Maddie 'look-alike' DNA to go to the UK from Queenstown
New Zealand police have obtained a DNA sample from a young girl people had thought to be Madeleine McCann, at the request of Scotland Yard.
The request follows a New Year's Eve sighting of the girl in Queenstown. It was not the first time her striking resemblance to the missing young British girl had been reported to police.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis, of Dunedin, confirmed police would be sending a DNA profile of the girl to British police investigating Madeleine's disappearance.
"Police will be sending a DNA profile to British police ... to confirm the identity of a girl who has been mistaken for Madeleine by a member of the public," Mr Croudis said.
DNA sampling was a conclusive way to establish identity, he said.
The DNA profile was given voluntarily to police. The results of the test are not expected to be available for weeks.
"The results of this process will not be known for some time," he said.
Madeleine McCann went missing from the Ocean Club complex in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007 just before her fourth birthday. She was on holiday with her parents Kate and Gerry and siblings Sean and Amelie.
Queenstown hit international headlines after a retailer reported serving a man, and a girl who bore a striking resemblance to the missing Madeleine, on New Year's Eve.
The sighting sparked a five-day police investigation.
On January 4, Queenstown police issued a statement saying they had identified the girl seen in Queenstown and were "absolutely satisfied' she was not Madeleine.
Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron declined to disclose any details about the identified child, stating only that this was not the first occasion someone had contacted police remarking on the similarity between the two girls.
At the time, Mr Cameron would not disclose the methods used by police to identify the child.
It is not the first time a child has been DNA-tested in relation to the case of the missing British girl.
In 2011, a young girl spotted in India with a Belgian man and French woman was tested and was also found not to be Madeleine.
A spokeswoman at the British High Commission in Wellington would not comment and said all matters relating to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann should be directed through the commission's London office.
The London office has not responded to questions asked by The Southland Times last week.

Admin can you please change the ridiculously grossly misleading title of this thread please. It is not Maddie, Mddie's DNA isn't being sent anywhere.

From the PR effort above:
In 2011, a young girl spotted in India with a Belgian man and French woman was tested and was also found not to be Madeleine.
unquote
You're damn right she was found not to be Madeleine, as the Indian police deny ever seeing the girl or ever having been alerted by anyone whatsoever.
No photograph was released either (and may we ask why the coloboma is never mentioned? In theory, if present, it would increase the chance of it being Maddie by a factor of many thousands. Although she didn't have the very definite black bar in her eye at all on the admission of her parents. )
So it does follow that no DNA can have been extracted from a girl in India who appears to only have been seen by a select few who lost no time in passing this on to the press. Not to the police in Leh.
This New Zealand manifestation is the same thing:
Get people excited about DNA CSI style detective work..
Get it in the press - always good for a few copies.
The NZ police identified the girl and her father ages ago.
It's a bit of a damp squib, I'd have expected more of the pink one than this tired recipe.

Not just that. It seems SY do not trust NZ police who are satisifed it was not MM. The parents will have proven it was their child which would have been distressing to them. Utterly bizarre that anyone who looks like MM will need to send off dna samples to be ruled out. It's ridiculous, that is why I don't believe a word of it.

You beat me to it...date of article 6th Feb 2013, day of court case between McCanns and Bennett.
Presumably, when the police checked the young girl first time round they verified that the 'NZ parents' hadn't suddenly started walking around with a four year old girl that the neighbours, doctors, health workers, local kindergarten, relatives etc. had never seen before. bah.

Official Find Madeleine Campaign Graham Perry Understand your concerns, but the NZ police have assured Scotland Yard and Madeleine's parents that the child is NOT Madeleine. We have to trust that the NZ police have done a thorough job of determining it is not Madeleine.

There are very strong indications that a lump of rock on the Moon that has a striking resemblance to a missing young girl from Leicestershire, has been identified as a lump of rock.

Are you a busy PR professional? Have you spent a horrible day warding off unhelpful suggestions? Tired, can't really be bothered and yet you still have to feed the pesky media, when you'd rather be watching the final of "Splash" on catchup tv?
Well, why not try feeding them some old leftovers from another day. Simply heat up slightly, add some foreign spice for the exotic taste and re-arrange it all artfully as the plat du jour. Voila, the voracious media sated, not realising it has happily consumed last week's dodgy tripe.
Happy days.

If this goes on the DNA labs will have a field day! Lots more DNA samples of girls who have been mistaken for Madeleine McCann.
Off -hand I can think of several hundred in my immediate neighbourhood...

If I was the parent there's no way I'd allow my daughter's DNA to be taken and put on a database somewhere else just because she had a passing resemblance to MM.

Yes, and presumably her photo was sent to SY/Mccanns for a look as well and ruled out. (thats IF there was any grain of truth in the first place with the whole story). Its 100% nonsense.

Re: Maddie 'look-alike' DNA to go to the UK from Queenstown
It is quite disgusting. We though some years ago that it would die down and that families with one blonde girl would stop being harassed.
But no.
Now we have young girls being molested, and assaulted (DNA testing involved removal of tissue, - even if it is only a few mouth-lining cells obtained by chewing a little toothbrush end, the principle is there) across the world.
IF the case is one day solved in the way Dr Amaral thinks probable, (and yes Carter-Ruck I am repeating those words here ! So clock up another thirty pieces of silver for finding it !) then there should be a class action against TM and their acolytes for stalking.

Iris Pattison Good that he NZ police are so co-operative in this matter. From my knowledge they are a good force. Whatever the results will pray for strength for Madeleine's family during this time.
Some people have short term memory loss.

Re: Maddie 'look-alike' DNA to go to the UK from Queenstown
Something to ponder.
When it is proven Maddie died in apartment 5a is it possible that all those people who have had their lives intruded upon, photos splashed across the media and strangers claiming their child is Maddie can file a suit against the mccanns, the tapas 7 and the pink princess for harrassment, assault, stalking, filing false police reports re:sightings and so on.
Due to the deception by the above named, their lives have been dramatically changed, allegations have been made, the finger of suspicion pointed at them and unnecessary samples taken in the quest for a child who was known to have been dead st the time of the alleged sighting.
I also wonder if every police force who has been embroiled in this fiasco of false sightings etc can also charge the group and the pink princess with filing false police reports, obstruction of justice, wasting police time and so on.
I would hope so, realising the amount of possible jail time faced, plus fines plus refunding police costs wasted on searching for a child known to be dead (think casey anthony) it might be enough to make one or two of the motley crew to think again.
Everyone who searched, all the organisations that searched, locals and holiday makers who gave up their time and effort could all have a claim on them, all those who donated to the fund could also file a class action claiming the money was obtained by deception, they donated to find a live child not a dead one, any services the group got also obtained by deception then all the money they obtained fraudulently from the media. it soon mounts up, bankruptcy facing them all including the pink princess.
They will be unemployable, even as shelf stackers in the local supermarket, all will lose their licences to practice.

Re: Maddie 'look-alike' DNA to go to the UK from Queenstown
I am rather tired with so much reading on and off today. Am I getting this right..........the parents of a girl in NZ have consented to a DNA sample being taken from their child [ presumably to put to rest speculation that she is NOT Madeleine McCann ]?
So under duress ......just because she looks like [allegedly] a missing child , proof that she is not that child is needed ?
What happens if the response to this request was no? Please do not tell me we have reached the stage where it can be enforced..
But then if they say no the attention will never go away.
What a situation to be in.
The world truly has gone mad.
