Just to clarify the pictures . Getty ,AP, etc  [agency snappers ] will be using 400mm lenses .[ usually cannon ]
In daylight on normal mode they can shoot detail 500m away  [ just ok for a cricketer at the crease at a test ground , closer head shot  using crop mode on camera ,or a doubler on the lens which increases the focal length but the lens becomes fixed .  [ 600mm ideal ].

At f2 the background blurs  [ bokeh effect ] so the photographers will be opening up the aperture  f 4 and above ,allowing for the background not to be out of focus ,as detail is key in this situation .

The exclusive pic  the dog pic ,is due to the clarity of the background is again not at f2, and with it being in a shaded area, and clean its shot on a poss 120 lens meaning they are much nearer say 50m max.

so are exclusive pix getting [ in open golf terms ] under the rope [ the rope separating the gallery, and the course where the photographers have exclusive access .

There is nothing stopping the snappers taking pics its public highway so to speak only the land owner could object [ same as Beckham whenever paps took pics , his Lawyers ask for the data from the j peg , focal length etc to establish where the pic was taken from to establish if it was taken from public highway, or on private grounds, the underpants pic on the balcony the snappers took it from the hotel grounds and had to pay all profits back ] .
so tomorrow paps will turn up . but IMO exclusive pix are under the rope so to speak .

I did a quick calculation:

This is a route from apartment 5A, via the Smithman sighting, to the area of scrubland where the corrugated metal sheet is (thanks to Google Earth).

Digging to start next week (continuation of automatically locked thread) - UPDATE... starting today 2/6/14 - Page 2 <a href=Digging to start next week (continuation of automatically locked thread) - UPDATE... starting today 2/6/14 - Page 2 Route11

The distance of this route is 0.38 miles according to Google Earth.

Assuming a walking speed of 3.5 miles per hour, it would take approximately 6.5 minutes to walk this distance.

One could easily get to and from this spot in under 20 minutes, even with several minutes spent looking around for an ideal spot in the scrub-land.

How fascinating. I don't think Roman tunnels would resemble those warren-like earthy 'lairs' we've seen today. They'd be vaulted and in stone like the Parisian and Edinburgh catacombs, albeit on a vastly smaller scale. But a tunnel under the church??bigshock

The UK media are such hypocrites. How can the front pages be full of stories bigging-up the dogs now, even using the tragic death of April Jones to promote them? The cadaver dogs alerted to EVERYTHING connected to the McCanns back in 2007: apartment 5A floor, wardrobe, mother's clothes, child's t-shirt, Madeleine's toy, 5A garden, boot of McCann's car and car key. The media, in league with the McCanns, ignored them and turned a blind eye.

Whatliesbehindthesofa, I think The Smiths said he went down some steps on the other side of Rua 25 Abril.  This would mean that he could have walked along the road that is parallel to your yellow line.  On Google Earth, if you go to the top of this road and turn left, there is a small alleyway/road on your right that goes directly to the end of your yellow line.

Yes I think that's possible too, and it wouldn't make much difference to the timings.

ETA - Although ... I've re-read the Smith statements, and I can't see anywhere where anybody states that they saw him going down the stairs.

Maddie Case: Searching for evidence of death in Luz
3 June 2014 | Posted by  Joana Morais Leave a Comment

Digging to start next week (continuation of automatically locked thread) - UPDATE... starting today 2/6/14 - Page 2 0641_correiodamanha_4063bo
Front Cover: English search for Maddie's body. Excavations in the Algarve - they search for evidence of the body of the child who disappeared in Praia da Luz. Investigators bet on the homicide thesis.

The English police believe the child died in Praia da Luz and search for the cadaver or hidden vestiges.

by Rui Pando Gomes and Tânia Laranjo

The English Police believe the body of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared seven years ago in the Algarve, is or has been buried in Praia da Luz, Lagos. This the focus of the British investigators who began yesterday the search for evidence of the death of the English child on the ground where excavations were authorized, searching for both the corpse or other hidden vestiges.

CM found out that sniffer dogs, that were brought from England to detect corpses or buried clues, will begin to be used today in the searches. Investigators from Scotland Yard are convinced that the English child, then with four and who was on holiday with her parents and twin siblings in the Ocean Club resort, died in Praia da Luz and that her body was buried in a vacant lot.

They admit, however, that the body could have been removed, at a later time, from the location where it was hidden and that it is now possible to detect any clues that were left on the ground.

