These appear to be the key facts as reported in the Indian newspaper:

Leh, July 23 [Saturday]

Last night [i.e Friday 22 July] when three persons identified a six-year-old girl as Madeleine McCann...Last night, a British woman saw a French woman with her Belgian husband roaming in the market...

She immediately informed the British police...[Scotland Yard? Leics Police?]

...and the Leh police.

The local police has taken the passports of the suspects for verification...

...an American youth - who was also following the couple - tried to take away the girl from them...

I sent this of to the paper concerned, you can only ask.

Dear Tribune,
I would like to ask how your newspaper sourced the story that Madeleine McCann was seen in Leh, detained and had DNA swabs taken.
The local police in Leh have denied all knowledge and have no such girl in custody.
So it seems that the story was false and you have been left with egg on your face. You are not the first media agency to suffer this indignity in regard to the McCanns.
I would like to know the name of the person who sold you this story. It would be interesting if your source led us to the McCann parents.
Parents who look more guilty as to the death of their daughter as the days roll on.
Or was it a piece of fiction your paper made up to increase sales. I doubt this senario.
I hope you can be of assistance and your help might go a long way to solving this mystery. Something your paper could be proud of.

People are still tweeting and its all over the internet that Madeleine has been found. There have been nummerous texts to say this is not true, and yet they are still tweeting this. Funny how this coincides with the twittering that was going on about Pat's book, its taken the onus off that thinking

As we know on here this 'story' was reported last Saturday night in India. If it was true then you have to ask why it is has taken 5 days for it to come out here! And if it was Maddie then the police would know for sure by now if not almost immediately

And the reports in the UK rags do not specify a date whatsoever, nothing like last Saturday or last night....Its total garbage these reports and I suspect either someone from india trying to get a scoop on the back of Maddie or the McScams putting out more propaganda and lies

Daily Mail still carrying the story, and updated at 1.35. Still includes comments from CM saying he is liasing with Indian authorities. Err how, they don't know anything about it. roll

Notice how pinky came out to say that their PI are aware of this story and the mccanns are liaising with Leh police then quickly retract after various journalists found out and tweeted the story is a hoax.
Pinky and mccanns' credibility is definitely on the line and questionable over this false reporting.

What would be interesting is who was the UK press's source for this story? From who they got this sighting in India and dna request from? If it was the mccanns or team mccanns can you imagine their embarrassment!

One would have thought the mccanns would board a plane straight away to Leh to verify for themselves, instead of putting out this dna matching request yarn that doesn't make sense at all if the Leh Police held onto the girl. what's better than rushing out to rescue Maddie no matter what! Not as if they dont have money - that is what their fund is supposed to be for!

The family of Madeleine McCann has played down a reported sighting of their missing daughter in India.

Speaking to ITV News family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Nothing leads us to believe that this 'sighting' is any more credible than any others."

Police were thought to be investigating after a British woman spotted a six-year-old girl who appeared to look like Madeleine in the city of Leh in the north of the country on Friday.

What is frustrating is the UK public is sold one story, while behind the scene Pinky is fast to retract their story when he learned journalists have caught out their lies and tweeting about the hoax. He got David Ross (IIRC) to damage control for him on twitter So why isnt the Press reporting about the mccanns hoax?

Anyone with an iota of common sense can figure that out.
Why liaise with the police about dna (messing about) when they can go and verify for themselves, unless they already know it was a hoax - so how did they know it was a fake report - could it be they planted it ? Of course they did.

None of the TV news are reporting this 'story' and neither are the respected papers like the guardian, independent etc. Only the red tops and daily mail's....Doesn;t take much imagination to work out why!
