The fund’s directors said: “Income from the book has significantly improved the position.

"This will continue as a result of publication in other countries and the release of the paperback.”

Official accounts show the bestseller which came out in May 2011 netted £738,487 after tax.

Madeleine’s Fund hit £1.8million shortly after the three-year-old vanished from her family’s holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

But by 2011, after four years of ­fruitless searching, it had dwindled to £125,000.

Kate and husband Gerry, both 44, from Rothley, Leicestershire, feared they might be unable to carry on the hunt.

But official papers filed with Companies House show all Kate’s book cash went to the fund.

And after a large percentage was spent on the continuing search and costly ad campaigns the remaining total now stands at £474,867.

The fund report revealed it was no longer paying private investigators in Portugal after Scotland Yard announced a major cold case review.

The McCanns hope this will lead to Portuguese authorities reopening their inquiries.

The report added: “The fund scaled back independent efforts to avoid duplication.

“It maintains sizeable resources so the search can be resumed quickly should the review not lead to the reopening of the case in Portugal.”

Timing is to deflect the "out of court negotiation" in Portugal.

Preparing the public for where the rest of the Fund will eventually be used for, then blaming Amaral for preventing the search.

Just wait for their ugliness to rear its head again.

$64M question: why did they pander to the Mccanns?

Scepticism regarding to the uses and abuses of the fund, and figures which don't sound plausible, is being read and noted by "them over there" and so we have a bit of spin popping out to stem uncomfortable questions. Scepticism will continue unless ALL the details, every last penny spent and the breakdown of such, is released into the public domain to prove it has been wisely and prudently spent. Apart from early donations by the rich, and the Express payout, it has all come from innocent members of the public. This case has been made "public property" by dint of publicity and awareness sought by the McCanns themselves, and the sheer square mileage of newsprint and bandwidth devoted to the case, and whilst the Taxpayers are funding the review, the public have a degree of ownership. And if the Mc's don't like that fact, they should be paying for it out of their own earnings.

So, if you're listening out there, how about it? Open up the books properly and show us there is nothing to hide. We'll get on with analysing the accounts while you pop back to PDL for the reconstruction. Deal?

Book advance which was said to be large amount, does that count as extra or come out of sales? What about the £125,000 'hush' money that was kept secret paid by News of the World as an apology. Are these in the accounts...........just wondering, do they show in the accounts.

Thanks for the reminder of the £125k, had forgotten that. I have a niggling feeling that by not disclosing how the donations break down (I refer to the large sums, say over £1k) and what has been used for "supporting the family", there can only be a metaphorical dowsing the flames of suspicion with a few gallons of petrol! We were promised "total transparency" on more than one occasion. What we have in fact falls so far short it's not even on the spreadsheet.

Now, it might not be deemed improper for a compensation to Kate over the printing of her diaries be used by the family as they see fit. However, if this money has been used for personal expenditure, it would be only right and proper for the McCann's to remove the proviso of the fund to provide support to the family. With a Consultants wage AND £125k there can be no justifiable reason to have the option of using the fund for ANYTHING other than a serious search operation.

Yet again, various things fail to hang together in a way which has the appearance of complete propriety.

The wording of the article surely allows for the implication that had the Fund been stronger, had old aged pensioners and children been more generous to this deserving cause, Kate would have simply pocketed the cash.

If they are begging for more donation with that leak they can dream on.

But something good has come out of this (source to team Mccanns with quotes and all) - Team Amaral can note they publicly concede they made money and will make more - to be taken into consideration when making their compensation claim.

Don't forget the paperback came out a year after the original book with an additional chapter as an update. The sales from this would be in the next set of accounts I presume.

I don't get it. Where in the new financial statement on the other thread does it say that 1 million has been put in the funds accounts? Could someone explain to me?

Putting so much money into the fund has certainly not taken her even one inch nearer to finding Madeleine but she has undoubtedly enriched several solicitor's coffers.

The Merchandising and Campaign costs seem excessively high for the non result we have seen.

Have anyone seen their campaign any where?

If they were desperate or serious about their search you would have thought they would spend money on printing T-shirts and wearing them everywhere, particularly to football matches they attended. What better way to engage a hugh crowd!

Just been looking at accounts from 2009 - 2012 and it is not at all discernible, apart from the recent book amount, if the following amounts have been included :

£500k Express Group
£125k NoW payout
£500k Sun serialisation

The £700k (approx) from book sales must be considered separate from serialisation payment.

