Madeleine vanished in May 2007

The trio were given “arguido” or suspect status in July last year which allowed Portuguese detectives to question them intensively about their movements around the time that Madeleine vanished in May 2007.

Details of those interviews have now been analysed by Scotland Yard officers.

Under Portuguese law the arguido status lasts for only eight months but can be extended, although that is not common.

If no formal accusations can be made, investigations are shelved, which automatically removes the arguido status.

With an April deadline approaching, the Yard is carefully considering its next move. Senior Portuguese police officers recently met British officials in Portugal for an update on what the Yard team seeks to do and how long it will take.

If no formal accusations can be made, investigations are shelved

Although there are no plans to drop the four-year £10million Operation Grange investigation, led by Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall, the meeting focused on what new information has come to light and what more needs to be done.

It is understood that part of the discussion was about DNA samples taken from the Ocean Club holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve where Madeleine was staying with her family.

The trio waiting to have their arguido status lifted are former Ocean Club driver Jose Carlos da Silva, jobless schizophrenic Paulo Jorge Ribeiro and Ricardo Jorge, who was just 16 at the time Madeleine vanished.

They have all strenuously denied knowing anything about her disappearance.

'Not offering a running commentary'?

But here we have five deliberate leaks, passed to the Sunday Express no doubt by 'a source close to the enquiry', and regurgitated by the ever faithful lapdog, James Murray, who has IMO written more rubbish about this case than anybody except Rupert Murdoch's journalists

Dr Martin Roberts: "The evidence is that these are the pjyamas Madeleine wore on holiday in Praia da Luz. They were photographed and the photo handed to a press agency, who released it on 8 May, as the search for Madeleine continued. The McCanns held up these same pyjamas at two press conferences on 5 & 7June 2007. How could Madeleine have been abducted?"

Amelie McCann (aged 2): "Maddie's jammies!".

In McCann-speak, I seem to recall that have arguido status expire translates to 'Being cleared by the police of having any involvement in M's disappearance'

I have a slightly different take on what the Express are printing, they had to pay a pretty penny to the McCanns and others.
The story the other day about the rumbling's of discontent regarding the cost and dedicated team assigned to the McCann case was from the Star, part of the Express group.
Wasn't it the Express group who paid out half million  to a lord Archer only to recoup it at a later date plus interest.

Just observation's.

If I am not mistaken, not only the arguido status, but also the investigation has time limits. That means that, if there is no good reason to extend this period, when the investigation is being shelved again "all" files have to made public again. I think OG and TM must be bricking stones (is that the expression?) of what will be in the public domain again.
I see D notices coming up .....

Although Joana Morais responded to the D-Notice in respect of the Evening Standard article naming Henry Exton (iirc) back in 2009, there was no legal basis for her doing so, as they are only servable in the UK.

I believe there was some UK input to the PJ about what should be withheld from the original PJ file release, specifically about names and interviews with ‘innocents’, but at the end of the day, technically, the PJ can release whatever they like, although of course political pressure may well be applied through the back door.

Hopefully, interference is gradually becoming more and more difficult with every day and every revelation that is coming to the surface about political cover-ups and although they could D-notice the MSM over here, a concerted Facebook campaign could leave the PTB with more egg on their faces than if they just keep out of the matter.

P.S.
‘shitting bricks’ I believe is the expression you were after!

I think you'll find the PJ HAVE to 'release' the 'files' of a 'shelved/re-shelved' investigation.

It's their LAW.

ps: Anyone know how Mr Birch is 'getting on' with his renewed 'investigation' in Portugal?
