The latest McCann suspect: Scotland Yard has revealed vital new information about a suspect wanted in connection with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The McCanns are now in a very precarious position.
We know that the shutters were broken, and then they weren't
We know the curtains were wide open, and then tight closed
We know they weren't wearing watches, and then they were
We know that DP checked all the children, and then he didn't
We know all that because the McCanns have told us

What if it was CB, and what if he now makes a full and frank Voluntary statement confessing everything
What if Christian Brückner says he nipped in at 8;15 as he watched the McCanns leaving for dinner.

Then several people will have been lying, and deliberately, to avoid an accusation of Child Abandonment / Neglect.
As well as incidentally Perverting the Course of Justice in the collateral case

Very little compassion for him if he's done the other things mentioned, what worries me is that we may never really know.

Well, this is what I mean. They must have his DNA, and so it must be possible to compare it to whatever was found in the apartment. That would surely be essential, if this is going to move to a trial. I'm no expert on the law, but surely a suspect cannot be convicted on mere circumstantial evidence.  Wouldn't they need to establish in a trial how he did it and where he hid the body, and so on?  If he tells them where he hid the body, then they could dig it up, and establish a match with Madeleine's DNA. Wouldn't all this be necessary to take it to trial, and to get a successful prosecution?

I presume they have already checked his DNA with any samples on file relating to the case. Obviously no match if not mentioned.

I was about to say it was those two ladies who claimed to have witnessed two blond men standing on the balcony of an empty apartment, close to apartment 5a.

As I said over on the Documented Evidence thread, Jayne Jensen was featured in the Netflix documentary.

Also remember that the German legal system is an Inquisitorial one.
The judge, sitting with two or more lay Schöffner (rather like our magistrates, don't have detailed legal knowledge, but are supposed to have common sense) listens to what the advocate has to say, listens to the witness, and then will ask penetrating questions of his / their own. Direct to the witness, not through the advocate
I have watched it happen, and a witness literally begin to wriggle and squirm as her evidence was gradually pulled part in a way the lawyer had not expected.
If Brückner pleads Nicht Schuldig, then witnesses will have to be called, examined in chief, cross examined and then interrogated.
And the two principle witnesses are the Parents.

The prime suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance and suspected murder lived in a "disgusting" and "absolutely vile" farm building, and left behind wigs and exotic clothing when he abruptly moved out, it is claimed.
The German man, now 43, was "always a bit angry" and rented the ramshackle building from a British man two miles from the Praia da Luz resort where Madeleine vanished aged three in May 2007.
German prosecutors said on Thursday they are investigating the man on suspicion of murdering Madeleine and they believe she is dead.
Former neighbours said he made money selling cars and “disappeared without a word” in 2006, months before police believe the British girl was snatched from her family's holiday apartment.
The suspect - a paedophile convicted of child sexual abuse and currently in prison for reportedly raping an American tourist in the same resort in 2005 - lived a "transient" lifestyle, it has been claimed.
It is believed he moved into a camper van after leaving the farm building between Lagos and Praia da Luz.

A former neighbour told Sky News: “He arrived in the mid-90s and rented the place from the English owner.
"He went back to Germany at one stage and moved another German guy in to look after it, then came back and threw him out on the street.
“He was always a bit angry, driving fast up and down the lane.
"And then one day, around 2006, he just disappeared without a word. I think he left some rent unpaid."

Neighbours have said a number of old vehicles were located on the property.
The former neighbour added: "About six months later I was asked to help clean up the place and it was disgusting, ­absolutely vile.
“We found a bin bag and inside were wigs and exotic clothing.”
The woman said she was contacted by detectives from Scotland Yard who asked her about the man last year, without revealing any detail of their suspicion.

She was visited by Portuguese detectives this year. They showed her photos of the man and asked more questions.
German public prosecutors said on Thursday they are investigating a 43-year-old German man on suspicion of murder and believe that Madeleine is dead.
"The public prosecutor's office in Braunschweig is investigating a 43-year-old German national on suspicion of murder.
"From this you can see that we assume that the girl is dead."

Other people may have "concrete knowledge" of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, German police said as they revealed last night a child sex offender is the prime suspect.
The man, who has not been named, is white with short blond hair, possibly fair, and about 6ft tall with a slim build at the time she vanished on May 3, 2007.
Christian Hoppe, from Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), told the country's ZDF television channel the 43-year-old is serving a prison sentence for a sex crime and has two previous convictions for "sexual contact with girls".
German newspaper Braunschweiger Zeitung reported the suspect was carrying out a seven-year prison sentence for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal in 2005.

The newspaper said he was convicted of the offence in Braunschweig, where he once lived, in December last year.
Mr Hoppe said German police have not ruled out a sexual motive for the alleged crime against Madeleine, which is being treated as murder by the BKA.
He added that the suspect may have broken into an apartment in the Ocean Club complex in Praia da Luz - where Madeleine was on holiday with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and her twin siblings Sean and Amelie - before spontaneously kidnapping her.
A BKA appeal said: "There is reason to assume that there are other persons, apart from the suspect, who have concrete knowledge of the course of the crime and maybe also of the place where the body was left."

