He denies having gone so many kilometres in that car, adding that to have more mileage than what he indicated that this will be an error of whoever read the mileage [odometer], the defendant was the only person to use the car.' Still trying to find out the date of this cremation to put details together. There are issues if it doesn't collate with the Scenic cadaverine, that would have to be remonstrated some how. But 700km would allow for several return journeys to Ferreira do Alentejo...was this car tailed? And what was the mileage on 'his car' that was 'borrowed'?

Gerry McCann:

'2. As regards the Renault Grand Scenic, number plate 59-DA-27, it was hired by Gerry from Rent a car AA. Castanheira, with offices in Lagos, on 27-05-2007 and was delivered to the McCann couple at the apartment they were occupying in P da L, from which time it was noted in the contract that a friend of the McCanns, Alexander Cameron, was noted as an additional driver.

- At a later date, at the end of August, another additional driver was added to the contract, Michael Terrence Wright.

- The return of the car to the rental agency, was done at the agency?s offices on 23-09-2007 by a Caucasian individual, who appeared there alone, speaking English, about 1.80 cm tall, with short grey hair, about 60-65 years old, who signed the delivery document for the return of the car, but whose signature is illegible.

- When the car was delivered to the McCanns it had 3.114 km on the clock and when it was returned it had 14.443 km on the clock, thus 11.227 km had been travelled during the period the car was in their possession.' Source

ETA - it would be very sad if she was cremated. That would make determining her cause of death nigh on impossible. Even if someone rolls over on them finally, we could never know for sure if they were being truthful about cause of death.

I will add, and yes this is somewhat morbid, but I have seen a demonstration of how cremations work. The person performing the cremation would HAVE to be implicit at the point of cremation. Hiding under an old lady would only work up until the point of performing the cremation. I hate to be graphic so I will put this part in spoiler tags:

I googled this question and have come across conflicting replies.

Came across this. I don't know how accurate the claims are, but it gives a glimmer of hope if it's true:

"In the past five years new research has greatly heightened forensic scientists’ knowledge of how to detect and extract DNA from skeletal remains that have been subjected to extreme heat. However, most forensic scientists and laboratories around the world still struggle to retrieve usable DNA. This is because many do not have access to, or are unaware of, new alternative approaches which can undeniably increase the amount and quality of DNA information drawn from cremated human remains.

DNA is typically destroyed by high temperature when a proper cremation is conducted. However because of the inconsistencies of funeral home and crematorium industrial cremators or incinerators, Private Lab Results labs has been successful in doing so.

So, if it can be determined who this "old lady" was, maybe her family had the ashes interred somewhere. If this is the case, maybe if they are analysed, it can be determined if the ashes contain two bodies".

Quoting from the above article:
