Netflix probes Madeleine McCann disappearance in new documentary - but parents Kate and Gerry want 'NOTHING to do' with controversial film
EXCLUSIVE: Madeleine documentary expected to be streamed this month
Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann have refused to take part in the show
Maddie vanished from an apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in May 2007

Netflix has made a new documentary about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann which is due to be screened this month with the Oscar winning streaming service already predicting it will be a huge global success, MailOnline can reveal.Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry have refused to take part in the show despite numerous requests from producers Pulse Films over the past 18 months.
The couple’s ‘Tapas Seven’ holiday pals and their former spokesperson and close friend Clarence Mitchell have also snubbed the venture, saying: ‘We want nothing to do with it.’
But Netflix - which scooped three awards at last month’s Oscars for Roma, which follows the life of a live-in housekeeper of a middle-class family in Mexico City - is boasting it has ‘riveting’ new interviews with key investigators as the 12th anniversary of the world’s most famous missing child cases approaches.
A source close to the movie makers said today: ‘Everyone everywhere is fascinated by the Maddie story. We would have welcomed the opportunity of working with the McCanns directly but they informed us they couldn’t and wouldn’t consider taking part while a police investigation is into their daughter’s abduction is ongoing.
‘But we have interesting new interviews with people close to the inquiry and we believe we can give justice to this unbelievably tragic story.’
Three-year-old Maddie vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal’s Praia da Luz in May 2007 while her parents were dining with pals in a nearby tapas restaurant. Maddie had been left sleeping alone with her younger twin siblings Sean and Amelie with regular half hourly checks being made on the children.
Renowned cardiologist Gerry and former GP Kate, both 50, from Rothley, Leicestershire, cling onto a glimmer of hope their eldest child could still be found alive.
It is not yet known if the documentary, which has cost up to a reported £20 million, will be a one off, a two parter or as originally intended an eight part series.
A friend of the McCann’s said: ‘We understand it is a serialised drama but neither Kate, Gerry nor their holiday friends and main players have co-opertated in any shape or form. And we have no idea who the actors are. We believe it is coming out very soon, within the next two weeks and before the next anniversary.
‘Netflix had been hoping to screen it last year but the project took them a lot longer than expected. They had been wanting to string it out over eight episodes but it may now be a one or two parter.’
An insider at Pulse Films said: ‘Netflix are hoping it will be a massive hit.’
It is not known if retired Portuguese detective Goncalo Amaral, who is still embroiled in a long running bitter libel battle with the McCanns, has agreed to take part. In his best seller book ‘The Truth of the Lie’ he accuses Maddie’s parents - who were once suspects in their daughter’s disappearance - of faking her kidnap after she accidentally died in the holiday flat.
The McCann pal: ‘The family understand Mr Amaral and Portuguese police officers have been approached. Their lawyers will be keeping watch for any potentially libellous material.’
The search for Maddie - who was just nine days away from her fourth birthday - has became the most high-profile missing person investigation in history. The youngster’s face in iconic pictures is recognisable around the world.
Netflix has had a string of successful true crime documentaries including hit documentary Making A Murderer on wrongly jailed American student Amanda Knox for British student Meredith Kercher’s murder.
And the streaming service scooped three gongs at the Oscars for Best Director for Roma, Best Cinematography and Foreign Language Film while being nominated for Best Picture.
The Maddie movie - the title of which is being kept a closely guarded secret - will examine the high profile case and interview key figures and investigators. Film makers have made several trips to the family’s village to speak to villagers and have also interviewed journalists who have been covering the story over the years.
It will be screened as Scotland Yard wait to find out from the Home Office if they will be granted extra public funding to continue their painstaking search for the missing girl.
The McCann's have been given fresh hope, as police request more money, saying: 'They’ve given us belief there is still work left to be done.'
The latest funding is due to run out within weeks at the end of the current financial year and the force’s request for extra money will now be carefully considered. Funding through Special Grants has already cost the British taxpayer a massive £11.75 million.
A Home Office spokesperson said: 'We have received and are considering a request from the MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) to extend funding for Operation Grange until the end of March 2020.'
The couple’s spokesperson Mr Mitchell told MailOnline: 'Kate and Gerry are extremely grateful to the Metropolitan Police for making a new funding application and whilst they know it is not guaranteed they are hoping it will be approved. It shows that officers are still doing everything they can to get a resolution after all this time. And it gives them hope that one day they may finally find out what happened to their daughter.
‘It gives them belief there is still work left to be done.'
Mr Mitchell said eminent heart doctor Gerry and Kate, now a medical worker, will never give up looking for their daughter. She would now be aged 15, nearly 16 .
He declined to discuss the Netflix project.
MailOnline has contacted Netflix for comment.

The title of this artcile is very old news - it was reported a long time ago. As for the proposed timing of the Netflix documentary - seeing is believing.

So now Two Police Forces are singing from the same Hymn sheet, but not singing the same Hymn!
There is No way on earth the parents of Madeleine McCann dare to take part in any further Film narratives, as there is enough conflicts of what was, wasn't spoken about this case, especially in regard to any Not to disclose agreements, Tapas 7/9!
Now the Metropolitan Police Service have a seemingly Twelve Monthly standing Order arrangement in place in regard to funding of operation Grange!
Perhaps Operation Grange could divulge the code numbers where people in UK could enter the Council Tax paid by the Metropolitan Police service on their behalf?

I'm wondering what will be "controversial" about this film, and hoping it will be challenging the MSM line.
I'm also delighted the parents will not be contributing.

