From ultimaThule's post

'Coatbridge Dirtys'?  Is this name intended to signify dirty tricks which are enacted in Coatbridge or thereabouts?

Possibly, but a dirty is a girl of easy virtue.

I was speaking of what the term usually means in Glasgow and the surrounding area, but of course it could have many other meanings.

"Burnley Coroner's Court was told that by the time Mr Sahlke returned to East Lancashire, he was drinking heavily and lived latterly in a flat in Carr Road."

So, he only started drinking heavily when he returned from the search. It makes you wonder what could have happened during his time in Portugal to have driven him to drink on his return.