The German national is known to have been in and around the area on the Algarve coast at the time Madeleine went missing shortly before her fourth birthday.
A half-hour phone call was made to his Portuguese mobile phone around an hour before Madeleine is believed to have gone missing.
The suspect has been linked to an early 1980s VW T3 Westfalia camper van - with a white upper body and yellow skirting, registered in Portugal - which was pictured in the Algarve in 2007.
Scotland Yard said he was driving the vehicle in the Praia da Luz area in the days before Madeleine's disappearance and is believed to have been living in it for days or weeks before and after May 3.
He has also been linked to a 1993 Jaguar XJR6 with a German number plate seen in Praia da Luz and surrounding areas in 2006 and 2007.

A second clip captured the family on an airport bus in the Algarve, less than a week before Madeleine disappeared.
Both videos were released by Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann four weeks after their little girl went missing in Praia da Luz.

Filmed on April 28, 2007, they show the couple travelling to Portugal with their children Madeleine, Sean and Amelie, and a group of friends.
The documentary delves into the background of the case and shed light on all the theories behind the little girl's disappearance.
The film-makers' synopsis read: "A couple's grief over their daughter's disappearance is compounded by a frenzied media and a detective's mistaken belief that they played a part."

Kate and Gerry declined to participate in the 2019 docu-series, saying in a statement that the documentary wouldn't aid the search for their daughter.
"We are aware that Netflix are planning to screen a documentary in March 2019 about Madeleine's disappearance," they said at the time.

"The production company told us that they were making the documentary and asked us to participate

"We did not see - and still do not see - how this programme will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, it could potentially hinder it."
The parents added: "Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the programme. We will not be making any further statements or giving interviews regarding this programme."

Prosecutors in Germany have already begun building a strong case against the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, a drifter with a record of burglary and offences against young girls.
The man, now 43, had been living a “transient” life in a camper van, and working in and around Praia da Luz at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance from a holiday flat in the Algarve resort on May 3, 2007.
In the Crimewatch-style programme Case Files XY Unsolved on German TV tonight, Christian Hoppe, director of the National Crime Agency, said German police believed they had almost enough evidence to charge him with Madeleine’s abduction and murder.
Herr Hoppe said that there may be some people associated with the suspect who were aware of his ­movements on the night Madeleine disappeared, and he appealed to them to come forward and “clear their conscience” now.
Police appealed to anyone in the resort at the time to fill “the final gaps” in the case, releasing photos of the man’s camper van and Jaguar car and details of a phone call he made on the night the three-year-old vanished.

Police had been aware of his ­presence in the resort and had been building up a case against him since parents Kate and Gerry McCann made an appeal for information on German TV in October, 2013.
The suspect had faced sexual and drug-dealing charges in Germany before he arrived in Portugal.
He had also been involved in theft and burglary in the country, where he lived from 1995 to 2007, when he returned to Germany.
Police are unclear if the suspected motive was a simple burglary and Madeleine was found in the flat after it was broken into, or there was an intention to take her.
Police revealed the man’s Portuguese-registered phone was in the resort the night Madeleine vanished.
He received a half-hour phone call from another Portuguese number an hour before Madeleine was last seen.
His number, +351 912730680, and the caller’s number, +351 916510683, were released. The caller is not a suspect but is a “crucial witness” police now want to trace.
The programme revealed details of properties the suspect used in the area, one an apartment between Praia da Luz and Lagos, the other an empty property around 15km from Lagos.
Viewers were asked to send police any holiday snaps or video which could help their inquiries. In a reconstruction, Kate and Gerry McCann relived the moment they realised Madeleine was gone.
Kate told the programme, a version of Crimewatch, how they had returned from a tapas restaurant to find ­Madeleine’s bed empty.

She said: “It just seemed a very calm and peaceful place when we arrived there. When I went into her bedroom, I could not see her.
“I thought she was in our bedroom but she was not there either. The curtain went ‘pssh’ and I just remember seeing that the window had been opened.”
Gerry said from that moment they knew the “worst thing imaginable” had happened.
Scotland Yard Detective Chief Insp Mark Cranwell said the suspect had lived a “transient lifestyle” living in his camper van for “days on end”.
Police released photos of the man’s 1980s VW camper and Jaguar XJR-6, both were in Praia da Luz in 2007.

The Jaguar was re-registered in Germany to another person the day after Madeleine disappeared.
 The vehicles have since been seized in Germany and checked for forensic clues linking them to Madeleine.
The suspect had rented a ramshackle farm building from a British man two miles from the resort and had made money selling cars.

Met Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said: “It’s now 13 years since Madeleine went missing. Today is a significant point in time for the Met’s investigation.”
Kate and Gerry welcomed the breakthrough, saying: “All we have ever wanted is to find her, uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice. We need to find peace.”
Scotland Yard said they were “aware” of the man before getting a tip-off in May 2017, but he had never previously been a suspect.
They worked alone on the tip for four months before agreeing to liaise with German colleagues.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Cundy said since then “a huge amount of work” had been done by the Met and German police.
“The outcome of that is that he is a suspect in the Met’s investigation.
"We will not be giving the name or the identity of this man, but I do recognise that some people will know this suspect.
"Somebody called his phone. We don’t know who that caller was.”
Det Chief Insp Mark Cranwell, who is leading Operation Grange, issued a description of the suspect.

He said: “He is white, has short blond hair, possibly fair, about six foot in height with a slim build. In 2007 he was 30 and may have looked somewhere between 25 and early 30s.”
Appealing to anyone who personally knows the man, he added: “This individual is in prison and we are conscious that some people may have been concerned about contacting police in the past.
“Now is the time to come forward.”