Re: Netflix probes Madeleine McCann disappearance in new documentary
Who are the investigators?
Corrupt Private investigors Metodo 3 who amongst other things were caught bribing witnesses to say they had seen Madeleine in Morocco?
Dave Edgar and Arthur Crowley who set up the bogus Alphaig company?
Who else was interviewed? Why are they not named?
I don't beleive that the McCanns had nothing to do with this, if that's what they wanted they could easily have pulled the plug on this production. After all, according to them a young girl is still missing and being searched for.

There lies the clue ^^^ !
This has all the markings of the Australian January 2017 grande exposé, the exclusive documentary that threatened new evidence and whatever else with an unbelievable hint of poor editing. Just going over the same ground - Colin Sutton, Mark Williams-Thomas, David Barclay etc etc etc
Seriously, what can any of these fringe documentary makers and podcasters have to offer this case that hasn't been done before?
CMoMM, this is where it's at - no ulterior motives, no money making ventures, no capitalizing in any way on the disappearance of a three year old child.
All this hype and excitement about something new making a difference I fear is wishful thinking - it ain't going to happen. Nothing more than a five minute wonder which will die a natural within a very short time just like all the forerunners.
So, I hear you say - at least it's getting the information out there on mainstream media but it's not is it? This case has had more mainstream media coverage than any other in history, positive and negative. Why folk think the contrary I'm at a loss to understand. All this alternative reportage by way of televised documentary, diverse YouTube video and podcasting is only creating more confusion because it's invariably inaccurate - sensationalism to attract an audience.

How can this film be anything more than a basic, sanatised version ? The makers will be sued if theyve overstep the mark.
Perhaps now is not the right time to be making a film when there are restrictions on content.

Re: Netflix probes Madeleine McCann disappearance in new documentary
As this is a live case then we perhaps should consider the purpose of the documentary (other than looking for subscribers) and what the possible content could be. The article states that Dr Amaral and the investigators may have been interviewed however the McCanns and their 'team' not (as they refused). That suggests a slant that would not show the McCanns up in good light however using the Amanda Knox case as a successful (for Netflix) example, here's what she said about it:-
Miss Knox, who has said she was not paid to be involved in the documentary, said the prosecutor's focus on her meant Miss Kercher had been "lost" in the case.
She said: "For [the Kercher's family] that's never going to end and that's the really sad part about this tragedy.
"As soon as the prosecutor made this about 'it has to be Amanda, it has to be Amanda', they took away the fact this case is about her.
I suspect that this documentary will follow the same lines (it was all about concentrating on the parents) however I hope I'm wrong and await with baited breath!

It's way over rated. I was at my sisters, did a search for a number of films, about 10, and reasonably old ones, not one of those films could be found on Netflix.
Obviously, if they are exploiting Madeleine McCann to produce a badly researched documentary by interviewing bogus Investigators employed by the suspects, they have no credibility.

Thanks Sharon. I've just had a look at Netflix and the first month is free so I might subscribe just to watch the documentary then bin it off.

Do Netflix really think that by getting Olive Oyl to advertise this nonsense in The Sun people will subscribe just to watch it?
Rebekah Brooks demands Op Grange, Op Grange talk to Netflix, Netflix produces Mockumentary 2 and McCann friend, Olive Oyl, dresses it all up and prints it in Rebekah Brooks' fakenews paper, the Sun.
As Brooks said, "Were all in this together"
Re: Netflix probes Madeleine McCann disappearance in new documentary
It’s called Netflix because of the amount of time you spend flicking through looking for something worth watching.

Re: Netflix probes Madeleine McCann disappearance in new documentary
It ain't even scheduled yet .
It was talked of eighteen months ago - here we are still waiting. Bit like the untold story .... hold on a minute - could this be it ?
A documentary/film smacks to me of fiction with an element of fact, bit like the Operation Grange Crimewatch production of yesteryear. How is the viewer supposed to differentiate between fact and fiction - I guess it doesn't matter as long as it sells.
Meanwhile good people, Richard D Hall's controversial videos have been online for all to watch, at no cost to the viewer, for many many months.

I don't subscribe to Netflix but others in my family do (I use IPTV and other paid internet TV solutions). From what I know the selection available in the UK is quite poor, if you really want to get more value then get a VPN and set your location to USA this opens up thousands more. Their documentaries etc. are usually of high quality, it will be interesting to see the theme of this oneJill Havern wrote:@HKP Do you know if Netflix is any good please?

Beware the Ides of March, indeed!
A day about a famous murder, much plotting, intrigue and betrayal!
Also, traditionally the day that all debts must be settled!
Maybe someone at Netflix has a bent towards the classics.

Madeleine McCann latest: Family snubs new film about missing girls
A DOCUMENTARY about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann which boasts new interviews with key investigators is to be screened this month.
By TRACEY KANDOHLA
PUBLISHED: 17:50, Mon, Mar 4, 2019 | UPDATED: 18:08, Mon, Mar 4, 2019
Streaming service Netflix said it will be a huge global success as the 12th anniversary of her disappearance nears, but Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry refused requests from producers Pulse Films to take part. Their holiday friends and spokesman Clarence Mitchell have also snubbed the venture, saying: "We want nothing to do with it."
Madeleine, three, vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007 while her parents were dining with friends nearby.
Top cardiologist Mr McCann and his ex-GP wife, both 50, from Rothley, Leicestershire, still hope Madeleine will be found alive.
It is not yet known if the documentary, which is reported to have cost up to £20million, will be a one-off, a two-parter or, as originally intended, an eight-part series.
A source close to the film-makers said yesterday: "Everyone everywhere is fascinated by the Maddie story."
And an insider at Pulse Films said: "Netflix are hoping it will be a massive hit."
