This translates as "named suspect", "formal suspect" or "person of interest".
Under Portuguese law it would no longer be possible to declare someone a person of interest beyond 3 May, which will be 15 years since Madeleine was reported missing.
It appears I was on the right track about the misinterpretation of the phrase 'statute of limitation', it relates to the suspect alone, not the duration of a criminal investigation. So, if per chance a body is found and identified and all evidence leads to John Doe, then the criminal case/investigation will continue or be re-opened.
There is clear mischief going on here. The Portuguese authorities know the true situation better than anyone, the police thoroughly investigated the case, the case which took a slightly different turn when the case coordinator, Gonçalo Amaral, was removed. They know the evidence, they have it all documented on file - as we all know and acknowledge. Fifteen years down the line and still the public are being fed deception, anything to lead away from the true suspects .... Gerry and Kate McCann.
If there be even an element of truth in this latest revelation, the McCanns would be screaming from the rooftop of Roafley Towers - if they haven't already sold it to cover 'searching' costs!
Funny how all this transpires so close to the looming anniversary innit .

Madeleine McCann's parents have released a statement after convicted child abuser Christian B was named an official suspect in the girl's disappearance.
The statement signed "Kate & Gerry" says: "We welcome the news that the Portuguese authorities have declared a German man an 'arguido' in relation to the disappearance of our beloved daughter Madeleine.
"This reflects progress in the investigation, being conducted by the Portuguese, German and British authorities. We are kept informed of developments by the Metropolitan Police.
"It is important to note the 'arguido' has not yet been charged with any specific crime related to Madeleine's disappearance.
"Even though the possibility may be slim, we have not given up hope that Madeleine is still alive and we will be reunited with her."
The Portuguese prosecutor's office confirmed "a defendant was appointed this Wednesday".
The statement comes a day after prosecutors in the the Algarve city of Faro did not name Christian B, but said a person was made an "arguido" by German authorities at the request of Portugal's public prosecution service.
Arguido translates as "named suspect" or "formal suspect".
In Portuguese law, an arguido status can be a preliminary move ahead of an arrest being made or charges brought.
Christian B was identified as a murder suspect in the case of Madeleine by German prosecutors in June 2020, but he has not been charged since then.

Investigators believe the convicted sex offender killed Madeleine, then three, after abducting her from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in May 2007.
The move by Portuguese authorities could allow the suspect, who is in prison in Germany, to be transferred to the Algarve for formal questioning.
The German newspaper Bild reported that Christian B's lawyer, Friedrich Fuelscher, said the Portuguese decision appeared to be a "procedural trick".
Reports suggested the move could be linked to the country's statute of limitations, which does not generally allow crimes which carry a maximum prison sentence to be prosecuted more than 15 years after they were committed.
This would mean the suspect, named Christian B in Germany due to the country's strict privacy laws, could no longer be charged in Portugal after 3 May.
Christian B is serving a seven-year sentence in Germany for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old US woman in Praia da Luz.
A federal court in Karlsruhe, a city in south-west Germany, rejected an appeal against the conviction in November 2020.
The Metropolitan Police continue to treat Madeleine's disappearance as a missing persons inquiry.

Re: Christian Brueckner: To be or not to be
no, there are different sols, the primary is on the case itself, max is 15 years, if you did not have a suspect in that time, it will not be possible to get someone before a court of law.
the secondary sol starts from the moment somebody is made into arguido, and as peter posted earlier today, that sol ends after 7.5 years.
so the giving of the arguido status to cb as we have to believe from the news yesterday has a sol of 7.5 years.
but as i earlier found, if this cb is set free of his arguido status and not charged and prosecuted, the case will go back to the primary sol of the case itself.
the problem is, there is always details, details that could be small holes, that could make it possible to keep a case open. usual a high persona who has to make a case into somethging very important to solve or something like that.
or the make an arguido before the primary sol is reached, like portugal choose to do.
the missing person part itself will never have to be closed, but all criminal elements that are going bound to that missing have sol's in portugal. missing is not a crime, so that is usually handled under de assisting who needs assisting part of the police work.
but a sol means, if they find a body of madeleine mccann over say 20 years, they could investigate it, but not to bring a person before the courts to pay for it. sol is just end of justice. you can no longer bring someone to account for a crime.
and body finds in cases of missing persons are part of assisting the public, the body needs at least identification and a direction to a legal ans social accepted place of resting. there will be at least some forensic work be done, because cause of death is an legal part of a death certificate.
it is to the people of portugal themselves, to vote and ask for people that could change laws with sol in it, that is a political obligation. their history is different from ours and yours probably, it is not for us to change these things. we in the netherlands had our sol of 18 years in murder cases, only gone from the start of 2006, all cases that had not reached their legal sol, would loose their sol. all case that already had reached their sol would keep it.
in the case of nicky verstappen there was also a bit of a trick, but over here reopening of the investigation, without even a suspect was enough. becauase that investigation was started just in time, it made it possible to get the perp and bring him before the courts.
a bit less personal than in portugal. and they tell from portugal the investigation was still active at the moment, so it looks like it, that in itself would not be enough, so they had to choose, and choose to make cb an arguido.
as it stands per news they also have started questioning him in germany, but it will still be a bit of a hassle to make it into a court case in portugal, the rules are not against it, but germany said per der hans they want him in a german court. so the questioning for now is to be expected like the rogatories were done in the uk in 2008.
a lot of countries have already rules and convenants in place to make it possible to sit out a jail time in the country of origin.
but we only have the first step into a possible persecution started, he is still not charged. and it is only still an investigation, still a long road to the court.

