I wonder who will be the actress to play Karen Matthews. Waynetta is getting on a bit these days and may not pass it off as young enough....but who knows, she's a convincing actress and maybe the make-up ladies can take care of that.

That role could be a huge break for a newcomer, bobbin.
I'm thinking voice coach and Philomena. Money spent on enabling the lassie from Ullapool to acquire a Midlands accent can be saved on her having no need of the services of a make-up department.
For the interior shots of Shannon's home, I'm visualising a 'muriel' of Hilda Ogden fame on the living room wall. Perhaps an opportunity to showcase Mr Phil'ssnuff swamp art?
It's my belief Mrs Tony Rickwood will bring her own innateinsenstiivity to the role and make it uniquely her own.

I wonder if this was the whole plan in the first place. Gerry's @Bigger Agenda@, remember... (NO, I'm NOT talking about his....)...
This has to be "IT".
!. A Cunning Plan.
2. Get Family and Friends involved.
3. Let Tax Payers fund the search.
4. Humiliate the daughter, in perpetuity.
5. Keep digging the thing up to keep milking the lame cow story.
6. Do a 'socially acceptable' stint in clink, full board, rent free, make loads of new friends with loads of stories to tell.
7. Do a film, keep the rights, and launder the dosh instead of paying the taxpayers back.
8.
!!! Why aren't we all doing this ?.....it's the Good Life for sure.
Why work when you can fake, lie and get rich quick ?

It didn't just parallel another case, it was inspired by another case: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/3549830/Shannon-Matthews-kidnap-inspired-by-donations-to-Madeleine-McCann-fund.html
I don't care how much this upsets the McCanns or vilifies Karen Matthews but poor Shannon doesn't deserve this.

Matthews hoped her wicked scheme would generate an outpouring of generosity and reward money which she and her accomplice Michael Donovan could pocket for themselves.
People claiming to be members of Shannon's family approached representatives of the McCann fund asking for a share of the £1 million which had at that time been raised to help in the search for Madeleine.
And as Matthews and Donovan were convicted of kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice, the man who led the 24-day search for Shannon said he was in no doubt about the link to the Madeleine case.
Det Supt Andy Brennan, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "Madeleine McCann gave them the idea - the fund money. Clearly the McCann case was still in everybody's mind. Karen Matthews is pure evil. It's difficult to understand what type of mother would subject her own daughter to such a wicked and evil crime."
Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann, said: "It's beyond belief anyone could have sought to exploit poor Madeleine's plight in this way." Apart from the McCanns, of course.

The true extent of financial and other ways the McCanns have benefitted from their daughter's demise may never be known, but IMO quadrupling that sum may produce a figure which is more representive of the monies poured into their strictly for profit limited company by guillible folk in the first six months of its inception.
Compared with Dr Kate Healy I can almost* bring myself to feel sorry for Karen Matthews, a woman of limited intelligence whose cunning plan was quickly exposed and who received both the public villification and the prison term she deserved.
As for her daughter, on the day she was found and placed with foster carers a policeman was heard to remark 'this is the day Shannon's life begins'. I can only hope this prediction has come true and that she has benefitted from being cherished and nurtured in a manner she was unlikely to have experienced with her natural family.
The fundamental difference between these two cases is that Shannon is alive and may one day publish her story; unfortunately, we are unlikely to ever be able to read anything written by Madeleine McCann.
*that's an 'almost' and is not to be confused with an 'I do'!

Karen Mathews is a Yorkshire woman, as I am proud to say I am too. It is the piece of straw jammed in the mouth that causes us from up't north to speak as we do.ultimaThule wrote:That role could be a huge break for a newcomer, bobbin.

A piece of straw is all it takes t'speak broad Yorkshire, Nina?
Shall we form an orderly queue to save this production money on a voice coach for Philomena? < goes to fetch haystack >

oooooooh By the way I tried the straw, Nina, it works, the accent sounds really authentic.
My only problem, I don't understand 'Yorkshire-ese', so I couldn't work out what I was trying to say to myself.

Re: Shannon Matthews kidnapping to be made into TV drama by Bafta award winning team
Here's a sneak preview of the script:
Karen: "Ee bah gum ah'm reetskint mithered baht our Shannon, put ya brass in yon pail for t'search."
As these words do not greatly differ from those used by Phil in relation to her niece, I very much doubt she'll have any difficulty learning her lines and, if she does, she can improvise by drawing on her personal experience of appealing to thegullible public.
All that remains is to negotiate a fee. In return for Phil's instant stardom. clan McCann can stump up £4 million or so to be distributed among those pensioners, schoolchildren, and others who so generously gave to the lifestyle fund and we won't make any charge for the straw. Furthermore, by way of a bonus, we'll take Mr Phil to a swamp of his choice and draw pictures of him struggling to extricate himself from its fetid embrace.

Was that a 'two straw' accent? I got the 'gob' I know that one word - closest I get to Yorkshire accent is 'eeh ba goom, I go to'd bottom of the stairs'.
- and I have no idea what it means, have the same trouble with Glaswegian, Mancunian and Northern Irish.

Fee negotiation, an unlimited number of 'Get Out of Jail Free' cards.
Some to be used instantly for close family members, the rest to be sold on the black market to buy himself a garden hose attached to water, 3 bags of sand, 2 of hard core, and 2 of cement, to make his own swamp, tell him to get into the middle of it, for "photographs' you understand, hand him a twelve pack, and tell him to just stay there, relax, for as long as he likes.
For Uncle Phil, I'm thinking of "A Horse, A Horse, My Kingdom for a Horse" or as Monty Python semophored or aldis lamped it, "A shroe, A Shroe, My Dingkom for a Shroe", alternately, as a friend from Chesterfield would put it, "borrausurorse".
