If you look amongst the timelines from January to May 2008, you will see that it seemed to be up in the air whether they were going to be included.

The PJ certainly wanted them included, but in the end nothing was heard about this anymore and anyway they were very busy, you know, with all sorts of things and in the end it turned out they couldn't have done the rogs anyway, however much they'd wanted to, because - you could have knocked me over with a feather - turns out it's the same dates that they were in Brussels, giving a powerpoint presentation on Amber Alert Europe, not that the MEPs needed to hear about that from Wallace and Grommit, because as it happens the whole thing had already started in Europe in 2006, but by giving a presentation and getting it all over the papers how bravely they were still trying to find Madeleine and how they were going to save all the children in the world from a similar fate, they somehow, totally accidentally and entirely due to the press, gave the impression it was their idea in the first place.

That's how they missed being in the UK at the time of the rogatory interviews.... spin sleep well little darlings.....

Many thanks Tigger - I wondered if their lawyers had advised against it, but I see now that they were otherwise engaged.

Besides which it was the McCanns who set the questions for the other rogs to answer. They'd hardly ask them to answer their own questions now would they especially as there was such drama about the previous batch and all.

Some of the questions One I believe, usually asked at the end, most were set by the PJ and the UK police had to adhere to these.

I'm sorry, Candyfloss. I should know better than to spread untruths even if they are only partial. In my defence I spent the day reading ROB's rog and for a moment I lost my sense of reason.

ROGATORY INTERVIEWS - QUICK QUESTION Empty Re: ROGATORY INTERVIEWS - QUICK QUESTION

Post by Guest 29.09.12 15:18

Someone posted recently that the rogatory statements were like watching an episode of friends, it got me thinking and now I can't find the original post so I'm putting my question here if that's ok.

I'm making an assumption that the transcripts came directly from the British Police interviews as opposed to having been translated into Portuguese and then translated back like Kate's diary was, is this correct?

I quoted the remark about 'Friends' but not as if the rogs were an episode, more that the Tapas 9 behave like the characters in the sitcom - (one of the examples quotes was the reaction of the others when Jane was going to 'relieve' ROB - all rather puerile) it's possibly in Blacksmiths somewhere or Dr. Roberts' articles.
The transcripts were in English as far as I know, the questions had been set by the PJ and had to be translated for the Leicester police.

If you considered how quickly the French police recently was given the green light to interview people in Britain after the murder in the Ardennes and then think it took the PJ some six months to get permission to interrogate vital witnesses as well as the two main suspects, it's clear the British government blocked the normal channels.
Both the McCanns should have been interviewed again but they suddenly had to go to Brussels to promote Amber Alert. Despite still being suspects in the case, the PJ were not able to interview them. Jaqui Smith at the Home Office I believe was instrumental in this.

Hi tigger, a very good point about the speed of police being able to interview abroad and of course getting a EAW for the school teacher. The French massacre was in Haute Savoie, not the Ardennes, and local people and UK citizens are still being interviewed regarding the family shooting.

ROGATORY INTERVIEWS - QUICK QUESTION Empty Re: ROGATORY INTERVIEWS - QUICK QUESTION

Post by Guest 02.10.12 15:44

It's interesting that some were translated to Portuguese and some weren't. I wouldn't envy the person trying to translate them.

I've read most of the rogs from time to time but never realized until today that they were all at the McCann's request. I don't know how I missed such a large detail but it puts a very different perspective on them.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean. The rogatories were requested by the PJ as early as October 2007. The Home Office blocked their requests time after time, the McCanns imo were very afraid that they'd have to be interviewed again, because the PJ certainly had included them in their plans.
If you read the timelines for the end of 2007 and 2008 to April, you will see they appeared to be quite worried about having to undergo other interviews.
Imo the Home Office arranged the visits to Brussels and Strassbourg as an excuse to let them off.

So how can the McCanns have requested rogatory interviews? They didn't want any at all.

There may be a misunderstanding here, otherwise I've missed out on an important detail.
AFAIK it was the PJ who requested the rogatory interviews and the McCanns got permission to add some questions of their own [and maybe also to suggest other people to be interviewed ...?].

ETA if Cristovao's fact-fiction " A Estrela da Madeleine" is to be "believed", the PJ were not interested in re-interviewing the McCanns, but only 2 others in the group ...

Thank you for guiding me there, Finn. October/November was always an extremely busy time of the year for me then. So I must have missed it when reading in again end of November. IMO this may have been yet another pre-emptive strike on the part of the McCanns, as they may have known what Rebelo was planning?

ROGATORY INTERVIEWS - QUICK QUESTION Empty Re: ROGATORY INTERVIEWS - QUICK QUESTION

Post by tigger 02.10.12 17:20

Well, you've rattled me but here it is:
Processo Volume XI, pages 3030 to 3034

Faxed from Society of Attorneys 16 Oct 2007 to Ministerio Publico in Portimao.

GERALD PATRICK MCCANN and KATE MARIE HEALY, better identified in the documents referenced above, approach, very respectfully, to set forth and request, Sir, the following:

1 - Since the applicants stopped being considered witnesses, moving to suspects of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, witnesses central to the discovery of truth were not questioned, or re-questioned.

