I'm new here and have not read all the posts yet so apologies if this has been discussed already.
When my child was young, there was a medicine bought over the counter at pharmacy with paracetamol in called Medised. Whatever else was in it, this made the child drousy and helped them to sleep through the illness. Perhaps was an antihistamine. I remember the chemist was always thorough when selling it, making sure people knew the correct dosage to give, as it was effective at inducing sleep. I started using it myself to sleep after a botched operation kept me awake at night. Strong stuff. I believe it now is only sold via prescription or is not sold for such young children. Sorry, not too sure, will look into it, but was readily available three years ago.
That was the first thing that came to my mind the day Madeleine was declared missing. I cannot imagine any mother getting three such young children to sleep, all at the same time, so early on a bright summer evening. Life just doesnt go according to plan that often, night after night, on holiday. And kids wake up often, usually only requiring a little word of comfort or a stroke on their forehead and off to sleep again they go. But you cant do that if you are away in a restaurant many yards from home. So they really had to have sedated these kids to be sure they would not wake up. Calpol is not a sedative, simply a painkiller.
The other thing that strikes me is the financial aspect. Ok, some say a cheap, out of season break in a small apartment is not befitting of two doctors of their income. But hang on. She was not working, or on maternity leave, which is not full salary for long. And he would be the main breadwinner for a family of five. With a large house to pay for. I dont know for sure what he earned, but i bet it was less than 150K p.a. And before the kids came along, they were no doubt used to a certain standard of living. Kids tend to drain us of money. I think the finances have a lot to do with this case.
Does anybody agree?

Medised is still available, it is pretty good stuff.

I was looking at apartments for rent at ocean club the other night. During the months of Apr/May a two bed apartment is pretty cheap to rent for a week, IIRC £300-£500. Flight to Faro at the same time can be purchased for as little as £60ish from easyjet. A family of five could easily travel and stay 7 nights at the Ocean Club for under a grand.

Hi and welcome Poppydog 
My childminder recommended Medised for giving to infants before flying, saying it was a pre-med (?) and made kids so drowsy it was great for lessening the effects of flying kids can find distressing.
I bought some 'just in case' but didn't try it because happily my two were so excited to be going on a plane they really enjoyed the flights.

Dont know about medised but Calpol has sedative properties (sleepiness and drowsiness) if excess amount is taken.

If it works for noisy flights, it must be an absolute doddle for getting tots off to sleep in their comfortable beds when they are on holiday. Especially if the tots don't want to bed down in broad daylight and the parents want to get out for a bit of a shindig and partake of a little vino.
One's wife is going to be terribly miffed when one tells her that we could have used such substances years ago when our own children would not go to sleep. Of course we were in the fortunate position of being able to trust and rely on the same young ladies who looked after our children in the daytime to look after the children at night.
One has never understood why the Tapas 9 were confident enough to allow their children to be taken swimming or sailing during the daytime by the nannies, but they did not trust them to baby-sit in their apartments at night whilst they dined and made merry at the Tapas bar.

Antihistamines are potentially very dangerous. I am covered in a red itchy rash which I have deduced is from changing to Surf "Small & Mighty". I have just been to Tesco and bought Benadryl. I thought I would buy Benadryl instead of Zirtek as I nearly died a few years ago after taking Zirtec whilst in Spain which caused a serious internal bleed.
I thought Benadryl might be safer but just read this

So I've decided I will carry on itching as I am not going to chance it. An overdose of any medication containing this might be fatal I should imagine especially in a child as it could cause bleeding.

Thats what i mean, the holiday was certainly not a lavish affair, not when you consider the size of their family home and lifestyle. I feel sure the denial of credit cards and witholding of bank details are to hide some financial 'embarrassments'
I certainly think its possible to accidentally cause a child harm with Medised.

The pertinent point is: the medical records and financial records were denied by authorities and not mccanns. Is that the normal practice of those authorities not to divulge /patients/clients information under law of confidentiality especially if requests came from outside UK even if police authorities?
If the denial had got to with with breach of confidentiality, applicable to all, and not particularly to mccanns, then no issue. However, if denied because of instructions from third party like for example (mccanns, very unlikely), or Politicians (also unlikely) that this is a different ball game altogether. I'm inclined to think it's a breach of confidentiality issue and not because they were mccanns.

Never heard about medised, but when my children were younger, there was only on one occasion I went to the doctor for prescribed medicine for the flight. Whatever the doctor gave, to be taken an hour or so before flight, was good enough to stop my little daughter from vomiting, but didnt send her to slumberland; she remained awake and alert throughout.