Maddie suspect “formally identified”

Christian Brückner has still not been formally questioned, or charged
Portuguese prosecutors have ‘formally identified’ convicted German sex offender Christian Brückner as a suspect (arguido) in the disappearance of toddler Madeleine McCann from a holiday apartment in the Algarve 15 years ago.
International media stories point out this is the first time Portuguese prosecutors have identified an official suspect in the case since the missing child’s parents Kate and Gerry were briefly named suspects in 2007.
Brückner’s name was not actually mentioned in the Portuguese statement, which alluded simply to ‘a suspect’ identified on request of authorities in Germany.
German authorities told the world they had their man back in 2020 – they simply did not have ‘concrete evidence’.
Says Reuters, reasons that have “led Portuguese prosecutors to identify a suspect now are not clear, but it could be related to Portugal’s 15-year statute of limitations for crimes with a maximum prison sentence of 10 years or more”.
Brückner is serving jail time in Germany and has still not been formally questioned by German police, nor charged in relation to Madeleine’s disappearance.
His lawyer and Brückner himself have consistently denied involvement, suggesting the whole theory is based on testimony from a convicted people-smuggler.

The McCanns are now delighted that a "formal suspect" has been identified.
At Leveson they insisted, under oath, that "arguido' status, when applied to THEM did not mean Formal Suspect.
Only to Murat and Brückner , obviously

So now we have German authorities requesting Portugal to arguido'arize a German?!?
This is getting sillier by the day - no surprises there, quite normal on the eve of an anniversary only this time round even more confusing.
We have a mix of Operation Grange winding-down, a German man sitting in a German prison said to be the 'prime suspect' in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann (read abduction/kidnap/murder) and now .... the Portuguese authorities requested by German authorities for a German citizen to be given arguido status.
What a tangled web they weave ....

It may be in the interest of the Portuguese to make this patsy an arguido. The British and the Germans are making a mockery of the Portuguese justice system with their patsy and their crazy claims.
Now that CB is officially an arguido in Portugal, can he be formally questioned and investigated there? If so, the Portuguese could eliminate him once and for all. What then for the Germans? It is not even their case?

I doubt that 'official' statement was even written by Kate or Gerry McCann - one of their little helpers or the geek who keeps that useless website live, just about.
Seriously, would one or both McCann be slash grateful that a suspect has been named, presumed to be a man suspected of abducting and murdering their precious daughter.
That aside, they are not paying attention. Operation Grange sit pretty thinking Madeleine is a missing person (true technically). was abducted but anyway, they are finally preparing to close their investigation/inquiry/ probe - call it what you will. The Portuguese authorities have been off the scene since the summer of 2008 when their investigation was archived. The German authorities have been bleating on about Christian Brueckner being 'the prime suspect' for two years, at least publicly.
Rollox it is!

Madeleine McCann's parents release statement after Christian B made official suspect over disappearance
Kate and Gerry McCann have said they welcome the news there has been progress in the investigation and still hold out hope that they will be reunited with their daughter.
Tom Gillespie
News reporter @TomGillespie1
Saturday 23 April 2022 09:32, UK
Madeleine McCann's parents have said they welcome the news that convicted child abuser Christian B has been named an official suspect in the case of their daughter's disappearance.
In a statement signed "Kate & Gerry", the couple also said they hold out hope that Madeleine is still alive despite German police treating the case as a murder investigation.
Christian B is suspected of killing Madeleine, who was three at the time of her disappearance, after allegedly abducting her from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.
Kate and Gerry McCann's statement reads: "We welcome the news that the Portuguese authorities have declared a German man an 'arguido' in relation to the disappearance of our beloved daughter Madeleine.
The statement comes a day after prosecutors in the Algarve city of Faro, without naming Christian B, said a person was made an "arguido" by German authorities at the request of Portugal's public prosecution service.
Arguido translates as "named suspect" or "formal suspect".
In Portuguese law, arguido status can be a preliminary move ahead of an arrest being made or charges brought.
However, the decision is said to have been prompted by the 15-year limit for prosecuting serious crimes in Portugal, with authorities looking to "keep their options open".
The statute of limitations would have meant Christian B could no longer be charged in the country after 3 May.
German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters told Sky News the move was "apparently only for formal reasons, to prevent a statute of limitations in Portugal".
Analysis: Christian B isn't the first official suspect in disappearance - but may be the last
A Portuguese source added: "The legal grounds for making [Christian B] an arguido include the fact that he allegedly confessed to a friend he had snatched Madeleine and mobile phone records placed him in Praia da Luz the night she vanished."
Christian B, whose surname is not given due to Germany's strict privacy laws, stayed silent after being informed he was a formal suspect and declined to be questioned, according to the source.
The suspect, who is in his 40s, travelled between Praia da Luz and Germany in a VW camper van for several years before Madeleine vanished and previously said he survived by dealing drugs.
It is understood German investigators are focusing their forensic work on the vehicle.
Christian B became a suspect after allegedly confessing to kidnapping Madeleine while sitting in a German bar on the 10th anniversary of her abduction.
He is currently serving a seven-year sentence in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in 2005 in the same town where Madeleine went missing two years later.
A federal court in Karlsruhe, a city in southwest Germany, rejected an appeal against the conviction in November 2020.
In 1994, Christian B was convicted in Germany of sexual abuse of a child, attempted sexual abuse of a child, and carrying out sexual acts in front of a child.
Portuguese authorities insisted earlier this month that they would continue to investigate Madeleine's disappearance despite reports that Scotland Yard was planning to end its probe after 11 years.
The Metropolitan Police continue to treat Madeleine's disappearance as a missing persons inquiry.