2 - With the recent investigations, witness interviews and interrogations of the applicants, new questions were raised and doubts aroused, broadening, in this way, the object of the investigation, as well as matters of fact considered relevant to the investigations.

3 - Indeed, the Investigation departed from confining itself to the disappearance of the minor, proceeding to embrace other matters, allegedly connected with her.

4 - It is therefore essential to hear these witnesses who can explain facts now very relevant, such as the way the couple treated their children, their personality and routine and, even, the reactions manifested by them after the disappearance and the consequent psychological and emotional state.

5 - So, and because it is believed essential and indispensable for the establishment of the facts and consequent discovery of the truth, they come to request the hearing of the following groups of witnesses, all present and with direct knowledge of the facts:
Unquote (see Finn's reference above for the rest)

Thank you for that, I can see now that they were advised to use their status as arguidos - which gives them more rights under Portuguese law - to ask for a bunch of friendly witnesses to be heard.
We then have the Rothley meeting in mid November, where the answers to be given in the rogatories were thrashed out. The PJ also had the right to interview McCann and Healy as much and as long as they liked. That wasn't to their liking and that must have been one of the reasons Jaqui Smith held up the process.
Although the document referred to above give very pointed guidlines as to which questions should be asked, the PJ had their own list of questions, which no doubt they didn't make public. So that explains the errrmms and youknows - the stalling in the rogatories.
It's rather satisfying to find that the rogatories have been far more informative than the McCanns intended. Can't have total control Gerry!

It is actually far more interesting to know this, so thank you Finn, we have need of you! roses
Imo this is all part of the damage limitation that was ongoing as from the moment they were made arguidos.

So in short: imo the rogatories were requested because the witnesses listed could whitewash the McCanns. In a nutshell, didn't work. winkwink

Glad to help but it was JD who put me in the path, OH and I did a lot of reading through the years and it's funny how each time you go back you find something new.

Today is the first time I could put Cat Baker fully into perspective, it's an eye opener.

They must have been really rattled around that time.

Imo it was the people who'd been protecting and facilitating them whilst they were in Portugal, no doubt thinking they could keep a lid on it. Then they became arguidos and all bets were off. Big panic behind the scenes if you ask me.
It took till mid March 08 before the papers were gagged. By August that year they were free from the arguido status - see the timelines, they thought they'd be 'free' as early as January!
Seems to me they could request certain witnesses to be heard, but could not direct the questions. It's particularly striking that none of the requests made by them re rogatories, mention the need to find Maddie.

Post by jd 04.10.12 2:04

Good work Tigger and Finn. The RI's do ask the Tapas 7 questions from the mccanns....and yes it is so plainly obvious from your observations that these questions were asked to generate the answer to support them and the questions/answers to be asked were sorted out in November 2007

When have you ever heard of a suspect in a case..... 1) Not being interviewed.... and 2) Being able to ask the questions instead!

Don't think Stuart Hazell will be afforded this in the Tia Sharpe case!

This is so corrupt its unreal

ROGATORY INTERVIEWS - QUICK QUESTION Empty Re: ROGATORY INTERVIEWS - QUICK QUESTION

Post by tigger 12.08.13 13:06

This is the list of people submitted to the PJ for rogatory interviews:

Group 1 (persons with whom the couple dined every night during the holidays)
• David Payne, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Fiona Payne, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Diane Webster, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Russell O'Brien, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Jane Tanner, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Rachael Oldfield, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Matthew Oldfield, with address at ... and telephone no. ...

Group 2 (independent customers and employees of the Ocean Club who saw the behaviour of Kate and Gerry on the day of the disappearance):
• Dan Smith, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Steve Carpenter, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Carolyn Carpenter, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Jeremy Wilkins, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Catriona Baker, with address at ... and telephone no. ...

Group 3 (people who saw and/or spoke with Kate and Gerry at the time they noticed Madeleine's disappearance):
• Patricia Cameron, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Paul Seddon, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Michelle Thompson, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Emma Knights, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Alan Pike, with address at ... and telephone no. ...

Group 4 (people who knew the daily routine of Kate and Gerry and their relationship with their children before coming to Portugal):
• Janet Kennedy, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Amanda Coxon, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Karen McCalman, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Patricia Cameron, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Sharon Lewin, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Hayley Plummer, with address at ... and telephone no. ...

Group 5 (persons closely involved in the routine of Kate and Gerry in Portugal after the disappearance of Madeleine and their emotional state)
• Sandy Cameron, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Michael Wright, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Clarence Mitchell, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Linda McQueen, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Nicky Gill, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Justine McGuinness, with address at ... and telephone no. ...

Group 6 (Professionals who can confirm that there was no abnormality in the way Kate and Gerry treated their children):
• Dr. Phil Hussey, with address at ... and telephone no. ...
• Dr Ian Schofield, with address at ... and telephone no.

So now it looks as if some were added or were not asked for by the McCanns, amongst other PP and Walkden.
The two names in bold are allegedly the two people in whom the PJ had a special interest.

What I'm also missing is why some of the interviews are verbatim transcripts and others are just signed statements.

Camerons phoned the Foreign Office allegedly on the night of the 3rd, flew over to Portugal and picked up a car from friends before driving down to PdL.
Camerons also did most of the baby-sitting and stayed for long periods in PdL. Also something to do with the car hire?
