like the Romans. You can just imagine the bilderbergers putting the finishing touches and congratulating themselves on a plan so sophisticated the plebs won't rumble it.

Re Tony's post above, I can easily see the progression he suggests, all under the umbrella of ecumenism. A Marian message compatible with two world religions. Genius. The drip drip rhetoric makes sense under this theory, not least Theresa May's bizarre declaration that aspects of sharia law could be beneficial. And with regard to former Archbishop Rowan Williams who also proposed considering acceptance of a fait accompli re the existence of sharia courts in certain communities. Planting seeds.

How much more malleable people are when occupied with religious observance, whether it be call to prayer X5 per day, or maybe lauds, matins, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers and compline. Perhaps a new Council of Trent could draw up a hybrid.

All in the name of nwo er, ecumenism.

I'm forever in awe of Mirage's posts.

I'm not a Catholic but attended the church for about a year. I left - fled would be a better word - when the local priest (who was previously a Methodist) gave a sermon on anti abortion and it was also at a time when the Catholic church was hit by so many child abuse headlines (locally, nationally and internationally) concerning  institutional child abuse.

I'm not a particularly well read, well educated person. I didn't study theology.

As an ordinary person I went on to read about the Catholic church and what I read didn't please me, in fact it confirmed my gut reluctance after exploring all possibility to become part of this particular faith.

The most damning thing I read as an ordinary person was the formation of the Roman Catholic faith illustrated by the Borgia family.

I always seek to have faith.

At my age I've come to understand that any organized religion is to be questioned.

Don't knock it!

From my experience the averagely educated, even uneducated, are far more down to earth and wise than the certificated.  Just because someone can learn parrot fashion doesn't mean they have intelligence or even common sense.

The McCanns themselves are testament to that simple fact.

Awesome Mirage, awesome!! +1

+1 aquila, you echo many of my thoughts, thank you for your post.
You're welcome. It only takes a little courage to tell the truth.
