The UK police were right not to "put the record straight" over false reports claiming Gerry and Kate McCann were implicated in their daughter's disappearance, the Leveson inquiry has heard.

Matthew Baggott, the former chief constable of Leicestershire police, told the inquiry on Wednesday he could not have released information about DNA tests conducted in the UK to counter leaks by the Portuguese police that falsely claimed they showed the McCanns had hidden Madeleine in the boot of a hire car in Portugal.

Baggott said there were both legal and professional reasons for this. Portuguese secrecy laws made it "utterly wrong to have somehow, in an off-the-record way, have breached what was a very clear legal requirement upon the Portuguese themselves", he told Lord Justice Leveson.

He also said the Leicestershire force's priority was to maintain a positive relationship with the Portuguese police, with a view to "eventually ... resolving what happened to that poor child".

Last November the Leveson inquiry heard how the Daily Express reported there was DNA evidence that could show the little girl's body had been stored in the spare tyre well of a hire car.

It turned out the analysis conducted in the UK was "inconclusive" and there was no foundation for making that allegation. Express Newspapers paid £550,000 damages to the McCann's in 2008 for inaccurate reporting by the Daily Express and the publisher's three other titles.

Leveson asked Baggot about evidence submitted by a Daily Star crime reporter two weeks ago that the Leicestershire police "knew perfectly well that the results didn't demonstrate that", and could have given off-the-record briefings to British journalists not to report a DNA link.
"Even with the benefit of hindsight, sir, I'm still convinced we did the right thing and I think integrity and confidence, particularly with the Portuguese, featured very highly in our decision-making at that time," said Baggott.

He added: "So the relationship of trust and confidence would have been undermined if we had gone off the record in some way or tried to put the record straight, contrary to the way in which the Portuguese law was configured and their own leadership of that."

When they appeared before Leveson late last year, Gerry and Kate McCann told how they were left distraught by false claims in the UK press that they were responsible for their daughter's disappearance or her death.

Leveson later accused the Daily Express of writing "complete piffle" and "tittle tattle" about Madeleine McCann.

This is not the Smith family who were witnesses in the McCann story. This relates to Martin Smith a convicted paedophile who was on the run in Spain.

"Mr Ryley also pointed out that an internal audit of Sky News had found no evidence of any payments having been made to public officials.

He was also asked about the hacking of paedophile Martin Smith's email account.

Smith was jailed last year for 16 years for child sex offences in Cumbria but was found hanged in his cell in Manchester prison earlier this year.

His wife, Lianne, is still awaiting trial in Spain for the murder of her two children in 2010.

Mr Barr asked what was the public interest in hacking into the Smiths' emails.

Mr Ryley said: "Martin Smith was a suspected paedophile on the run. Their daughter Rebecca was already on child protection procedures. His wife was running a nursery in Barcelona and Sky News believed and had reasonable grounds for suspecting that if the local authority had done more it might have been able to find out the whereabouts of the family."

Tony Blair to appear before Leveson Inquiry


Former Prime Minister Tony Blair is to appear before the Leveson Inquiry next Monday.

The inquiry into media standards is currently examining the relationship between press and politicians.

On Tuesday Education Secretary Michael Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May face questions.

The next day, Business Secretary Vince Cable and Justice Secretary Ken Clarke will appear. Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt will give evidence on Thursday.

I hope that Leveson has not forgot the man who "controlled" what came out in the press. The head of the Governments Media Monitoring Unit in the early days must have something to say about all this.

One of the first things that the McCanns did was to call the media, Clarrie drops his job to rush to their aid and then Rebekah Brooks is blackmailing the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary into ordering a review of the case.

The media have been involved in this case since the start and whatever is going on the Master Media Manipulator is at the heart of it,

Yes, I might be cynical, but it is very odd that of all people, Clarry has not been called, or apparently even hacked. It's
almost as if he is more teflon than teflon tony.
Sometimes the clues are not in 'what IS there', but in what 'is NOT there'.
So if a government wanted to get people-tagging accepted, good to start
with children. To achieve this a highly popular demand
needs to be created, such as that which would follow a very emotive child snatching.
Plot in place, central 'untouchable' in control, it's now time to get all the other details rolled out. News
controlled and line fed out according to the bigger agenda.
So who benefits ?
The financiers of the technology who lobbied govt ministers?
The illuminati, who control government 'key personnel' throughout the world, whose New World Order is focussed on holding data and subsequent control over all mankind?
'Key personnel' who have an unwholesome and lascivious interest in
children?

What might be dressed up as a perfectly good and honest idea could nevertheless, in the wrong hands, be a thing of horror.
There are patently those who would find a child register and tracking system blissfully useful, able to select out those that would meet requirements and who would not be noticed if they went missing.
Child sex trafficking focusses currently on children's homes. These have too recently been found to be a focus of abuse, and yet the information remains under virtual repression.
