Just came across this in Steven Pinker - The better Angels of Our Nature, a History of violence and Humanity.

The bit that stuck out was the sentence
"for pluralistic ignorance to be robust against little boys [Emperor's clothes story] and other truth-tellers, it needs an additional ingredient: Enforcement

Exactly what we have with the McCanns and C-R ?

and "punishing heretics out of fear that they will be punished if they don't'" - Amaral.

Don't know about the McCanns and C-R, seems to me to encompass the whole blooming shebang!

What does page 680 say as I'm interested in the continuation of the bottom of page 679 starting "Macy & his collaborators found that unpopular norms can become entrenched in some, but not all, patterns of social connectedness. If the true believers are scattered throughout the population and everyone can interact with everyone else, the population is immune to being taken over by an unpopular belief. But if the true believers are clustered within...............
