Free speech chief who co-wrote Leveson report set to make 'electrifying' attack on new press law

A key adviser to Lord Justice Leveson is this week poised to electrify the debate on press regulation – with a sweeping onslaught against the proposed Royal Charter agreed by the three main political parties
Shami Chakrabarti, director of the civil rights group Liberty, will say the measures it contains would give too much power to politicians – and that it poses grave threats to the freedom of speech.
Her intervention will be seen as politically explosive – and as an attack on the celebrity-led campaign group, Hacked Off, which virtually dictated the charter’s terms.
She is said to share mounting concerns that Hacked Off has become too influential and that it is effectively demanding a right of veto on any post-Leveson plan.
The impact of Ms Chakrabarti’s comments will be intensified by her dual role. She leads the country’s main civil rights pressure group – but was also was one of six ‘assessors’ who guided the Leveson Inquiry, and helped to produce its report.
She has said nothing about how the report should be implemented since it was published in November.
But in an interview with this newspaper, she said one of its proposals – for compulsory, government-imposed regulation for newspapers which refused to join a ‘voluntary’ regulator – would be unlawful under the Human Rights Act.

If she represents the Country Civil Rights then what was she doing as one of the co assessors of the Leveson because that's plain conflict of interest. Barmy!

If any member or guest on this forum has not yet signed my anti-Leveson petition on the Prime Minister's website, can I invite you all to do so ASAP, and pass on the link to others - thanks - and support the fully-justified criticisms made by Sami Chakrabarti of Liberty of the current proposals - which would amount to a significant re-introduction of state control of the press for the first time since that was ended in 1698:
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/42582
To oppose Leveson's call for new laws to control the press. We support David Cameron's warning against introducing statutory control of the press
Responsible department: Department for Culture, Media and Sport
PREAMBLE:
This petition aims to preserve a free press in this country. Already, as many editors have noted, the Leveson enquiry has had a chilling effect on press freedom.
True, the press sometimes abuse their freedom. We need a better way of curbing press excesses. We need a tougher code of practice, with a 'rapid right of reply' to incorrect or libellous articles, and arbitration.
Any new body to control the press must not be run by the press - but by independent people.
We have existing laws to protect privacy and reputation. These must be enforced, e.g. the police were at fault for not prosecuting phone hacking.
Many demands for government control of the press come from the rich, who use PR to promote themselves, but object when others come up with facts that contradict their image.
It would be wrong to introduce statutory control of the press in response to the demands of celebrities like Hugh Grant and Max Mosley.
++++++++++++++++++++++
My petition currently has 1,436 signatures. We need to overtake the number of signatures on the pro-Leveson petition

It is purely to verify, as far as possible, that the poster is genuine.Peneda Geres wrote:Why does this petition require personal details?
These personal details are NOT published by the PM's website.
I do not think the Prime Minister's staff have the resources to check the correct name and e-mail address of everyone. But it is a means, shall we say, of discouraging those who use false names and proxy sites.
Millions use the PM's website to good effect without worrying about personal data issues

As much as I'd like to sign, I think I will pass.

thought all petitions were no good if names addresses etc not able to be confirmed. Anyone could put thousands of false names on a petition surely all checked anyway one would assume to ensure valid.

Hacked Off will be in trouble then, as I know of several people who have signed very obviously spurious names and email address yet had the 'vote' accepted. I have found that when I fill in a genuine petition, the website won't accept it unless I complete all fields.
I've just checked their site and guess what? Prominent on the site is a DONATE button - Twice! On each page, just so you don't forget to errmm donate.
They are just asking for your name(any name really - how are they going to check) and an email address. Nothing more. I'm guessing from friends I've spoken to that a good percentage will turn out to be false. I know of at least four false entries, such as Mr. Dirty Clown etc. Even one false entry will put such a petition in a bad light.
Perhaps when one looks at the donations we will see nothing more than the usual suspects: a bunch of minor celebrities who have something to hide and a bunch of minor politicians with the same problems.
Just say that Hugh Grant had been able to keep his little escapade in the US under wraps - with hacked off it would never come out.
The Hacked Off site design seems to have been based on an obsolete website for the Communist Manifesto. Perhaps they bought it off the shelf.

Came across this the other day - almost makes me like the Daily Mail!
This came out in the Leveson Inquiry
Viscount Rothmere's testimony (major sharehold of Associated Newspapers)
"Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail and formerly of the Evening Standard, made a substantial donation to the McCanns in 2008 after they sued for libel. The Daily Mail agreed to carry free adverts on behalf of the Find Madeleine campaign but refused to apologise, according to Gerry McCann. The Evening Standard agreed to publish an apology."

The fight is a long way from being won by the bunch of so-called celebs.
£5.4 million final bill what a farce.
