Can we rule out the burglar took her?
Here's an example of the detailed information a three year old can provide the police about a burglar:

In the comments section SueCB's post has 222 likes - I happen to agree with the comment too. More detail in the little girl's picture than the original eggman one.

Have you seen this man? Police looking for burglar release 'e-fit' drawn by three-year-old - and somehow he's still at large
Evelyn Bardgett, aged three, wanted to help police catch the criminals
Burglars broke into her house at night as she and her parents slept
Police told her the picture she drew would 'make a good e-fit'
Gang used a spade to open a window and then stole an iPad and a wallet
SueCB, Stuttgart, Germany, about 18 hours ago
the only difference between this picture and the Portuguese police's ,when looking for Maddie, is this one has more features.

Oh great!!
If The Sun gets hold of this we'll be hearing stories of Operation Grange wanting to interview a man resembling him who was lurking outside the McCann apartment on May 3rd 2007. They've printed worse or equally ludicrous stories

"Used a spade to open a window . . .
Stole an iPad and a wallet. . ."
In other words, he was a burglar.
Gained entry, leaving a forensic trace which enabled people to determine the instrument involved
Removed items, enabling the police to determine that it was a crime of acquisition
As opposed to
No intrument, no point of entry, no evidence of being there, no point of exit, nothing of value taken, and no witnesses, not even a three year old.

And it seems the parents didn't rip the cover off their dear little girl's sticker book to write out a timeline.

They took valuable things, not the three-year girl.
That's what burglars do - they take valuables not little girl !
And they leave behind an array of evidence of break in etc.....
And three year old can describe and tell you things about them....not slept through it...