The proceedings are being followed up to detail by members of the Judiciary Police of Faro and teams of GNR officers that are ensuring all the security around the site of the investigations. Yesterday, during the day, elements of the English police marked the places where the main investigation should focus, with the placement of more than a dozen stakes, with multiple priority levels. Topographic measurements were also made and tents were assembled to provide support for the investigations.

The sniffer dogs who came from England for the searches will be on the ground today for the first time. They should search the most relevant sites and a georadar will be used afterwards. Before using the equipment to search for buried corpses, vegetation will have to be cut in defined locations.

The excavations should take place tomorrow if, in the meantime, any clue or tangible vestige is found.

Intruders monitored by GNR

The whole perimeter of the sites to be searched is around the size of two football fields together and is being controlled by the GNR [Guarda Nacional Republicana/Republican National Guard] officers twenty-four hours a day.

CM was able to establish that 40 military GNR officers will be involved in this operation daily. Among them are elements of the GNR Territorial Detachment of Portimão and dual patrolling teams [binómios] of men and dogs from the GNR Intervention Detachment of Faro. All movements of possible intruders who attempt to enter the terrain are followed in detail from the top of a hill, where the control post is located, with the help of long range binoculars.

Several teams, in rotation, ensure the security inside and outside the areas where the searches are taking place. The traffic, which at this time has been much more intense, is also being managed by the GNR.

During the night the entire place is also guarded by the military, to ensure the surveillance of equipment and materials placed on the ground. In the coming days the patrolling can be further strengthened.

Isn't it so very sad that the place was full of so many people on the bandwagon hauling their sorry backsides out there 7 years ago and now that there might be evidence of this little girl having lain dead and buried for 7 years somewhere close by if not in PdL.... she is all alone.
Who will be there for her apart from the police, if her remains are found? There is a list quickly forming in my mind of the adults who flew out there to do favours for the parents.

Who has come out to do Maddie a service and be present if and when it needs to be acknowledged that she is dead and can now be properly laid to rest?

She is all alone. It is beyond sad, it is disgusting. Not one person from the family can bear to go there, even if they felt they needed to stay at a distance rather than in PdL? Is there not one of them in Portugal? An aunt, uncle, anyone who was meant to love this little girl?

I've tried to watch all the 3 British major news stations' versions of the coverage in the last hour or so. A chap interviewed on Sky whose flat overlooks this spot says they have comtemplated the corrugated iron cover and the hole beneath as 'a likely spot' since the disappearance. Whilst this begs the disparaging question 'Well why the feck didn't you wander over the 50 yards or so, lift it up and have a look, then?' it would, however, also indicate the corrugated iron is old and has been in situ since the beginning.

It was also confirmed (not sure if Sky or ITV) that the site is indeed used as a pet graveyard by the locals. I wonder if the earthy holes we are seeing are simply pet tombs? The area is obviously frequently accessed so the thought of hiding a human body in a pet grave long term highly unlikely and would have been a risk of foolish magnitude. It's not inconceivable that it could have been a hiding place for one night, though. Surely very possible, in fact. Or indeed a permanent hiding place for other items such as clothing, blankets or towels which could be disguised as a shroud left around a pet by a grieving owner.

BTW, that editor of the Portuguese newspaper (Paul Luckman?), hero of the radio the other month pooh-poohed it all on the BBC. He has his opinion but I did object when he said the dogs were a waste of time as no smell would remain after 7 years. What a plonker, and how strange he should undermine himself on national telly without checking his facts. A newspaper editor!

If I had lost my child, I would have to be there when they were excavated out of the ground. No matter how decomposed the body was, I would have to see it. I would have to be there. It wouldn't be a matter of 'wanting' to be there, I would have no choice in the matter. I would have to be there for my child, to see them again after all those years of being apart. I could do no less.

Sorry to sound harsh, russiandoll, but the poor child is long dead.

The time for her to not be left alone and to be shown love was when she was alive.

It's too late now.

It may be that most people in her relatives' position might want to be there for emotional reasons of their own, but that has nothing to do with Madeleine any more Sad

ETA: I am referring to other relatives, not the parents. How the parents cannot want to be there, I cannot fathom.

She is all alone. It is beyond sad, it is disgusting. Not one person from the family can bear to go there, even if they felt they needed to stay at a distance rather than in PdL? Is there not one of them in Portugal? An aunt, uncle, anyone who was meant to love this little girl?

Quite right, russiandoll. It is foul. One can only try to understand their selfi... nervo... motives for behaving in such a blatantly hypocritical and revealing way.