So, there is a potential £1,125,000 that has not been distinguished from donations via the website, fundraisers (remember the event at Kensington Roof Gardens?) and various marathons.

We have also no idea what, if any, fee the Mc's got for TV appearances, especially Oprah.

I hope someone more analytical or with a better memory can help out, but on the surface of it I'm guessing at roughly £500k PER ANNUM not being included.

Yet another coincidence, we have all these stories about the million pounds from the book in our papers, the day after the news about the trial being suspended only appeared in Portuguese papers The accounts were available a few days ago, and voila they appear today in our papers......hmmm.

This lady was so desperate for a family that she had not just one but 3 IVF births.

This is the lady that felt it was ok to leave these 3 babies all under the age of 4 home alone in a foreign apartment wit doors ajar onto the street whilst she and her 'so into themselves' buddies went out for the evening, 5 evenings in a row.

It is BULL. makes no sense whatsoever that a group of medical professionals and their partners numbers nine in all would holiday and not not take it int urns to babysit the minors, considering all the minors were under 4 years of age. What makes less sence is saintly Kate comments that she had no idea about Paedophilia before the magical dissapearance of her daugher.

Kate McCann was no high rise single mother attempting to get by, she was a medical doctor. So how was it that Kate Mc Cann practiced her duties without any knowledge of tHe fact that paedophilia is rife in our society. Who were her clients and why have we not had any of them come online to share their disgust that Kate Mc Cann claims that she was ignorant or this subject prior the the dissapaearnce of her daughter.

I have said from June 2007, Kate McCann was not in a fit state to care for those children........that was no holiday, from everything I have read back then , and everything I see today, I am still of the belief that the Tapas Group were in Priaia for a conference paid for by a pharmacuetical company, and yes it is my befief that it all links to New Labour of the days secret agenda to privatise the NHS. Clarence Mitchell's appearance on the scene early on gives clarity to my belief.

I have not read Kate McCann's book, I have principles and those principles would never allow me to financially contribute to anyting that could possibly be intended to boster those who get in the way of the fight to put a stop to the abuse of minors all over the globe.

But I gather that Kate had no problem with titallating to the extent that she went to great lenghts to describe what she imagined her daughter to be going through...........SICK. sounds like a book that paedo's all over the globe will be investing in. No amount of relevations about Saville and his cahoots is going to change the lives of children in the care system today, or change the pattern of abuse.

The reason that children in the care system have been abused, and the reason that they will go on being abused, is that WE as a society are not prepared to do anything other than rant on a screen. There is nothing we can do about the past, the Savile's of this world are not about to teach us any lessons about our duty or care for our fellow man.

If we really care about the unfortunate children in the care system today, we can make a difference, and we can stop any further abuse of the children without a voice. Forget all these charities that claim to be advocates for children, they are no such thing. If you really want to make a difference make it your business to find out what childrens homes are in your area, go visit them, interact with the children there is no law that can stop you from doing so, amd in dong so you can become a barrier to the predators who act with impunity, furthermore if you have pennies to spare, put them in the coffers of your local community clubs who are none profit making and whose workers work for free in order to give a little back to the community. That is what I call charity not the like of Gift Aid which is a corporate enterprise whose funder has become a multi millonaire on the back of HMRC'c tax system whereby those whose income raises above a certain level, dump the excess to Gift aid to avoid higher taxes...it is all a big con

I read the article as follows: you people have donated 1.8 million. That's gone. They've now made 1 million with their bewk. They're not searching anymore, as Scotland Yard is doing that for them [at your tax-payers' money]. So there's plenty in their coffers and there's no need for donations anymore.

James Murray's article gets off to a good start with a sentence which does not make sense. It should say that the fund would have gone into the red "if her mother Kate McCann had not written......"

Thank goodness Kate's novel kept the wolf from the door!

Then he says that there is £474,867 in the bank when the figure is actually £528,267 - ah well, what's a difference of £53,400 among friends?

It would certainly pay for a load of wristbands and other tat!

When everyone has decided there is nothing more to be done, that 474k can legitimately, and legally, be given to the McCanns. The article of association allow it.

Not bad at all, when there is future income coming in as well....

Err....but, what about legal cost? Who is going to pay that?
An anonymous benefactor too ashamed to reveal his name?

Also, what about damages and compensation under negotiation? Who is paying that? Same anonymous benefactor?
