Money laundering? Or another extension for their house? Kate and Gerry McCann hamper the search for Madeleine by placing half a million pounds of public donations in 'investments'
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/mccanns-launch-new-court-battle-9847926
McCanns launch new court battle against cop's claims they faked Maddie abduction - amid fears his case could leave search fund broke
But the trustees / Directors of the "Fund" said a long time ago that it could NOT be used for legal expenses ! Ester McVey (who then became a short lived MP) resigned very shortly after saying this in public . . .
According to the latest accounts filed last month the couple’s Find Madeleine fund has just £200,000 left after half a million was placed in investments. Experts say legal fees and a possible pay-out to Amaral would easily dwarf this sum, leaving no cash left to continue the couple’s efforts to find their daughter.
"placed in investments . . .? Who authorised this ? Where is it NOW ? Who has control ? And what "efforts" have they made to find their daughter ?
Amaral was relaxing this week in the Olivais region in the north of the capital Lisbon. A local who spotted Amaral dining told the Sunday People: “He rarely mentions it. We know who he is – everybody does.”
A shopkeeper added: “He comes to the newsagents and then goes to one of the restaurants here for lunch.”
Roadsweeper Enrique Gonzalez said: “He is popular with all of the police officers who live and work around here.
“He comes and talks about the old times.”
Brilliant.
But WHY is the MIRROR doing this ?

The fund has been used to pay legal for the last 10 years, (who is paying Carter Ruck now? ) but as soon as the tables are turned and they have to cough up, the fund is not to be used for legal fees.
Very clever, but they can't have it both ways.
They'll just have to sell the house like Kate said they would in 2007.
We only have abbreviated accounts for the past 2 years but for what its worth, we do have this from 2014

Shouldn't this possibility have been thought of before any legal action was taken?
How much is this latest challenge against the Supreme Court going to cost?

They could have kept their money by using widely available media tools to answer all the unanswered questions and address the concerns of doubters.
Instead they have legally fought against anyone expressing doubts and well founded suspicions.
If it was me and I was innocent and seriously wanted everyone on board looking for Madeleine, I would move heaven and earth to answer all questions and get that monkey off my back.
They have had the means and the money to do this right from the beginning.
For some reason they chose to try and shut everyone up.
Failed.

Let's not omit the Sunday People reports conclusion..
The McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “If Mr Amaral’s current book about Madeleine or any new one he may be planning to write is published here in the UK Kate and Gerry’s lawyers will take immediate action. He needs to know lawyers are watching.”
Another snippet..
'This week the Sunday People tracked down the ex-detective at the centre of the misery facing Kate and Gerry, both 48.'
Being of a cynical disposition, this kind of reportage always amuses me - they really have a way with words. Tracked down - for goodness sake, he's not an escaped grizzly. Do these hacks take a interpreter along with them when visiting a foreign land so they can interrogate the local road sweeper?
Bah!

Using the term tracked down makes GA sound like a criminal in hiding, and to quote a road sweeper attempts to lower his esteem.

The Mirror says
"Maddie cop sips beer ......As McCanns brace for new battle "
"Swig bucks , Amaral relaxes with a pint as he plans new book !"
How very dare he , have a drink while they are " haunted "
Were the hacks waiting for him to order sardines for his lunch ?
This man has more dignity in his little finger , McCanns wouldn't know the meaning !

Well I'm betting he hasn't left any kids unattended at home, so no problem there then.

Back to the investment. The accounts are showing a "fixed" asset investment (as opposed to a "current" asset investment)
That suggests that the investment is more likely to be property than something that could be easily converted into cash, such as stocks and shares.

LOL, I think that I already know the response I would get.
There is a rumour that there have been some large transactions with Missing People - will just check their accounts
Re: Money laundering? Or another extension for their house? Kate and Gerry McCann hamper the search for Madeleine by placing half a million pounds of public donations in 'investments'
The fund accounts have been audited by an accredited firm of London based auditors - I think it unlikely they would risk their reputation by breaking the law. The audit would appear to be within the boundaries of legallity, albeit only just. Alternatively, if they've been hoodwinked by the machinations of the the fund board of directors, then they should seriously reconsider their future.
I've always thought that the fund has been administered within the confines of law, at least on paper. However, as I've said before, as with any charitable cause that relies on public donations, there can be no way of identifying or controlling the destination of income - donations! A sort of one for you ten for me principle. It's so damn easy to pilfer.
An example such as the Find Madeleine Co. Ltd., with begging buckets, plain brown envelopes addressed to the McCanns Rothley and such like, who's to say how much they've raked in over the years?
I don't credit the McCanns with any degree of intelligence, cunning yes but that's not the same, they have however surrounded themselves with a bastion of specialists in every imaginable field. Catch me if you can!

Maybe strawberry vodka would have been a better choice. Not so down market as a "common pint of beer"sandancer wrote:The Mirror says

Re: Money laundering? Or another extension for their house? Kate and Gerry McCann hamper the search for Madeleine by placing half a million pounds of public donations in 'investments'
Have Kate and Gerry McCan't hampered the search for Madeleine by placing half a million pounds of public donations in 'investments'?
Pure 'speculation' on my part, but could the 'investments' have been 'forward planned' Madeleine 'merchandise' for the upcoming 10th 'anniversary'?
'Mugs, T-shirts, re-designed GQWB's, dolls, 'commemorative coins' etc., etc."
One last 'hurrah' from their 'cash cow' daughter?
Who knows?
Not me!

No, such items would have been included in purchases or stock. The accounts clearly show that an amount of £490,000 had been used for fixed asset investments this year. Fixed assets are things like property, plant etc. Tangible items that have a long useful life.

Maybe they have bought the apartment then and will turn their Ye Olde Online Shoppe into a proper shop/museum where they can display and sell their good quality wares.

I bet Farter Cluck never, in a million years, ever thought they would be 'itemised' as 'tangible items' in a client's 'accounts'!

Can but hope
On a serious note it is outrageous that they can beg the public for money because of the "low" fund to search for Madeleine when they have hidden assets and are still sitting pretty in Rothley Towers AND have nigh on 15M from the Home Office....... AND the government go on about benefit fraud and cuts etc,
A disgrace!

Good thinking. I hadn't thought of that, it wouldn't surprise me at all.
I was thinking of the Shining in Luz guy and his tours, perhaps they wanted to make sure that no-one was able to open up the apartment to such people.

And they could sell A-Z's to passing tourists of where they can look for the lair that Edgar reckons Maddie is being held captive.
